Sunday August 30, 2020 Wishing All of You Who Were Born in the Month of August ﺍألﺏ مﺎيكل شﺎهﻴن Dean/Pastor a Very Happy Birthday! Father Michael G “This is none other than the House of God. Alexander, John, and Paul the New, Patriarchs of Constantinople And this is the Gate of Heaven” Genesis 28:17 Saint Alexander was sent to the First Ecumenical Council in Nicaea as the delegate of Saint Metrophanes, Bishop of Con- stantinople (see June 4), to whose throne he succeeded in the year 325. When Arius had deceitfully professed allegiance to the Council of Nicaea, Saint Alexander, knowing his guile, re- fused to receive him into communion; Arius' powerful partisans threatened that they would use force to bring Arius into the communion of the Church the following day. Saint Alexander prayed fervently that God might spare the Church; and as Arius was in a privy place relieving nature, his bowels gushed forth with an effusion of blood, and the arch-heresiarch died the death of Judas. Saint Alexander was Bishop from 325 until 337, when he was succeeded by Saint Paul the Confessor, who died a martyr's death at the hands of the Arians (see Nov. 6). The Saint John commemorated here appears to be the one who was Patriarch during the years 562-577, surnamed Scholasticus, who is also commemo- rated on February 21. He was from Antioch, where he had been a lawyer (scholasticus); he was made presbyter, then was sent to Constantinople as representative (apocrisiarius) of the Patriarch of Antioch, and was appointed Patriarch of Constantinople by the Em- peror Justinian. Saint Paul was Bishop of Constantinople during the years 687 - 693, in the reign of Emperor Justinian II, and presided over the Quinisext Council in 692. THE LORD’S PRAYER (In English and Phonetic Arabic) ur Father who art in heaven, Hallowed-be thy Name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who tres- O pass against us, And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Troparion for St. George IV As Deliverer of Captives and Defender of the Poor, Healer of the Infirm, Champion of Kings, Victorious Great Martyr George, intercede with Christ our God, for our salvation. Kontakion of the Nativity of the Theotokos IV By thy holy nativity, O pure one, Joachim and Anna were delivered from the reproach of barrenness; and Adam and Eve were delivered from the corruption of death; thy people do celebrate it, having been saved from the stain of iniquity, crying unto thee: The bar- ren doth give birth to the Theotokos, who nourisheth our life. The Epistle Sing praises to our God, sing praises. Clap your hands, all ye nations. The Reading from the First Epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians. 15:1-11 Brethren, I would remind you in what terms I preached to you the Gospel, which you received, in which you stand, by which you are saved, if you hold it fast— unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that He was buried, that He rose on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the Twelve. Then He appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. Then He appeared to James, then to all the Apostles. Last of all, as to one untimely born, He appeared also to me. For I am the least of the Apostles, unfit to be called an Apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God, which is with me. Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed. The Holy Gospel The Reading is from The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew “We offer unto thee, in behalf of all and for all” 19:16-26 t that time, a young man came up to Jesus, kneeling and saying, “Good For mercy, life, peace, health, salvation, visitation, Teacher, what good deed must I do, to have eternal life?” And He said pardon and remission of Sins… to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, The Child Rose Hajjar, The Child Marcus Thurm, The Child Cooper Towns, The Child Angelo Ledesma, The Child Lawson Joseph Lindner, Mary Joseph, God. If you would enter life, keep the commandments.” He said to Him, A Samira McKarus, George Saba, Dawn Shaheen, Veronica Elchert, Ralph Vin- “Which?” And Jesus said, “You shall not kill, you shall not commit adultery, you ciguerra, Tanya Ansara, Anita Skaff, Natalie, Malake Ansara, Alexei Karam, shall not steal, you shall not bear false witness, honor your father and mother, and George and Beverly Bardwell, Jodee Scannapieco, George & Michelle Prephan, you shall love your neighbor as yourself.” The young man said to Him, “All these I Leila Aldakar, Geneva Yarad, Marie Russell, Amy Fenton, Wafeek Khoury, Joe have observed; what do I still lack?” Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, Mancinotti, Sami Choukri Eid, Nuha Rafeedie, Nick Mancy, Ernest & Shirley go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; George, Issam Ghareeb, Carol Ghareeb, John Szczepanik, Stacey Meifert, Na- and come, follow me.” When the young man heard this, he went away sorrowful; jat Swade, Michelle Diane Ansara, Schlee, Mary Janick, Julie Assally Brown, for he had great possessions. And Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly, I say to you, it Wajeh Mouaikel, Wanda & Rose Marie Skaff, Tanya Ansara. will be hard for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the All doctors, nurses, hospital workers, first responders, care givers who put kingdom of God.” When the disciples heard this they were greatly astonished, say- themselves at risk helping those who suffer from this dreaded virus.

