Loudspeaker Dedicated 1982 To Mr. Douglas King

The Senior Class of 1982 hereby dedicates this year’s Loudspeaker to Mr Douglas King. Mr. King, after thirty years of service in the school district, has retired as the Principal of Carteret High School. This is our token of appreciation to him, and our acknowledgment of how much he has meant to us. Mr. King himself was a graduate of Carteret High School and later came back to teach here. For ten years he instructed general science, economic geography, and driver education. He then went on to serve as guidance counselor for two years before being appointed Vice-Principal of the high school In 1965, two years after his appointment as Vice-Principal, Mr. Douglas King was appointed Principal of Carteret High School. He served in this position until his retirement this year. Not only was Mr. King seen in the classroom, the guidance office, or the main office, he was frequently seen on the football field, the baseball diamond, and the basketball court. He was the Head Coach of Carteret’s football and baseball teams for twelve years, as well as the Junior Varsity Coach for Carteret’s basketball team. Mr King has seen many classes pass through the doors of Carteret High School He has played a part in so many lives in our community. So, in truth, these thanks come, not only from the Class of 1982, but from the many students whose lives he has touched. He is truly a man who has made a difference, and one we will never forget.

As we, the class of 1982, leave Carteret High School, we look back on the good times we’ve shared with the many new friends we made. Although the days would seem neverending at times, we now realize that the four years we spent in high school passed us by all too quickly. We began high school in September 1978 as nervous freshman trying to find our next class. We got our first taste of student government when, under the guidance of Mrs. Kathy Dalavalle and Mr. Andrew Chamra, we elected Sal Brucato as president, Robin Slivka as vice president, Geri Mendez as secretary, and LeighAnn Szymnaski as treasurer. Our new class officers were faced with the task of fund raising for our treasury. To do this we sponsored a St. Valentine’s Day dance, sold popcorn at the HRC Spring Fair and had numerous cake sales. President: Our sophomore year approached quickly and once again we elected new class Lynn Portugal officers. Sal Brucato remained our president, but this year Janet Mannino was elected vice president, Geril Vargo was secretary, and our new treasurer was Denise Zajac. Again, the problem of raising money faced us. This year, Mrs. Dalavalle and Mr. Chamra helped us to organize cake sales and our Sophomore- /Junior class St. Valentine’s Day dance at which we raised a total of $16.00. The end of sophomore year brought about the end of Mrs. Dalavalle’s career at C.H.S. Moving on to new career goals, she left us with the task of selecting a new female advisor. The selection was not too difficult to make because Mrs. Simon was so popular among the students of our class. Along with our new advisor, we elected Joe Vernachio as our new president and Patti Lynch as our new vice president. Geril and Denise remained our secretary and treasurer respectively. From the start of our Junior year, we began planning for the Junior prom. We chose to have our prom at the Dorian Manor with Alive ’N Kickin’ playing the prom song “ Comes a Vice-President: Patricia Lynch Time” by Neil Young. To decrease the cost of the prom, we raised money by sponsoring a St. Patrick’s Day Dance, a towel sale, and once again, a cake sale. Along with the Senior class and Mr. Spaldo, the play “ Get Smart” ran successfully. Finally, a year that we never thought would come had approached us. We were finally SENIORS!!! We began our last year at Carteret High with the same officers as we had Junior year with the exception of Lynn Portugal as president. Although our advisors remained the same, we learned that our principal was not the same. Due to Mr. King’s retirement, Mr. Gilrain stepped in as our new principal. Early in the year, we also received news that our ex-advisor, Mrs. Dalavalle, had a baby boy. From the start of the year, we began planning for the future events. We planned to visit Disneyworld and Wet & Wild on March 23-27 and began organizing our Senior Dinner Dance. To decrease the cost of the Senior trip and the dinner dance, we sold Nestle’s candy bars, chocolate Santa Clauses, and boosters. We leave Carteret High more mature and ready to accept the future with fond Treasurer: memories and fine friends. Denise Zajac

