Congressman visits local company

Congressman Jason Smith, representing Missouri’s 8th Congressional District, visited last week with the employees and owners of Wilson Industries, formerly Bryant Plastics, and toured the PVC piping operation north of Gainesville. The family-owned operation is operated by Sherri and Roger Wilson, who moved here last year from Lincoln, Nebraska, after acquiring the facility in September. Sherri is owner and CEO of Wilson Industries, and Roger is president. The couple showed Smith and Ozark County Presiding Commissioner John Turner around the manufacturing facility and demonstrated how they make their products. Currently, Wilson Industries employs 38 people. The Wilsons expect all five of their adult children will move to the area and become involved in operating the business. They have established an internship program for local school students to gain hands-on experience within the company. Ozark County Prosecuting Attorney John Garrabrant and Assistant Attorney General Steven Kretzer appeared on behalf of the state. Ruud, who is currently being held in the Greene County Jail, appeared with public defender Kate Welborn. The defense filed a motion for continuance of Ruud’s jury trial, which was Ruud previoiusly scheduled for Sept. 9, 2019. Garrabrant objected to the continua- tion of the trial. The judge sustained the motion, and Ruud’s jury trial was pushed to Jan. 27, 2020. A conference call was also set up between the judge, prosecution and defense for June 12. This is the third time Ruud’s jury trial date has been reset. Her original trial was sched- uled for Aug. 27, 2018. During a pre-trial conference on May 18, 2018, Holden reset the jury trial for Jan. 28, 2019. During another pre-trial conference on Nov. 29, 2018, the defense’s motion for continuance was granted without objection, and Ruud’s jury trial was bumped to Sept. 9, 2019. Then, during last week’s hearing, Holden sustained another motion for continuation, allowing the case to be set for the new jury trial date, Jan. 27, 2020. A passage in the Old Testament speaks of holding children accountable for the things their fathers did. The phrasing is a bit odd, as Bible stories some- times are, but the verse says, “The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge.” The point of the pas- sage is that no longer would accountability for transgressions pass from one generation to the next. Each man would be judged on his own actions. I was reminded of these words recently as the Missouri Legislature completed its work on the 2020 state budget. Not because of how well he delivered his speech, he says, but because the night included the graduation of one of “Ozark County’s finest,” Ozark County Sheriff’s Department jailer - and now deputy - Jeff Lane. “Every once in awhile, somebody comes along that you just know in your heart is that special someone. Someone that you know will take the interest of their citizens to heart. Someone that will stay in contact with the citizens they serve. That someone is Jeff Lane,” Reed posted on Facebook after the ceremony. While giving his speech to the class of eager sheriffs’ academy graduates, Reed said “God put it on my heart” to do something he’d never done before. The dinvine prompting caused Reed to pause and dedicate his part of the ceremony to Lane’s brother, Joshua, who died in a vehicle accident Oct. 26, 2012. “[Josh was] a young man that I knew, that was taken too soon, but he will forever live in our hearts,” Reed said in his Facebook post. He spent two years in Afghanistan as a rifleman and then as a designated marksmen, returning to the States in 2012. “I went to a leadership course for the military shortly after my brother passed away. Then I came home and was put in a team leader position and continued going to drill until I got my orders to deploy again in 2017.” Ozark County Sheriff Darrin Reed, far right, gave keynote In the early months of 2017, Reed contacted Lane to ask if he would be interested in working at the sheriff’s speech May 23 at the Missouri Sheriffs’ Association department as a jailer.