Andrei Vinogradov1 SOME NOTES ON THE TOPOGRAPHY OF EASTERN PONTOS EUXEINOS IN LATE ANTIQUITY AND EARLY BYZANTIUM2 This paper clarifies some issues of late antique and early Byzantine topography of Eastern Pontos Euxeinos. These questions can be divided into two large groups: the ecclesiastical topography and the locations of Byzantine fortresses. The earliest testimony of Apostolic preaching on the Eastern black sea coast—the list of the apostles by Pseudo- Epiphanius—following the ‘Chronicon’ of Hyppolitus of Rome, unsuccessfully connects South- Eastern Pontos Euxeinos to Sebastopolis the Great (modern Sukhumi), which subsequently gives rise to an itinerary of the apostle Andrew. The Early Byzantine Church in the region had a complicated arrangement: the Zekchians, Abasgians and possibly Apsilians had their own bishoprics (later archbishoprics); the Lazicans had a metropolitan in Phasis (and not in their capital Archaeopolis) with five bishop-suffragans. Byzantine fortresses, mentioned in 7th c sources, are located mostly in Apsilia and Missimiania, in the Kodori valley, which had strategic importance as a route from

  • The Devil in the Writings and Thought of Pope Gregory the Great (590-604)
The Devil in the Writings and Thought of Pope Gregory the Great (590-604) Charlotte Emily Kingston PhD University of York Department of History October 2011 2 ABSTRACT This thesis explores the portrayal of the devil in the writings and thought of Pope Gregory the Great (590-604). It examines his exegetical, hagiographical and homiletic works in addition to his correspondence. It analyses the ways in which Gregory described, understood, and used the figure of the devil, and places this within Gregory's wider conceptual framework. It proposes new ways of approaching the topic, particularly in his exegetical works, and looks as much into the associations that he drew as the doctrines that he preached. By looking at a wide selection of his works, this thesis gives an insight into how this one idea manifested itself across a variety of genres, and also how it affected his practical politics and interpretation of real-life situations. As part of this it explores the relationship between Gregory's diabology and ecclesiology, and the influence of this upon his understanding of the Roman primacy. Whilst Gregory the Great has been subject to vast amounts of scholarship, as of yet no such study has been done which takes into consideration so many of his works. This thesis therefore offers a fresh perspective and provides new ways of thinking about how Gregory used and understood the idea of the devil. 3 CONTENTS Acknowledgements 6 A Note on Translations and Biblical References 7 Author's Declaration 8 1.0 CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION 2 1.1 Gregory's Writings

Demacopoulos-00intro_Layout 1 7/31/15 8:57 AM Page 1 Introduction Pope Gregory I, known among Western Christians as St. Gregory the Great and by Eastern Christians as St. Gregory the Dialogist, was born around the year 540 to an aristocratic family well connected to the Roman Church. Gregory’s great-great-grandfather was likely Pope Felix III (bishop of Rome from 483– 492), and Pope Agapetus (bishop of Rome from 533– 536) was presumably a distant uncle. 1 Three of Greg - ory’s aunts (on his father’s side) are known to have been estate-dwelling ascetics. 2 Gregory’s father, Gordianus, held the administrative rank of de - fensor in the Church of Rome, which would typically mean that he served as a property and legal manager for a portion of the Church’s extensive landholdings. 3 Gregory’s family was wealthy, and he possessed all of the advantages of an aristocratic youth, including a palatial estate on the Caelian Hill and the best education available at that time. 4 Unfortunately, Gregory tells us little about his youth or the specifics of his studies. 5 At the time of his birth, Italy and the city of Rome were shadows of their former selves. For most of his childhood, the “Roman” armies of the East waged a destructive war against the Ostrogoths for supremacy of the Italian peninsula. Between 546 and 547 alone, control of the city of Rome switched three times between imperial and Gothic hands. 6 We 1 Demacopoulos-00intro_Layout 1 7/31/15 8:57 AM Page 2 2 – Gregory the Great know nothing about how Gregory’s family responded to the calamity of the initial siege of the capital in 546, when famine is said to have en - snared even the wealthiest of the city’s districts.