Advisors: Mr Chamra Mrs. Simon

Secretary: Geril Vargo

52 ENGLISH

“ There is no frigate like a book/To take me lands away . . Subscribing to this sentiment of Emily Dickinson, the English department offers every student of literature an opportunity for numerous vicarious experiences. Students can sail the waters with Ahab chasing his white whale or agonize with Santiago as he labors to land his marlin. They can walk the streets of St. Peters burg with Raskolnikov or plummet into despair with Hamlet. Literature provides the opportunity to respond to ideas univer sally projected for centuries. Students can write of their reactions (in Expository Writing or Media: Analysis and Synthesis) or inter pret literature orally (in Dramatic Poetry) or write their own (in Creative Writing). Through the reading of science fiction, stu dents uncover predictions for the future and in Humanities, they learn how man responds to concepts and other men. Literature and the mass media afford all students the vehicles for extensive training in the four communication skills: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Communication Workshop, Oral and Written Communication, Research Techniques, Mass Media, Public Speaking, Play Production, and Composition encourage students to express their ideas creatively and to investigate the ideas of other people. Through such research students become acquainted with the library facilities and career opportunities. To instill or enhance salable skills, the department offers four semesters of Business English in which stress is placed on me chanics and composition of business correspondence. In co-op eration with the Career Resource Center, Business English classes host speakers from business schools. Students who wish to enter college can secure a strong compo sition and literature background by selecting wisely from among the twenty courses open to college preparatory students. Stu dents who are highly motivated or humanities oriented can enroll in an English Honors Program for their junior and senior years. One of two team-taught courses. Honors English develops analyt ical skills and encourages greater independence than do other courses. Wherever feasible, the department individualizes. Reading and English as a Second Language classes provide individual learning packets; Fundamentals of Writing affords teacher-student confer ences. In four years of English study, students should encounter myriad techniques of instruction: large and small group discus sion, teacher lecture, work sheets, audio-visual presentations, stu dent reports, team teaching, and drill. They should have ample opportunity to read, to write, to speak, to listen, and to think. These are the acts which will prepare them for their lives after Carteret High School.

53 SOCIAL STUDIES

Education in the social studies acquaints students with the historical development of their nation, and an understanding of America’s democratic system and unique lifestyle. The many social, economic, and political problems facing America are care fully investigated. Students are also introduced to the historical and cultural development of other lands and peoples. Throughout the social studies program at Carteret High, teach ers stress the development of desirable social attitudes and skills necessary for social competence. Emphasized throughout are recognition of the worth of the individual; respect for each other’s opinions; cooperation with others; the ability to gather, organize, and present data effectively in written and oral form; and the formulation, analysis, and solution of societal problems.

54 BUSINESS

The Business Department and its various courses are designed to prepare each business student for many business careers. The program extends over four years and the faculty attempts to se the available courses as a strong foundation for the students. Among the courses are bookkeeping, business math, machine shorthand, steno, and typing. Business students may also partici pate in accompanying programs such as Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA). In addition to the standard business program, these organizations are designed to aid the business student in prepara tion for life in the business world. In general, the Business Depart ment is well rounded and beneficial to anyone interested in a business career. SCIENCE DEPARTMENT

We in the Science Department are involved in making the learning of science an interesting and useful experience. We know that a useful understanding of science is necessary in order to live successfully in a world that is built around science and technology. To accomplish this, our courses are designed to prepare stu dents for all walks of life. This includes information necessary to pursue any field in science, and any field related to science such as Marine Science, Medicine, Space Science, Environmental Sci ence, Engineering, and the Industrial Technologies. Those who are not pursuing science-oriented careers receive a basic foundation in the sciences. This prepares them to be intelli gent citizens who are aware of the effects of science and technol ogy on their lives, and who are capable of influencing their environment.

56 FOREIGN LANGUAGE

French, German, and Spanish courses are available to the student body from Freshman year to Senior year. In addition to the mastery of language skills, students have excellent exposure to foreign culture. Language study opens new horizons. The advanced levels of study enable a deeper concentration on the technical aspects and a greater appreciation of the cultures. The department’s aim is to offer an understanding and appreciation of another people’s way of life, literature, and civilization through language.

57 MATHEMATICS

The classes offerred by the Math Department are Algebra I and II, geometry, trigonometry, senior math, basic computer course, and gen eral math I and II. General students business students, and college prep students all take at least the two math classes required by law, but in many cases are scheduled for more. A strong background in mathemat ics is helpful in any field.

