Lourdes Rodríguez Schettino TUTOR: Dr. Alberto Coy Otero Tesis en opción al grado científico de Doctor en Ciencias Biológicas La Habana 1999 A mis padres, esposo e hijos SÍNTESIS En el género Anolis Daudin, 1802, se incluyen más de 250 especies, distribuidas desde Norte hasta Sur América, incluyendo las Antillas Mayores y Menores, las Islas Bahamas y algunas islas del Pacífico. En Cuba viven 51 especies (94.1 % endémicas), número que es el mayor registrado para un país. Para conservarlas adecuadamente, los objetivos trazados fueron: preparar una clave para su identificación y verificar la presencia de grupos de especies morfológicamente afines; actualizar la distribución geográfica y altitudinal; caracterizar los tipos de substratos que utilizan y comprobar si existe distribución vertical sobre ellos. Para alcanzarlos, se revisó la literatura al respecto, se tomaron diferentes medidas a los ejemplares depositados en colecciones, se revisaron los ficheros de las colecciones, se visitaron numerosas localidades a través de todo el país, donde se realizaron censos de las especies y observaciones sobre el tipo de substrato y la altura sobre el suelo a que se encontraban. With these considerations in mind, we may ask what traits, if any, are candidates to have promoted adaptive radiation and species diversification in anoles? To address this question, the first place to look is at traits that arose at the base of the anole radiation.402 Two obvious candidates are traits that characterize anoles, the toepad and the dewlap. I’ll consider each in turn. EXPANDED SUBDIGITAL TOEPADS AS KEY INNOVATIONS Anoles use a greater range of microhabitats, from leaf litter and grass stems to rainfor- est canopy and boulder-strewn streams, than other comparable clades of iguanid lizards. One feature that distinguishes anoles from other iguanids is the extent of their arboreal- ity. Most iguanids are either terrestrial or, to the extent that they get off the ground, they use broad surfaces such as boulders, tree trunks, and large branches (Vitt and Pianka, 2003). In this respect, the evolution of subdigital toepads may represent a key innovation that allowed anoles to interact with their environment in a new way. By allowing these lizards to use a variety of arboreal surfaces such as narrow twigs, leaves, and grass blades that lizards lacking pads have difficulty accessing, the evolution of toepads may have facil- itated the radiation of anoles into a variety of ecological niches otherwise little explored by iguanids. How might this hypothesis be tested? Certainly, toepads provide functional capabili- ties not available to padless lizards, in particular the ability to adhere to smooth surfaces (Chapter 13). -

SMITHSONIAN HERPETOLOGICAL INFORMATION SERVICE The first number of the SMITHSONIAN HERPETOLOGICAL INFORMATION SERVICE series appeared in 1968. SHIS number 1 was a list of herpetological publications arising from within or through the Smithsonian Institution and its collections entity, the United States National Museum (USNM). The latter exists now as little more than the occasional title for the registration activities of the National Museum of Natural History. No. 1 was prepared and printed by J. A. Peters, then Curator-in-Charge of the Division of Amphibians & Reptiles. The availability of a NASA translation service and assorted indices encouraged him to continue the series and distribute these items on an irregular schedule. The series continues under that tradition. Specifically, the SHIS series distributes translations, bibliographies, indices, and similar items judged useful to individuals interested in the biology of amphibians and reptiles, and unlikely to be published in the normal technical journals. We wish to encourage individuals to share their bibliographies, translations, etc. with other herpetologists through the SHIS series. INTRODUCTION The terrestrial reptile fauna of Cuba consists of 106 species described to date, of which 55 (51.8%) belong to the family Iguanidae. The family Iguanidae contains a total of 125 taxa, including subspecies. Frost and Etheridge (1989, Misc. Publ. Mus. Nat. Hist., Univ. Kansas 81:1-65) recommended that the eight generic groups of the family Iguanidae be recognized as distinct families. However, for the present review, I prefer to consider the Cuban species as one group in order to keep the information together. In Cuba, the iguanids occur in many different terrestrial habitats from the coastal zones to the highest elevations in mountains, in natural, agricultural, and urban areas. -

UNDP Project document Government of Cuba United Nations Development Program PIMS no.: 4716 Project Title: A landscape approach to the conservation of threatened mountain ecosystems. Brief Description This project will make a paradigm shift in biodiversity conservation and protected area management in Cuba, from a site based approach to a landscape approach that integrates PAs into the surrounding areas. This is necessary in order to protect core refugia for biodiversity, while addressing fragmentation from production practices in the landscape as a whole, and countering threats such as fire and pollution which have their origins in the practices employed in the production landscape. Hence, the strategic landscape approach supported through this project will constitute an innovative approach and contribute to strengthen the management effectiveness of the PA system. The project will focus on threatened mountain ecosystems located in the principal mountain ranges of the country, which are legally considered as Special Sustainable Development Regions (REDS) and managed by Mountain Organisms. It will work across altitudinal gradients reaching from mountain ridges to foothills in order to maintain functional connectivity.