Papal diplomacy. The diplomacy of the Holy See is one of the distinctive features of the Catholic Church. It is a unique kind of diplomacy: not the instrument of a state, however small, but of the religious institution which is the Catholic Church, which is among other things a social fact. Its primary objectives belong in the spiritual, moral and humanitarian order, including respect for collective and individual human rights. Among these rights is included the right to religious liberty not only for Catholics, but also for adherents of all other religions. Thus Diplomacy is one of the ways of making the official presence of the Church in the international community a reality, which, nowadays, is essentially directed to using dialogue at an institutional level to bring to fruition the great hopes of humanity such as peace between nations, internal order and the progress of individual states. In the past, the diplomacy of the holy See had a number of different names: ‘papal’, pontifical’, ‘ecclesial’, Vatican. It may probably be regarded as the oldest in world hisory. Its importance relates first and foremost to the development of papal legations. The legates (or envoys) of the pope are in evidence from the time when the Catholic Church, following on its public recognition by the Edict of Milan (313), and has endeavoured to consolidate this primacy with regard to spiritual questions. With a view of this liberty, so recently acquired, it became necessary to work for internal unity in order to meet effectively the challenge of sectarian and separatist movements. The term ‘legate’ was used in ancient Rome to designate men entrusted with political missions of Senate or Emperor to other peoples.

1 A Short (and rough) Guide to Byzantine Names for SCA personae This is a listing of names that may be useful for constructing Byzantine persona. Having said that, please note that the term „Byzantine‟ is one that was not used in the time of the Empire. They referred to themselves as Romans. Please also note that this is compiled by a non-historian and non-linguist. When errors are detected, please let me know so that I can correct them. Additional material is always welcomed. It is a work in progress and will be added to as I have time to research more books. This is the second major revision and the number of errors picked up is legion. If you have an earlier copy throw it away now. Some names of barbarians who became citizens are included. Names from „client states‟ such as Serbia and Bosnia, as well as adversaries, can be found in my other article called Names for other Eastern Cultures. In itself it is not sufficient documentation for heraldic submission, but it will give you ideas and tell you where to start looking. The use of (?) means that either I have nothing that gives me an idea, or that I am not sure of what I have. The word "Great11 has justly been attributed to St. Gregory who stands as a dividing mark between the Ancient World and the Middle Ages, and who, undoubtedly, did more than any other one individual to direct the course of European progress and development. Gregory was one of those dominating personalities whose influence was felt not only during the age in which he lived, but also down through the great cycles of time even to the present moment. Not the Catholics alone, but all Christians living in the world today, share in the fruits of his beneficent labors, and therefore owe to Gregory a debt of gratitude which more than thirteen centuries have not effaced, but rather increased. For are not these all descendants of those nations of Europe whose ancestors belonged to the ancient tribes who owe their civilization to Gregory? Gregory has played a prominent part in secular as well as in ecclesiastical history, and the seed of his influence has brought forth a rich harvest.

  • St. Paul As a Model and Teacher in the Writings of St. Gregory the Great
THE CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF AMERICA St. Paul as a Model and Teacher in the Writings of St. Gregory the Great A DISSERTATION Submitted to the Faculty of the School of Theology and Religious Studies Of The Catholic University of America In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree Sacred Theology Doctorate By Brendan P. Lupton Washington, D.C. 2013 St. Paul as a Model and Teacher in the Writings of St. Gregory the Great Brendan P. Lupton, S.T.D. Director Susan Wessel, Ph.D. The Apostle Paul plays an important role in the writings of Gregory the Great, who reserves such distinguished titles for him as egregius praedicator, magnus regendi artifex, and peritus medicus. Gregory cites the Apostle more often than any other scriptural author in the Pastoral Rule and Paul is the second most frequent biblical source in the Moralia outside of the Gospels. Given this prominence, it is worth examining how Gregory uses the letters of Paul in his writings. The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze Gregory’s portrayal of Paul as a model Christian, as a model pastor, as a model preacher and as a teacher for clerics. This dissertation will follow the method of historical literary criticism to examine how Gregory uses Paul. The first section provides a summary of how the deeds of the saints function within Gregory’s narrative, which will help to explain Gregory’s intentions for using Paul. The second section will examine Gregory’s portrayal of Paul as a model Christian, which will include Gregory’s description of Paul as a model of virtue, detachment, and conversion.
