    Dubai 2020: Dreamscapes, Mega Malls and Spaces of Post-Modernity Dubai’s hosting of the 2020 Expo further authenticates its status as an example of an emerging Arab city that displays modernity through sequences of fragmented urban- scapes, and introvert spaces. The 2020 Expo is expected to reinforce the image of Dubai as a city of hybrid architectures and new forms of urbanism, marked by technologically advanced infrastructural systems. This paper revisits Dubai’s spaces of the spectacle such as the Burj Khalifa and themed mega malls, to highlight the power of these spaces of repre- sentation in shaping Dubai’s image and identity. INTRODUCTION MOHAMED EL AMROUSI Initially, a port city with an Indo-Persian mercantile community, Dubai’s devel- Abu Dhabi University opment along the Creek or Khor Dubai shaped a unique form of city that is con- stantly reinventing itself. Islomania in the United Arab Emirates This chapter aims at revealing cultural and societal aspects of the megaengi- neering of artificial islands and other island development projects in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The UAE is a federation established in 1971 of seven traditional sheikhdoms or emirates, located on the Arabian coast of the Persian Gulf. The largest emirate Abu Dhabi; and also the name of the capital, but perhaps most famous is the city and emirate of Dubai for its many spectacular and extravagant megaprojects. The number and size of these new island projects can be understood by studying the elaborate chapter ‘‘Infrastructure’’ in the latest official United Arab Emirates Yearbook 2009. This chapter recounts for several projects of this kind that will be the starting point for my article and explained below in detail: In Abu Dhabi city the yearbook mentions that the islands named Sowwah, Al Reem, Saadiyat, Yas and Lulu are undergoing reclamation. In Dubai the world’s largest artificial archipelago called The World has been finalized and the three large man-made Palm Islands are under construction with one recently being completed. In the coastal areas of the smaller and poorer northern emir- ates, islands are being developed as well, following the pattern of the larger emirates. These islands are all under development, and facts regarding them can not be found in literature yet, but rather on the developing companies’ homepages.

    ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT Key factors in the UAE’s successful economic performance have been a strong oil market, development of public joint stock companies, enlargement of free zones, a buoyant local stock market and launches of several new mega-projects. 71 ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT THE ECONOMY A 20-YEAR PERIOD OF FISCAL DEFICITS in the UAE’s consolidated government financial accounts came to an end in 2005 when it posted a Dh38.2 billion surplus. Public revenues rose by 69.3 per cent to reach Dh160.5 billion, while public spending increased Astute economic by 27 per cent to reach Dh122.3 billion. The resulting surplus policies provided contrasted with a deficit of Dh1.5 billion in 2004.     346 Erdkunde Band 60/2006 ECONOMY OF FASCINATION: DUBAI AND LAS VEGAS AS EXAMPLES OF THEMED URBAN LANDSCAPES With 4 figures and 3 photos HEIKO SCHMID Zusammenfassung: Ökonomie der Faszination: Dubai und Las Vegas als Beispiele thematisch inszenierter Stadtlandschaften Hohe Investitionen im Immobilien- und Tourismussektor sowie stark ansteigende Tourismus- und Zuwanderungszahlen haben in Dubai und Las Vegas zu einem anhaltenden Wirtschaftsboom geführt. Gleichzeitig ist vor dem Hintergrund einer Urban Governance und der Übertragung von Kompetenzen an private und semi-staatliche Akteure in beiden Metropolen ein rascher Stadtumbau mit unzähligen Erlebnis-, Einkaufs- und Kunstwelten initiiert worden. Eine Entwicklung, die durch eine weitgehende Inszenierung der Lebenswelt und vor allem eine „Ökonomie der Faszination” geprägt ist: Kasino- und Hotel- landschaften, die verschiedene Schauplätze vom antiken Rom bis zum heutigen New York simulieren, künstliche Inseln in Gestalt von Palmen oder ganzen Weltkarten sowie weitere Superlative in Form von thematisch inszenierten Einkaufszentren und Sportarenen sind die augenscheinlichsten Folgen dieser rasanten Entwicklung. Dubai und Las Vegas sind damit nicht nur Vorreiter einer allgemeinen Kommerzialisierung und Erlebnisorientierung im Zeitalter wirtschaftlicher und kultureller Globalisierung, sondern auch Extrembeispiele einer postmodernen Stadtentwicklung. Im vorliegenden Beitrag werden anhand der beiden Beispiele Dubai und Las Vegas Leitlinien für eine Forschungs- perspektive „Ökonomie der Faszination” entwickelt. Für ein analytisches Verständnis sind zunächst allgemeine Trends und Entwicklungslinien vor dem Hintergrund von Urban Governance, Erlebnisorientierung und Kommerzialisierung wesentlich. Sie ergeben den Ausgangspunkt für eine Analyse der Wirkungsmechanismen von „Aufmerksamkeit” und „Faszination”, die als wesentliche Aspekte einer „Ökonomie der Faszination” gesehen werden.     The Engineering Geological Characterisation of the Barzaman Formation, with reference to Coastal Dubai, UAE Steve Macklin Associate Director, Arup Geotechnics, London e-mail: [email protected] Richard Ellison Regional Manager, British Geological Survey Jason Manning Senior Geologist, Arup Geotechnics, London Andrew Farrant Geologist, British Geological Survey Leon Lorenti Senior Geotechnical Engineer, Arup Pty Ltd, Perth Abstract This paper describes, from field exposures, temporary excavations and borehole core, the pedogenically altered fluvial deposits found in the UAE termed the Barzaman Formation. This formation comprises a sequence of rocks dominated by variably cemented conglomerates thought to be middle Miocene to Pliocene in age. The sequence is interpreted as an alluvial fan succession (or “bajada”) laid down in response to uplift and erosion of the Hajar Mountains. A ground model for this formation is described to explain the distinct lithological features of the formation, comprising terrestrial fluvial and alluvial plain deposits that have been modified by cementation and dolomitisation, duricrust formation and pedogenic processes during arid periods over repeated climatic cycles. Four principle lithologies thus typically occur as a rhythmic alternation of a basal conglomerate (composed predominantly of clasts of ophiolite and chert) overlain by an irregular bed of white conglomerate and “calcisiltite” and passing upwards into a pale grey to green clay and siltstone “breccia”. The white conglomerate and calcisiltite largely represent deposits of dolomite-palygorskite duricrust. The well established Clarke & Walker (1979) descriptive scheme currently used for describing the formation is reviewed and a simple visual descriptive lithological classification proposed. The classification is described in terms of the three principal lithological components visible in hand specimen: mottled white calcisiltite matrix/cement, palygorskite rich marl and clasts derived from the Oman Mountains (gabbro, chert and weathered ultramafic rock).

Doch mittlerweile bin ich auf jeden Baukran persönlich stolz und berichte staunenden Besuchern mit viel Leidenschaft von den ehrgeizigen Plänen der Wüstenmetropole.
