nineteen Loudspeaker Dedicated 1982 To Mr. Douglas King The Senior Class of 1982 hereby dedicates this year’s Loudspeaker to Mr Douglas King. Mr. King, after thirty years of service in the school district, has retired as the Principal of Carteret High School. This is our token of appreciation to him, and our acknowledgment of how much he has meant to us. Mr. King himself was a graduate of Carteret High School and later came back to teach here. For ten years he instructed general science, economic geography, and driver education. He then went on to serve as guidance counselor for two years before being appointed Vice-Principal of the high school In 1965, two years after his appointment as Vice-Principal, Mr. Douglas King was appointed Principal of Carteret High School. He served in this position until his retirement this year. Not only was Mr. King seen in the classroom, the guidance office, or the main office, he was frequently seen on the football field, the baseball diamond, and the basketball court. He was the Head Coach of Carteret’s football and baseball teams for twelve years, as well as the Junior Varsity Coach for Carteret’s basketball team. Mr King has seen many classes pass through the doors of Carteret High School He has played a part in so many lives in our community. So, in truth, these thanks come, not only from the Class of 1982, but from the many students whose lives he has touched. He is truly a man who has made a difference, and one we will never forget. 3 LOUD SPEAKER EDITORS MR. Although the days would seem neverending at times, we now realize that the four years we spent in high school passed us by all too quickly. We began high school in September 1978 as nervous freshman trying to find our next class. We got our first taste of student government when, under the guidance of Mrs. Kathy Dalavalle and Mr. Andrew Chamra, we elected Sal Brucato as president, Robin Slivka as vice president, Geri Mendez as secretary, and LeighAnn Szymnaski as treasurer. Our new class officers were faced with the task of fund raising for our treasury. To do this we sponsored a St. Valentine’s Day dance, sold popcorn at the HRC Spring Fair and had numerous cake sales. President: Our sophomore year approached quickly and once again we elected new class Lynn Portugal officers. Sal Brucato remained our president, but this year Janet Mannino was elected vice president, Geril Vargo was secretary, and our new treasurer was Denise Zajac. Again, the problem of raising money faced us. This year, Mrs. Dalavalle and Mr. Chamra helped us to organize cake sales and our Sophomore- /Junior class St. Valentine’s Day dance at which we raised a total of $16.00. The end of sophomore year brought about the end of Mrs. Dalavalle’s career at C.H.S. Moving on to new career goals, she left us with the task of selecting a new female advisor. The selection was not too difficult to make because Mrs. Simon was so popular among the students of our class. Along with our new advisor, we elected Joe Vernachio as our new president and Patti Lynch as our new vice president. Geril and Denise remained our secretary and treasurer respectively. From the start of our Junior year, we began planning for the Junior prom. We chose to have our prom at the Dorian Manor with Alive ’N Kickin’ playing the prom song “ Comes a Vice-President: Patricia Lynch Time” by Neil Young. To decrease the cost of the prom, we raised money by sponsoring a St. Patrick’s Day Dance, a towel sale, and once again, a cake sale. Along with the Senior class and Mr. Spaldo, the play “ Get Smart” ran successfully. Finally, a year that we never thought would come had approached us. We were finally SENIORS!!! We began our last year at Carteret High with the same officers as we had Junior year with the exception of Lynn Portugal as president. Although our advisors remained the same, we learned that our principal was not the same. Due to Mr. King’s retirement, Mr. Gilrain stepped in as our new principal. Early in the year, we also received news that our ex-advisor, Mrs. Dalavalle, had a baby boy. From the start of the year, we began planning for the future events. We planned to visit Disneyworld and Wet & Wild on March 23-27 and began organizing our Senior Dinner Dance. To decrease the cost of the Senior trip and the dinner dance, we sold Nestle’s candy bars, chocolate Santa Clauses, and boosters. We leave Carteret High more mature and ready to accept the future with fond Treasurer: memories and fine friends.