58 INDUSTRIAL ARTS

Industrial Arts courses in Carteret High School are rewarding classes in which the students are able to express their own creativity in various ways. Courses included Metal Shop, Auto Shop, and Wood Shop. Each student’s performance varies according to his or her ability. One must not only have the skill to use the tools properly but also be able to interpret the instructions and apply the necessary techniques for a successful project. The faculty conducting these classes are aware of the students’ different needs, and employ their knowledge to benefit the stu dents. Future ideas include allowing the students to take two to four periods per day of Industrial Arts courses which will better pre pare them for future jobs. The students gain self-satisfaction, determination, and knowledge to insure a foundation for a suc cessful career. PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Fitness is the prime objective of the Carteret High School physical education classes. The high school physical education teaching staff is attempting to increase and/or maintain a high fitness level among the students in an attempt to make students more aware of their fitness level, a 12 minute fitness run is administered at the beginning of the school year, and the results compared with a second run at the end of the year. The students cardio-vascular system is trained and prepared so that the individual may be able to run (jog) the entire 12 minutes. The students are taught the proper methods of stretching and warm-up exercises before they begin any activity. Then the fun begins — team and individual sports are played; natural ly underclassmen are instructed in the basic skills of the activity as well as catching, throwing, kicking, batting, passing, blocking, punting, and running on dribbling with the various objects used. The offensive and defensive techniques of each sport are demonstrated and practiced before competition begins. Sportsmanship, competition and team play are the most enjoyable portion of the high school physical education cirriculum, as well as the friendship and healthful atmosphere which transpire.

60 FINE ARTS

Plano I & II Everybody would like to play the piano! What better way to enjoy your favorite melodies than with a piano class. This course is ap proached through the adult method of chords and theory. Simple classics deasonal songs, and even pop tunes are mastered. Finger technique is developed through scales and exercises. The courses should be taken by any student planning to be an elementary teacher and of course for anyone who enjoys music! Piano II is a continuation of Piano I More pieces are selected to expand each students repetoire including duet playing and solo work.

Art I & II In Art 1 a variety of projects are done. We try to work with a variety of media such as wire, celluclay, tissue paper, etc. The first year is used for exploratory purposes. In Art II, more basics are introduced such as lettering perspective, mark making and other large projects.

The 1981 football season for Carteret High School was clearly a story of courage. Many of the players were out-manned and outsized yet the Ramblers overcame these obstacles. The team was led this season by five captains - Ron Strangio, Gary McCormick, Tom Stroka, and Harry Wolansky. The hardhitting Ramblers took on each opponent with courage and endurance to play each game to the best of their ability. It was a frustrating season for the Ramblers - injuries playing a major role in keeping the team from having any consistancy from game to game. This team, however, responded well to the challenges before them. The captains and seniors set the example for the rest of the squad in their dedication and hard work in approaching each game.

Under the direction of head coach Bob Cowan, this year’s soccer program must be considered a rebuilding year because of the youth and inexperience of the squad. On a varsity roster of 15 players, only five are seniors; Dan Maldonado, Joe Vernachio, Luis Perez, Pedro Gallego and Vinnie Valenti. The juniors on the team include Tony Novella, Kevin Brand, John McNamara and Mike Kaschak. The squad is completed with a strong group of sophomores led by Paul Perriera, Chris Lettini, Mark Pogoda, Mancos Leyton, Ken Whiltom and Louis Antoine. With all of the underclassmen receiving extensive training this year, the future for the Rambler s soccer team looks bright.

Though competition was fairly tough this season, the C.H.S. tennis team, coached by Mrs. Agnes Mosca, completed a relatively successful season. The seniors include Caroline DuPont (first singles), Terry Knittel (first doubles), Gerri Mendez (first doubles), Mary Petroski (second or third singles), and Judi Singer (second or third singles). The juniors consist of Isabel Cruz (second doubles), Robyn Foy (second or third singles), Lori Gattusso (second doubles), Kim Martin (second doubles), and Sally Sanchez (second doubles). These girls comprise the experienced upperclassmen or the team. However, a note must be added about the team’s smashing sophomore duo. Beth Munro and Barbara Ziccardi (second doubles) carried an undefeated record far into the season. In addition, Diane Dykarski and Gina Mastroviti are two J.V. players on their way up. All of the girls were rather pleased with their season, and sharing their pride were managers Karen Cece and Diane Mesavitz.

The 1981 Cross Country season was rewarding for both the boys and the girls. Both teams have a 13 meet schedule at various courses throughout Middlesex and Union counties each with a distance of 3.1 miles or more. The Boys’ Cross Country Team, under the direction of coach Art Shadell, is comprised of seven hard working and for the most part, inexperienced men. They worked hard to try to make up for their lack of background by running up to eight miles a day and 40 miles a week. Every meet the team entered they were the underdogs but never gave up and ran harder to improve their times. The team consists of senior Dave Osborne, juniors Greg Moraco, Ed Nelan and Don Ryan sophomore Vincent Vaca and freshmen Paul Rojek and Gary Zesmanovich. This year’s girls’ team, directed by coach Bob Donnelly, is a young and potentially strong squad. With only one senior, Maria Morquillas, the juniors dominate the team in number with Debbie Daly, Evelyn Donnelly, Stacy Pollock, Joann Selvaggi, and Cheryl Wiegmann. One sophomore, Diane Deladovitch and freshmen Patty Butynes, Joanne Gurevitch and Kris Washington complete the team’s roster. Managers Beth Yustak and Denise Zajac, who also participate in practice with the runners, supported the team and were a great help. The girls finished their season with a record of 6-2 and a 4th place finish in the Middlesex County Championship meet. Both teams are looking ahead to next year and hopefully a greater increase in student interest and a larger turn out for one of the tougher sports.

