Keats-Rohan (University of Oxford) A lot of ink has flowed on the subject, but there can be no doubt that the ‘mysterious’ Countess Lucy of Chester was William Malet’s thrice-married granddaughter, the daughter of Robert Malet’s sister and Turold the Sheriff of Lincoln (dead by 1079).1 The suggestion was first made by R. Kirk in 1888.2 As N. Sumner has more recently observed: ‘This account has the merit of explaining why the lordship of Spalding and other places in Lincolnshire were held after Ivo’s death not by Beatrice, his direct heir and the daughter of his marriage to Lucy,3 but by the later husbands of Lucy, Roger fitz Gerold and Ranulph Meschines.’4 It is clear from her charters that Lucy was an heiress; as was to be expected, her estates passed to the sons of her second and third marriages. Kirk’s work was based upon conjecture, and contained a number of errors. The question of Lucy’s parentage has therefore remained open. Nevertheless, there is proof that Kirk was right. A spurious charter of Crowland Abbey made Turold of Bucknall (the Sheriff) the founder of the priory of Spalding as a cell of Crowland. It also called Turold brother of Godiva countess of Mercia, but subsequently described Godiva’s son Earl Algar as Turold’s cognatus (cousin).5 A genealogia fundatoris of Coventry Abbey made Lucy a daughter of Earl Algar and sister and heiress of earls Edwin and Morcar.6 The Peterborough Chronicle and the Pseudo-Ingulf’s Chronicle of Crowland both made Lucy the daughter of Algar and niece or great-niece of Turold.7 We know that William Malet was half-English, so these traditions probably boil down to a relationship between Countess Godiva and William’s English mother. -

Using the heiresses of the earldoms and honours of Chester, Pembroke, Leicester and Winchester as case studies, this thesis sheds light on the processes of female inheritance and the effects of coparceny in a turbulent period of English history. The lives of the heiresses featured in this thesis span the reigns of three English kings: John, Henry III and Edward I. The reigns of John and Henry saw bitter civil wars, whilst Edward’s was plagued with expensive foreign wars. -

Cathedral music and the First World War: A view from the Archives of Durham, St Paul’s, and York Minster Enya Helen Lauren Doyle Master of Arts (by research) University of York Music July 2016 Abstract This thesis explores the impact of the First World War on English Cathedral music, both during the long four years and in its aftermath. Throughout this study, reference will be made specifically to three English cathedrals: York Minster, Durham and St Paul’s. The examination will be carried out chronologically, in three parts: before the war (part one), during the war (part two) and after the war (part three). Each of these three parts consists of two chapters. Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 help to set the scene and offer context. In chapters 2- 5 there is a more focused and systematic investigation into the day-to-day administrative challenges that the Cathedrals faced, followed in each chapter by an assessment of the musical programme. Chapter 6 examines the long-term impact of the war on British cathedral music, especially in the centenary anniversary years. The Great War is often perceived as a complete break with the past, yet it also represented an imaginative continuity of sorts. As such, 1914-18 can be seen as a period of twilight in a lot of senses. The war managed to bring the flirtation with modernism, which was undoubtedly happening at the beginning of the century, to at least a temporary halt. Through the examination of the archives of the three cathedrals, this thesis investigates how the world war left its mark on the musical life of this portion of English religious and music life, during and after the war, drawing national comparisons as well as showing the particulars of each cathedral. -

It has had different functions in different ages, and yet its purpose remains unchanged: witnessing to the constancy of God’s love for each of us in Christ, and offering a perspective on the world that each generation inhabits. Construction of the Cathedral began in 1096 and a monastic community was established based on the rigorous Rule of St Benedict. The monks and lay brothers lived and worked in buildings clustered around the cloisters, and worshipped day and night in the Cathedral Church. -

