This paper is a detailed case study of the southerly buster of 6–7 October 2015, along the New South Wales coast. It takes advantage of recently available Himawari-8 high temporal- and spatial-resolution satellite data, and other observational data. The data analyses support the widespread view that the southerly buster is a density current, coastally trapped by the Great Dividing Range. In addition, it appeared that solitary waves developed in this event because the prefrontal boundary layer was shallow and stable. A simplified density current model produced speeds matching well with observational southerly buster data, at both Nowra and Sydney airports. Extending the density current theory, to include inertia-gravity effects, suggested that the solitary waves travel at a speed of ,20% faster than the density current. This speed difference was consistent with the high-resolution satellite data, which shows the solitary waves moving increasingly ahead of the leading edge of the density current. With skilled resources in Adelaide, Sydney and Perth, he is responsible for the sustainment and growth of Raytheon Australia’s surface ships capability, including Combat System integration, enterprise services, sustainment and training services. Andrew has over 33 years experience as a professional engineer, including 23 years experience in senior leadership positions. He has an extensive background in project management, systems engineering, and in the, specification, development, and implementation of electronics and software based systems. He joined Raytheon Australia in 2005 as Engineering Director in the Naval Systems Business Unit and has served as a member of AWD Alliance Management Team since 2007. He held the Navy delegation as the senior engineer on the AWD Program between 2007 and 2017. Andrew started his professional career in 1987 with Cossor Electronics (a Raytheon company) as an electronics design engineer. In 1991 he migrated from the UK to Australia joining Stanilite and then ADI Limited (now Thales). He was responsible for the design and development of communications switching systems that were integrated into the ANZAC frigates, Military Air Traffic Control systems and Cellular telephony systems exported to PNG and China. He was also the technical lead for the JTFHQ integration into HMAS Manoora and a number of other successful projects and bids. -

Making it in the Melbourne Music Scene Post-Punk and Post-Post-Punk Dr Sarah Taylor School of Science RMIT University Victoria, Australia [email protected] This paper uses contemporary documentation, interviews and maps to highlight the different types of music careers, and modes of “making it”, seen in the 1986 feature film Dogs in Space. The film concerns a fictional band of the same name, based on The Ears, a minor group active in the Melbourne band scene between 1979-1981. INXS’s Michael Hutchence plays Sam, the singer in post punk group Dogs in Space. The contrast between Hutchence and Sejavka was seen as remarkable: a major-league rock star, having “made it” by the time of the film’s production, portraying a relatively obscure post-punk musician. However, the trajectories of these bands did overlap in time and place. An historical geographical analysis of INXS and The Ears can help to add context to the Melbourne music scene depicted in the film, as well as to the later cult status popularity of the film, made during a transitional time between norms in the Australian music industry. The Nautilus Institute for Security and Sustainability The corporatisation of Pine Gap Desmond Ball, Bill Robinson, Richard Tanter, and Philip Dorling Nautilus Institute for Security and Sustainability Special Report 25 June 2015 Summary The Joint Defence Facility Pine Gap, located just outside the town of Alice Springs in Central Australia and managed by the U.S. National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), is one of the largest U.S. technical intelligence collection facilities in the world. The corporate presence at Pine Gap has expanded substantially in terms of both the number of companies involved and the total number of civilian contract personnel, and has changed significantly in functional terms, since the 1990s. It includes some of the major US aerospace and defence companies, such as Raytheon, Boeing, Northrop Grumman and General Dynamics, as well as major computer companies, such as IBM and Hewlett-Packard. It also includes an increasing number of ‘pure play’ companies, who focus almost entirely on contracts from the National Reconnaissance Office, Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and National Security Agency (NSA), such as Scitor Corporation, SAIC and Leidos. In addition to the supply of equipment (such as satellite dishes/radomes and computers) and the provision of specialised technical services (such as satellite control and antenna alignment), these companies are now also engaged in a wide variety of management, operations and maintenance roles. While the base is nominally a ‘joint’ United States-Australian facility, virtually all of the major companies involved are U.S. corporations or their Australian branches – further emphasizing the already heavily asymmetrical character of the ‘jointness’ of Pine Gap. -

SUBMISSION TO THE INQUIRY INTO NAVAL SHIPBUILDING BY THE SENATE FOREIGN AFFAIRS, DEFENCE AND TRADE REFERENCES COMMITTEE On 10 November 2005 the Senate referred the following matter to the Senate Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade References committee for inquiry and report by the last sitting day of 2006: That the Committee inquire into and report upon the scope and opportunity for naval shipbuilding in Australia and in particular: (a) The capacity of the Australian industrial base to construct large Naval vessels over the long term and on a sustainable basis; (b) The comparative economic productivity of the Australian shipbuilding industrial base and associated activity with other shipbuilding nations; (c) The comparative economic costs of maintaining, repairing and refitting large naval vessels throughout their useful lives when constructed in Australia vice overseas; (d) The broader economic development and associated benefits accrued from undertaking the construction of large naval vessels. Introduction When the issue of naval shipbuilding is raised thoughts usually turn to the fabrication of large steel hulls, and possibly the machinery that propels them through the water. This is natural as the hull and superstructure are the obvious physical manifestations of a naval shipbuilding program. However, in terms of value, operational capability, complexity and risk it is the systems onboard the ship, and how they are integrated, that are the key factors in the success, or otherwise, of such a program. This is reflected in the relative value of the fabrication and consolidation tasks, which vary between 10% - 20% of the cost of a vessel. The majority of the cost of a modern naval ship is in the systems, including weapons and sensors, used to operate it. -

Project: Perth College Perth College’s student body required Australian made and designed steel lockers with custom indigenous inspired perforated door fronts to reflect the schools unique culture and identity. Perth College Located at 31 Lawley Cres, Mount Lawley, Perth College is a leading private Anglican school educating girls from Kindergarten to Year 12. Catering for day students and boarding from Year 7 to Year 12, the school required a locker solution suitable capable of supporting flexible needs. Currently home to approximately 1,000 students, Perth College is one of the oldest independent girls’ schools in Western Australia. The purpose-built facility provides spaces for encouraging creativity, imagination, social interaction and the development young minds. The Brief Perth College’s creative team specified Australian made and designed steel lockers to reflect the schools unique culture and identity. Planex was engaged to supply a customised locker system in a range of blue coloured powder coats featuring a custom Indigenous inspired perforated punch pattern designed by Parry and Rosenthal Architects. Steel lockers were specified for the senior school, located in foyers leading to multiple classrooms across two levels. Featuring flexible spaces that mirror universities and modern workplaces, the college utilises retractable walls to allow for collaborative learning and large groups to come together for speakers, meetings, exams and workshops. Rasuly February 1996 i ABSTRACT Thunderstorm rainfall is considered as a very vital climatic factor because of its significant effects and often disastrous consequences upon people and the natural environment in the Greater Sydney Region. Thus, this study investigates the following aspects of thunderstorm rainfall climatology of the region between 1960 to 1993. In detail, it was found that thunderstorm rainfalls in Sydney have marked diurnal and seasonal variations. They are most frequent in the spring and summer and during the late afternoon and early evening. Thunderstorms occur primarily over the coastal areas and mountains, and less frequently over the lowland interior of the Sydney basin.
