RENE BURRI Rene Burri's Photography Began with an Interest in Motion Pictures. He Studied in the Field and Was A.Ssistant Camera RENE BURRI Rene Burri's photography began with an interest in motion pictures. He studied in the field and was a.ssistant cameraman for Walt Disney's Switzerland. ,Attracted by still photography, he became one of Hans Finsler' s students at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Zurich and it was through Hans Finsler he met Werner Bischof. Rene Burri1s ability so impressed Bischof that the latter recommended him to MAGNUM, the famous group of photographers founded by Robert Capa and Henri Cartier-Bresson, of, which he became an Associate Photographer in 1956, and was elected to full Magnum membership in 1959. Rene Burri 's reportage included a sensitive story on deaf and dumb children at the Institute of Musical and Rhythmic Education in Zurich, done in 1955. In 1956 he covered the Suez crisis. Magazine and industrial assignments in Italy,' Spain, Greece and Turkey followed in 1957. In 1958 he returned to the Middle East, covering Nasser at the Union of Egypt and Syria, followed by six months in Latin America: Argentina, Bolivia, Peru and Brazil. Another trip to Latin America in 1960 for the inauguration of Brasilia resulted in a comprehensive story on Brazil itself. The same year also found him in Iran covering the birth of the heir to the Shah. In 1961 he produced a notable series on the inception of the new regime in South Korea that displaced Syngman Rhee, and then went on to do a major story in Japan. In 1963 he' went to Cuba for -Look magazine, did a color essay for Paris-Match , and caught the beginning of the escalation of the war in Vietnam at the end of the year. Most of 1964 was spent in the Far East, his first visit to China, preparing for a color movie that was shot during the summer of 1965. Essays on the Argentine Gaucho, Japan at Work, An Island in the Gulf of Siam have appeared in the Swiss magazine DU. The July 1967 number of DU, devoted to Salvador da Bahia, is illustrated by Ren Burri' s photographs. Rene Burri's interest in the French architect Le Corbusier over many years has resulted in an essay on the man and his work which has had wide distri- bution. Another important work, The Germans, has been published in France and Switzerland. Although Rene Burri' s photographs have been shown in many group exhibitions, The Art Institute' s is his fir st ·one-m·an show. Rene Burri makes his home in Zurich, Switzerland. .

  • 2010 Exhibition Schedule
2010 Exhibition Schedule John Singer Sargent: Portraits in Praise of Women (May 29, 2010 - December 31, 2010) The Fenimore Art Museum presents the first major exhibition on the topic of portraits of women by the well-known American artist John Singer Sargent (1856-1925). The exhibition explores Sargentʼs range of styles and depth of characterization in his portraits of society women, as well as his fascination with exotic working-class women of Venice and Capri. The paintings and drawings provide an intimate glimpse into the lives of these women of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Included will be drawings of Madame Gautreau, the mysterious subject of Sargent's famous portrait Madame X. Empire Waists, Bustles and Lace: A Century of New York Fashion (April 1, 2010 – December 31, 2010) Empire Waists, Bustles and Lace is an exciting exhibition of the Museumʼs collection of historic dresses. When viewed in conjunction with the John Singer Sargent exhibition, the show enables visitors to see and experience a broader historical context of menʼs and womenʼs fashion. Even though upstate New York was considered the edge of the western frontier in the 19th century, residents of the area kept up with New York City and the world in terms of fashion. The exhibition includes the oldest known example of a dress with a label, stunning examples of Empire, Romantic and Civil War era dresses and turn-of-the-20th century (Sargent era) items. Additionally, visitors will be able to peek at what was worn underneath the dresses which were vital to giving them their distinctive shapes.