The Most Reverend and Right Hon the Lord Archbishop of Canterbury & The Most Reverend and Right Hon the Lord Archbishop of York July, 2008 Most Reverend Fathers in God, We write as bishops, priests and deacons of the Provinces of Canterbury and York, who have sought, by God’s grace, in our various ministries, to celebrate the Sacraments and preach the Word faithfully; to form, nurture and catechise new Christians; to pastor the people of God entrusted to our care; and, through the work of our dioceses, parishes and institutions, to build up the Kingdom and to further God’s mission to the world in this land. Our theological convictions, grounded in obedience to Scripture and Tradition, and attentive to the need to discern the mind of the whole Church Catholic in matters touching on Faith and Order, lead us to doubt the sacramental ministry of those women ordained to the priesthood by the Church of England since 1994. Having said that, we have engaged with the life of the Church of England in a myriad of ways, nationally and locally, and have made sincere efforts to work courteously and carefully with those with whom we disagree. In the midst of this disagreement over Holy Order, we have, we believe, borne particular witness to the cause of Christian unity, and to the imperative of Our Lord’s command that ‘all may be one.’ We include those who have given many years service to the Church in the ordained ministry, and others who are very newly ordained. We believe that we demonstrate the vitality of the tradition which we represent and which has formed us in our discipleship and ministry – a tradition which, we believe, constitutes an essential and invaluable part of the life and character of the Church of England, without which it would be deeply impoverished. -

Anglican Cathedrals in the British Isles Religion Media Centre Collaboration House, 77-79 Charlotte Street, London W1T 4LP | [email protected] Charity registration number: 1169562 Thousands of people are expected to visit English Cathedrals this Christmas for special services, carols and nativity plays. Figures produced by the Church of England in the annual ‘Cathedral Statistics’ suggest that Cathedrals continue to hold a special attraction in cities across the country. Christmas services in 2018 attracted 133,000 people but the numbers attending for services throughout Advent, including carol services, concerts and nativity plays topped 617,000. Attendance for Easter services was 58,000, with the numbers attending services in Holy week reaching 95,000. In total, almost 10 million people visited Cathedrals in England in 2018, a rise of almost one million on the previous year, with one third paying as visitors. The rise could be explained by extra events for the World War One Armistice Day commemorations, and by special events laid onto attract visitors such as art, music and space displays. But the number of people regularly worshipping in Cathedrals is much lower - only 36,700 people per week, down by 300 on the previous year, with attendance split evenly between Sunday worship and midweek services. EXPLAINER -- WHAT ARE CATHEDRALS? Cathedrals are the central churches in the dioceses or episcopal areas overseen by bishops. They are centres of learning, worship and Christian mission but also of the Anglican choral tradition, of living heritage and, even, tourism. Within each cathedral is the cathedra, the seat of the bishop and the Latin from which these central churches get their name. -

Part of a BA (Hons) Dissertation by Richard Buck Chapter One The Demise of Spalding Priory 1.1 Introduction The Priory once held an important place within the Lincolnshire town of Spalding for nearly five hundred years, its influence being felt upon many levels of society. However there are now virtually no tangible remains of what was once a substantial and important complex of buildings. The purpose of this paper is to make an attempt to separate archaeological facts from established local traditions. No concentrated archaeological excavation has been carried out upon the Priory site with the intention of locating remains, although work undertaken within the town centre has unearthed artefacts that can be associated with the Priory, details of which can be found in the subsequent HER report (Appendix 1). Although records from the Priory still exist, such as the Myntling Report (1476) held within the museum of the Spalding Gentlemen’s Society, visual records and exact plans for the location of the Priory precinct are difficult to locate, and as a consequence much of what is ‘known’ about Spalding Priory has passed into local tradition. There are a number of places associated with the Priory in Spalding, but very little hard archaeological evidence to support a valid connection. The only known contemporary illustration is from a fifteenth century map (Plate 1.). In order to make an attempt to separate historical fact from popular tradition various sources have been utilised from local histories and associated texts, maps of the town, illustrations where applicable, archaeological reports and references from local 1 historians.
