Mortimer, to whom I owe this accomplishment. iv Abstract Why would young Latinxs want to be, talk, look, and act like narcos? This work analyzes the ways in which narcocultura has become an important source of cultural capital for many Latinxs. Narcocultura is the assemblage of music, video, television, and other forms of cultural production that feature figures of transnational narcotrafficking as central protagonists of their narratives. Based on a yearlong online ethnography, I examine the ways in which Latinx Facebook users appropriate and recontextualize narcocultura in their identity work through the lenses of LatCrit theory, critical discourse analysis, and personal lived experiences, which provided the departing point for the study and a key analytical tool. I analyze conversations I had with participants of narcocultura-oriented Facebook groups, as well as products and artifacts posted to these groups. My analysis explains the ways in which narcocultura can be engaging and empowering, while violent and problematic. The ways in which participants navigated said tensions are an important part of the study’s findings, as well as how young Latinxs use narco- centric identities to subvert class, gender, and race hegemonies. The analyst examined those organized crime syndicates that direct their criminal activities at the United States, namely Mexican narcotics trafficking and human smuggling networks, as well as a range of smaller organizations that specialize in trans-border crime. The presence in Mexico of transnational criminal organizations, such as Russian and Asian organized crime, was also examined. In order to assess the extent of terrorist activity in Mexico, several of the country’s domestic guerrilla groups, as well as foreign terrorist organizations believed to have a presence in Mexico, are described. The report extensively cites from Spanish-language print media sources that contain coverage of criminal and terrorist organizations and their activities in Mexico.

Harris California Attorney General Message from the Attorney General California is a leader for international commerce. In close proximity to Latin America and Canada, we are a state laced with large ports and a vast interstate system. California is also leading the way in economic development and job creation. And the Golden State is home to the digital and innovation economies reshaping how the world does business. But these same features that benefit California also make the state a coveted place of operation for transnational criminal organizations. As an international hub, more narcotics, weapons and humans are trafficked in and out of California than any other state. The size and strength of California’s economy make our businesses, financial institutions and communities lucrative targets for transnational criminal activity. Finally, transnational criminal organizations are relying increasingly on cybercrime as a source of funds – which means they are frequently targeting, and illicitly using, the digital tools and content developed in our state. The term “transnational organized crime” refers to a range of criminal activity perpetrated by groups whose origins often lie outside of the United States but whose operations cross international borders. Whether it is a drug cartel originating from Mexico or a cybercrime group out of Eastern Europe, the operations of transnational criminal organizations threaten the safety, health and economic wellbeing of all Americans, and particularly Californians.

It used to be men. Now, there are 4 million women in this country who have left a child behind. When people ask me if this is a true story, I tell them that it is based on 4 million true stories. These women have no other options and make the most difficult sacrifice of all because no mother would leave her child unless she was desperate. That was something I wanted to explore. Rosario has a huge dilemma having made this decision in order to provide for her child because she loves him, while at the same time feeling like she's sacrificing that love. It's not just a statistic to me. These are human beings and that's what I wanted to show. (in: Women and Hollywood 2008) Riggen’s drama explores the migration of nine year old “Carlitos” (Adrián Alonso) and his mother Rosario (Kate del Castillo) to the United States. The mother-son-relationship exempli- fies the potential tragedy of many young Mexican women who have already migrated to the US in search for a better life while leaving their children back home.     Mexican Drug Cartel Investigations Hosted by: Northeast Counterdrug Training Center Co-Sponsored by the Evansville Police Department 16 LETB Hours Mexican drug trafficking organizations are impacting communities in nearly every city in the United States. In 2011, Mexican drug cartels operated in 39 states across the country. This problem can no longer be viewed as a “border issue.” The majority of the drugs distributed and consumed in the U.S. originate in Mexico. In an effort to aggressively target drug trafficking organization, law enforcement officials need to understand how the Mexican drug war impacts local cities in the U.S. on a daily basis. The drug cartel leaders have strategically formed relationships with American gangs to flood our communities with illicit drugs. This relationship has caused great concern for law enforcement agencies in the U.S. It is imperative that law enforcement officials gain a true understanding of the “Mexican Cartel & American Street Gang Connection.” This course does not focus on statistical data or other information easily obtained through online searches regarding Mexican drug cartels. The information presented is based on the instructor’s unique experience in conducting long-term undercover operations, wire-tap intercepts, and debriefings of suspects directly linked to various Mexican drug cartels.
