One of my favorite things to do when I was growing up was putting rings in the hogs’ noses so they couldn’t root under- neath the fences and get out. Father built a “catcher” so he could hold them while I put in the rings. He would give me the pliers and rings then catch the hog by the snout and hang on. With the hog squealing and carrying on, sometimes it took awhile for me to get the job done. It took several rings for each one, but I stayed right in there until it was done. What a racket they would make! Nowadays, a lot of people think they need earplugs or some kind of protection over their ears to use a lawn mower or shoot a gun. We didn’t even know what those things were. If younger people would just turn down their loud radios or boom boxes and enjoy the sound of a good squealing pig … life would be simpler.
