  • Sun and Moon (1918)
SUN AND MOON (1918) By Katherine Mansfield IN the afternoon the chairs came, a whole big cart full of little gold ones with their legs in the air. And then the flowers came. When you stared down from the balcony at the people carrying them the flower pots looked like funny awful ly nice hats nodding up the path. Moon thought they were hats. She said: "Look. There's a man wearing a palm on his head." But she never knew the difference between real things and not real ones. There was nobody to look after Sun and Moon. Nurse was hel ping Annie alter Mother's dress which was much-too -long-and-tight-under-the-arms and Mother was running all over the house and telephoning Father to be sure not to forget things. She only had time to say: "Out of my way, children!" They kept out of her way–at any rate Sun did. He did so hate being sent stumping back to the nursery. It didn't matter about Moon. If she got tangled in people's legs they only threw her up and shook her till she squeaked. But Sun was too heavy for that. He was so heavy that the fat man who came to dinner on Sundays used to say: "Now, young man, let's try to lift you." And then he'd put his thumbs under Sun's arms and groan and try and give it up at last saying: "He's a perfect little ton of bricks! Nearly all the furniture was taken out of the dining-room.

  • Þáttur 3.Odt
Cirrus Minor Good afternoon. My name is Björgvin Rúnar Leifsson and this is an episode about Pink Floyd. In 1969, Pink Floyd released two albums. The first one was released in July and the name varied a bit by publications. Mine is called “Original Motion Picture Soundtrack More "but most people simply call this album" More ". As the long name implies, this is a film soundtrack album, the first of two, that Pink Floyd released and contained only songs by themselves. The other was "Obscured by Clouds", which was released in 1972 and which we'll learn about later. Pink Floyd actually composed songs for other films. The first was "The Committee" in 1968, to say the least a bizarre film by director Peter Sykes with almost as weird compositions by Pink Floyd along with the song "Nightmare" by Arthur Brown. The music for the film was never released on an album but the film was released on a DVD about 15 years ago which I own of course. Another film with songs by Pink Floyd was Zabriskie Point in 1970, from which we will hear an excerpt in the next episode. And let's not forget "Tonight Let's All Make Love in London" in 1967, which we heard about in the first episode, and Live at Pompeii in 1972, which shows PF holding a concert for themselves in an empty amphitheater from the time of the Roman Empire in the ancient city of Pompeii in Italy. Last but not least is the 1982 Alan Parker film The Wall based on the famous album since 1979.

  • The Selby Festival and Pink Floyd Live in Selby : All in 1969
The Selby Festival and Pink Floyd live in Selby : all in 1969 A 6-month-long party marking a 900 year anniversary The Selby Festival 1969 From the perspective of the 21st century, the Selby Festival of 1969 seems to have been a magnificent attempt at municipal celebration. Whilst it ultimately failed financially, the self-confidence and belief of the organizing committee was tremendous. It is impossible to think that a town of similar size to Selby could ever plan to host a 6-month event of such diversity and quality. This article can only give a brief and fact-based account of the Festival. To have some idea of the optimism and spirit of the times, read the back copies of the weekly 'Selby Times' for 1969, available in Selby library. The festival was first discussed in the autumn of 66 with an organizing committee drawn from civic and religious organizations. It is difficult to credit now quite how important a role the church played in everyone's daily life, and the large membership of groups such as Scouts and Guides, and the way that these groups worked together with the schools and technical colleges to put events on ensured comprehensive 'community involvement' as it would be called today. The focus of the plans was to commemorate the 900th anniversary of the foundation of the original Selby Abbey by Benedict. It's also important to remember the status that Selby had in Yorkshire at the time. With an Abbey older than any other in Yorkshire and a vibrant local economy based on Cochrane's shipyard; British Oil and Cake Mills (BOCM); the sugar factory; John and E Sturge; and Rostron's paper as well as many other local industries, a station based on the East Coast Main Line and the infamous Toll Bridge : Selby was a prosperous and highly-regarded town.