Carteret’s 1981-1982 Ramblers are mostly an inexperienced group. The only player with any significant varsity experience is Junior guard Mike Hronich. Scoring should come from a big front line of Jr. Roy Goderstad, Jr. John Stanley, and Senior Co-Captain Charles Gosha Although Gosha is a Senior, his experience is limited because of ineligibility last season. The guard position is in the hands of Jr. Vin Medvetz, Jr. Mike Hronich, and Senior Co-Captain Lou Perez. People who contribute off the bench include Bert Stanley and Bud Seniuk at forwards and Jim Mets, Kevin Roche, Lou Mendoza and Bob Davis at guards. The season’s outlook is optimistic if the young Ramblers can get by the early part of schedule. Carteret participated in the Tri-County classic over Christmas break and won a second place trophy. John Stanley was named to the All-tournament team after scoring 30 pts. and grabbing 18 rebounds in the 2 games.

Winter Track is a sport for the hardy, a sport for those who can withstand any weather condition. A Winter Track athlete runs, jumps, and throws in cold, rain, snow, or any combination of weather conditions that come our way. With the various changes in conferences, the Winter Track team must also endure a lack of meets in which to evaluate themselves. With all these drawbacks, the coaches still expect our boys and girls to work hard in practice and have good performances in the meets that are scheduled. We aim our workouts toward the state and county championship meets and work to prepare for the full spring track schedule. The Winter Track team is a close knit group of men and women striving for the common goal of improvement and good performance.

The Carteret High School Baseball Team again start ed out with a young and inexperienced club. Neverthe less, there is high expectations that the team can im prove upon last year’s record of 6-14. This year’s team is happy to be competing in league play once again, after being an independent team last year. They are now members of the Watchung Conference. The 1982 club is led by senior Captain Luis Perez, who plays short stop. Ron Strangio, one of the better catchers in the county, Matt Frolich, who is the lead-off batter and the left fielder, and senior pitchers Tom Stroka and Steve Stampoulos. Steve had three of Car teret’s six wins last year. The other three went to Mike Hronich, a junior who has duty at third base when he is not on the mound. There are fifteen other juniors whom we hope can fill the spots needed to complete the team and gain enough experience so that Carteret can have a winning season. Carteret has had a fine start this season, winning five Coach Nelson with Captain Louie Perez of their first seven games. The coaching staff hopes that the team can maintain this pace and gain entry into county and state tournaments. We hope that the 1982 Baseball Team is successful in achieving its goal, and maintaining the proud name which has always been associated with Carteret baseball. !MH m*

The Boys Spring Track team for the 1982 season is a much improved unit from the previous year. The team is well represented by all grade levels which will help maintain the program in the next few years. The seasons outlook is bright with a good possibility for a .500 record. Our Seniors lead the team in practice and meets and should do well in the County and State meets at the end of the season. The underclassmen lend depth and ability to the team, which we were lacking the last few years, and help the team to a winning season. The Girls Spring Track team is a highly experienced team comprised of mostly Seniors and Juniors. The team had a winning record last year and should maintain the same level of competition this season. The season’s outlook is exceptionally good with a mix of State Champions and School Record Holders leading the way into our Dual Meet and championship seasons. A small group of newcomers are making their presence felt and should make for a really fun season with plenty of victories.

Maria Morquillas, Dave Osborne, Louie Perez, Mary Kepich, Denise Zajac. and Bob Harris

“ Ramblers for All Seasons” is a special feature designed to honor a special class of athlete. Lettering on the Varsity level comes through hard work and, often, with little recognition. It represents a measure of success that only a small percentage can claim. Moreover, to letter in three sports in three seasons requires over-all versatility, along with the giving of one’s time from September 1 until May 30. A special congratulations goes to these 1982 Ramblers for all seasons. tmi> SCHOLAR ATHLETES

“ Scholar Athletes” are students who find success in the classroom, as well as on the playing field. They compete both academically and physically. These stu dents are able to keep up with their school work and participate in a sport at the same time. In order to be chosen as a “ Scholar Athlete,” each student must earn a varsi ty letter during the school year and be in the top ten percent of the class. To the 1982 “ Scholar Athletes,” congratula tions for all your hard work.
