The area covered by the Neighbourhood Plan is the Lindfield and Lindfield Rural Parishes and incorporates the communities of Lindfield, Scaynes Hill and Walstead. Composing a Neighbourhood Plan is a very new and exciting way for communities such as ours to shape the future of the area we live in and I am very proud that our Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group, with a great deal of community support, has progressed your plan to the submission stage. The process of creating your Neighbourhood Plan is being led by members of your community and is part of the Government’s recently revised approach to planning, which aims to give local people more say about what happens in the area in which we live. -

English Turf Labyrinths Jeff Saward Turf labyrinths, or ‘turf mazes’ as they are popularly known in Britain, were once found throughout the British Isles (including a few examples in Wales, Scotland and Ireland), the old Germanic Empire (including modern Poland and the Czech Republic), Denmark (if the frequently encountered Trojaborg place-names are a reliable indicator) and southern Sweden. They are formed by cutting away the ground surface to leave turf ridges and shallow trenches, the convoluted pattern of which produces a single pathway, which leads to the centre of the design. Most were between 30 and 60 feet (9-18 metres) in diameter and usually circular, although square and other polygonal examples are known. The designs employed are a curious mixture of ancient classical types, found throughout the region, and the medieval types, found principally in England. Folklore and the scant contemporary records that survive suggest that they were once a popular feature of village fairs and other festivities. Many are found on village greens or commons, often near churches, but sometimes they are sited on hilltops and at other remote locations. By nature of their living medium, they soon become overgrown and lost if regular repair and re-cutting is not carried out, and in many towns and villages this was performed at regular intervals, often in connection with fairs or religious festivals. 50 or so examples are documented, and several hundred sites have been postulated from place-name evidence, but only eleven historic examples survive – eight in England and three in Germany – although recent replicas of former examples, at nearby locations, have been created at Kaufbeuren in Germany (2002) and Comberton in England (2007) for example. -

Agenda Item 7 Report PC15/17 Report to Planning Committee Date 9 March 2017 By Director of Planning Title of Report Revised Policies for the Pre-Submission South Downs Local Plan Purpose of Report To comment on the revised policies of the Pre-Submission South Downs Local Plan Recommendation: The Committee is recommended to 1) Endorse the direction of the policies as detailed in Appendices 1 to 7 of this report for inclusion in the Pre-Submission Local Plan document, subject to any comments made by the Planning Committee being addressed. 2) Note that the Pre-Submission Local Plan will be reported to Planning Committee for consideration prior to publication for public consultation, and 3) Note that the Pre-Submission Local Plan document will be subject to final approval by the National Park Authority. 1. Summary 1.1 This report introduces the following revised draft Local Plan policies, which are set out as appendices to this report: Appendix 1: Sites & Settlements Appendix 2: Strategic Sites Appendix 3: Affordable Housing Appendix 4: Green Infrastructure Appendix 5: Water Appendix 6: Climate Change Appendix 7: Design 1.2 The first recommendation is that they are endorsed for inclusion in the emerging Local Plan, subject to any comments made by the Planning Committee being addressed. This endorsement would also acknowledge that the policies may need further amendments prior to being incorporated into the whole document, in order to fit within other draft policies. Recommendations (2) and (3) also note that the complete draft Pre-Submission Local Plan will be reported to Planning Committee for consideration prior to final approval by the South Downs National Park Authority (SDNPA) for consultation. -

We just had time to admire Michelia doltsopa in flower before having to leave this interesting garden. Our final visit was to Fonmom Castle, the home of Sir Brooke Boothby who had very kindly invited us all to lunch. We sat at a long table in a room orig- inally built in 1180, and remodelled in Georgian times with beautiful plaster- work and furnishings. After lunch we had a tour of the garden which is on shallow limestone soil, and at times windswept. We admired a large Fagus syl- vatica f. purpurea planted on the edge of the escarpment in 1818, that had been given buttress walls to hold the soil and roots. There was a small Sorbus domes- tica growing in the lawn and we learnt that this tree is a native in the country nearby. We walked through the closely planted ornamental walled garden into the large productive walled vegetable garden. This final visit was a splen- did ending to our tour, and having thanked our host for his warm hospitality, we said goodbye to fellow members and departed after a memorable four days, so rich in plant content and well organised by our leader Rose Clay. ‘Daylight upon magic’: Stained Glass and the Victorian Monarchy Michael Ledger-Lomas If it help, through the senses, to bring home to the heart one more true idea of the glory and the tenderness of God, to stir up one deeper feeling of love, and thankfulness for an example so noble, to mould one life to more earnest walking after such a pattern of self-devotion, or to cast one gleam of brightness and hope over sorrow, by its witness to a continuous life in Christ, in and beyond the grave, their end will have been attained.1 Thus Canon Charles Leslie Courtenay (1816–1894) ended his account of the memorial window to the Prince Consort which the chapter of St George’s Chapel, Windsor had commissioned from George Gilbert Scott and Clayton and Bell. Erected in time for the wedding of Albert’s son the Prince of Wales in 1863, the window attempted to ‘combine the two ele- ments, the purely memorial and the purely religious […] giving to the strictly memorial part, a religious, whilst fully preserving in the strictly religious part, a memorial character’. For Courtenay, a former chaplain- in-ordinary to Queen Victoria, the window asserted the significance of the ‘domestic chapel of the Sovereign’s residence’ in the cult of the Prince Consort, even if Albert’s body had only briefly rested there before being moved to the private mausoleum Victoria was building at Frogmore. This window not only staked a claim but preached a sermon. It proclaimed the ‘Incarnation of the Son of God’, which is the ‘source of all human holiness, the security of the continuousness of life and love in Him, the assurance of the Communion of Saints’. -

One hundred years ago, the then headmaster of St Paul’s Cathedral Choir School, Reverend R H Couchman, joined his colleagues from King’s College School, Cambridge and Westminster Abbey Choir School to consider the sustainability of choir schools in the light of rigorous inspections of independent schools and regulations governing the employment of children being introduced under the terms of the Fisher Education Act. Although cathedral choristers were quickly exempted from the new employment legislation, the meeting led to the formation of the CSA, and Couchman was its honorary secretary until his retirement in 1937.
