It has had different functions in different ages, and yet its purpose remains unchanged: witnessing to the constancy of God’s love for each of us in Christ, and offering a perspective on the world that each generation inhabits. Construction of the Cathedral began in 1096 and a monastic community was established based on the rigorous Rule of St Benedict. The monks and lay brothers lived and worked in buildings clustered around the cloisters, and worshipped day and night in the Cathedral Church. They were to offer unrestricted hospitality to pilgrims and those who came for help and advice. They were to be men of learning, offering their knowledge and their skills in the service of the wider community. Those same Benedictine principles apply today and shape the vision for the future. Worship continues every day, both in large services and also in the prayers of individual visitors. Our award-winning Refectory Restaurant has been built on the site of the original monastic dining hall and our Hostry Visitor and Education Centre on the site of the original Hostry guest hall. Both were designed by Sir Michael Hopkins and opened by HM The Queen in 2010. In April 2015, the Dean and Chapter launched its Strategic Plan. This sets down the aims and aspirations for the next five years. The Dean’s introduction gave a clear focus for our work:- “As we look to the years ahead, our focus will continue to be upon the worship of God and the service of His people – the people of the Diocese, the city and the wider community in East Anglia. In this five year strategic vision we pledge ourselves to making the very best use of our wonderful buildings to achieve the following: · To enhance the experience of visitors and pilgrims. · To provide imaginative space for music, theatre and the celebration of the arts, business and science. · To draw people to a place where they can exchange ideas in an atmosphere of openness and mutual respect. · To enable adults and children who come through our doors to discover the richness of the Gospel and its relevance to their daily lives. · To engage with the Diocesan vision for growth in discipleship, spirituality and the number of people regularly worshipping in our Churches. · To live by our core values.” The Cathedral continues to do what it has always done. It provides the opportunity for personal reflection and prayer; it connects us with the wider Church on earth and in heaven; it provides a focus for the Diocese of Norwich; it offers opportunities for celebration, learning and discovery. The Benedictine principles inform our Mission Statement: Norwich Cathedral is a Christian presence at the heart of Norfolk A place where all are welcome A place to share learning A place to grow in holiness 4 Cathedral Management Chapter forms the governing body of the Cathedral. It sets policy, direction and key objectives, approves strategy and the annual budget, monitors performance and oversees the affairs and administration of the Cathedral. Chapter is chaired by the Dean, as Head of Foundation. The four Residentiary Canons (Precentor, Mission & Pastoral Care, Treasurer and Librarian) are all members of Chapter, together with an Honorary Canon nominated by the Bishop and three Lay Canons appointed by the Bishop after consultation with the Dean and Chairman of the Cathedral Council. Chapter is assisted in its management by a number of committees which report to Chapter in an advisory capacity and make recommendations. The Cathedral Council acts as a “critical friend” to the Cathedral Chapter. Council considers proposals submitted by the Chapter in connection with the general direction and mission of the Cathedral. It receives and considers the annual budget, annual report and audited accounts. It supports the work of the Cathedral; spiritual, pastoral, evangelistic, social and ecumenical. The College of Canons as an honorary body receives and considers the annual report and audited accounts and takes an interest in the life of the Cathedral particularly in the wider context of the Diocese of Norwich. The Cathedral Refectory and Shop, form Norwich Cathedral Enterprises Limited, a separate trading company. All profits from Norwich Cathedral Enterprises Limited are gifted to the Cathedral to further its mission, worship and outreach. The Post and Further Background Information The post of Marketing Manager falls vacant due to the current post holder leaving us after four years, to join the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Community of St Anselm. The Cathedral’s marketing activity has developed significantly in recent years and forms an essential part of the organisation in terms of mission and outreach and engagement with wider and more diverse audiences. We now seek an innovative and enthusiastic individual to continue this progress. The Cathedral is first and foremost a place of worship, but it is also recognised as an iconic visitor attraction in the region and a high profile conference and events venue. The Marketing Manager role will require working across these varied areas and leading on the strategic direction for both commercial and non-commercial marketing across the organisation. Whilst wishing to achieve maximum exposure of the Cathedral to wide and varied audiences, it must be emphasised very strongly at the outset that Norwich Cathedral is very different to marketing compared with a major high street shop or company. The post-holder will have to engage quickly with the philosophy of the Chapter and appreciate and respect the sensitivities of what being a Cathedral means. In this respect we are seeking someone with a strong empathy with English Cathedrals, particularly Norwich Cathedral. This will be a focus for discussion as part of the interview process; the successful candidate will need to demonstrate strongly that they fully understand what marketing a Cathedral really means. The Marketing Manager is very much part of the “shop window” of Norwich Cathedral. They will play an ambassadorial role, representing and promoting the Cathedral within the wider community and media. In order to achieve maximum publicity, the Cathedral continually strives to engage in more forward diary planning, ensuring that constituent parties are brought in at an early stage and information is shared with the Marketing Manager. In this respect, the post-holder will need to foster and maintain good relationships across all departments within the Cathedral. 5 The Marketing Manager is seen as a central resource; providing marketing, publicity and communication tools to support the Dean & Chapter and departments across the Cathedral. In addition, the post-holder will lead on fostering good links and promoting the Cathedral to visitors through the various tourism bodies with which the Cathedral has links. The Cathedral’s website was redesigned three years ago and the Marketing Manager will be responsible for keeping this up to date and its further development. The Cathedral uses all of the major social media platforms. Whilst the Marketing Manager has responsibility for this, he/she is supported by a freelance specialist who works the equivalent of one day per week specifically dealing with social media. In recent months, two of the Residentiary Canons have also been given access to the Cathedral’s Social Media sites in order to try to boost coverage of the Cathedral’s liturgical life. Lay Canon Mary Rudd, a member of the Cathedral Chapter and Marketing and PR Specialist provides invaluable support to the Marketing Manager, especially in terms of advice and guidance on relationships with the local press and media. The role requires working in partnership with a wide range of organisations, such as The Diocese of Norwich, Norwich BID (incorporating Visit Norwich), Visit Norfolk, Norwich School and local businesses. Forming strong partnerships and delivering joint marketing activities for the benefit of the Cathedral is an important part of the role. In recent years, Norwich Cathedral has seen wide acclaim for its marketing activity, with national and international recognition. The #mycathedral campaign was singled out as a mark of innovative Cathedral marketing activity by Bernard Donoghue, the Director of the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions. Meanwhile, we engaged international film maker Rob Whitworth to create a film about Norwich Cathedral, which was also used in extensive marketing activity for the city of Norwich. In July 2020, the Cathedral will host Dippy the Dinosaur for four months. Dippy, from the Natural History Museum, is currently on a UK tour of selected venues and Norwich Cathedral will be the final host venue. We are already engaged in much preparatory work for this and the Marketing Manager will chair a sub group of local organisations looking at the marketing of this exciting project.