  • The History of Photography: the Research Library of the Mack Lee
THE HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY The Research Library of the Mack Lee Gallery 2,633 titles in circa 3,140 volumes Lee Gallery Photography Research Library Comprising over 3,100 volumes of monographs, exhibition catalogues and periodicals, the Lee Gallery Photography Research Library provides an overview of the history of photography, with a focus on the nineteenth century, in particular on the first three decades after the invention photography. Strengths of the Lee Library include American, British, and French photography and photographers. The publications on French 19th- century material (numbering well over 100), include many uncommon specialized catalogues from French regional museums and galleries, on the major photographers of the time, such as Eugène Atget, Daguerre, Gustave Le Gray, Charles Marville, Félix Nadar, Charles Nègre, and others. In addition, it is noteworthy that the library includes many small exhibition catalogues, which are often the only publication on specific photographers’ work, providing invaluable research material. The major developments and evolutions in the history of photography are covered, including numerous titles on the pioneers of photography and photographic processes such as daguerreotypes, calotypes, and the invention of negative-positive photography. The Lee Gallery Library has great depth in the Pictorialist Photography aesthetic movement, the Photo- Secession and the circle of Alfred Stieglitz, as evidenced by the numerous titles on American photography of the early 20th-century. This is supplemented by concentrations of books on the photography of the American Civil War and the exploration of the American West. Photojournalism is also well represented, from war documentary to Farm Security Administration and LIFE photography.

  • Icp Celebrates 50Th Anniversary of Fund for Concerned Photography Activities Will Highlight 50 Notable Photographers; Public Programs to Explore Documentary Work
MEDIA RELEASE ICP CELEBRATES 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF FUND FOR CONCERNED PHOTOGRAPHY ACTIVITIES WILL HIGHLIGHT 50 NOTABLE PHOTOGRAPHERS; PUBLIC PROGRAMS TO EXPLORE DOCUMENTARY WORK New York, NY (May 4, 2016) – The International Center of Photography (ICP) is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the fund its founder Cornell Capa created with a series of activities and public programs. Known as the International Fund for Concerned Photography, it was established in 1966 to honor Cornell’s brother, photojournalist Robert Capa, and his colleagues Werner Bischof, Chim (David Seymour), and Dan Weiner, who died on assignment in the 1950s. Cornell was driven to preserve his brother’s legacy and keep humanitarian documentary work in the public eye. Cornell chose the phrase “concerned photographer” to describe Robert and those photographers who demonstrated in their work an impulse to make images that educate and change the world, not just document it. By 1974, the Fund needed a home, and the International Center of Photography was born. Today, it is the world’s leading institution dedicated to photography and visual culture. “Since its founding, ICP has examined how images impact and influence social change. The concept of ‘concerned photography’ is increasingly important in today’s global image-making culture,” said Mark Lubell, ICP’s Executive Director. “The ICP community strives to honor Cornell’s vision while adapting and changing as photography evolves.” Throughout 2016, ICP will highlight 50 concerned photographers via its social media channels (#ICP50) and will produce a series of public programs exploring documentary work. The featured photographers span more than a century and include Dorothea Lange (American, 1885–1965); Roman Vishniac (American, b.

  • Werner Bischof [ 1916 — 1954 ]
WERNER BISCHOF [ 1916 — 1954 ] MAN 12.10 – 03.12.2012 Inauguration → Friday, 12th October – 7pm The Werner Bischof photo exhibition, curated by the Werner Bischof Foundation of Paris, the Magnum Photos Agency and the Agenzia Contrasto, is jointly organized by Imago Multimedia Nuoro photo agency and publishers and the MAN Museum of Nuoro. With over 100 photographs including a selection of the artist’s most famous snapshots, it also comprises 30 photos taken in Sardinia in 1950, many of which have never been published pre- viously and here make their world début. It is a unique event in Sardinia – 130 of the most famous of Bischof’s photographs including a series of unpubli- shed works. This exhibit constitutes an exhaustive retrospective and a journey to the heart of the production of one of the most important photo-reporters of the 20th century, a world-renowned and extraordinarily talented ar- tist. In fact, in 1949 Werner Bischof was the first photographer to become a member of Magnum. He possessed the faculty of combining an objective documentary-type observation of reality devoid of all manipulation of the observer’s eye with a lyrical, almost intimate, vision of the situation and subject. As he himself stated on several occasions, he felt he was more of an artist than a photo-reporter. Indeed, not many photographers have been able to condense in such a short time span of professional activity such profound and sharp observation, cogni- sant and absolutely original at the same time. Rejecting the “superficiality and sensationalism” of photo maga- zines, Bischof dedicated the greater part of his life to the study of traditional culture, an oftentimes neglected sector which allowed him to maintain a distance from editors eager for cover photos.
