8 ABOUT THE WALKER TEXAS TECH SOCCER

JOHN WALKER SOCCER COMPLEX Finished in 2008, the John Walker Soccer Complex features a 1,500-seat grandstand designed to keep fans close to the action and includes a soccer house outfitted with team locker rooms, athletic training facilities, coaches’ offices, coaches’ lounge, the Red Raider lounge (a public lounge), a team lounge equipped with a state-of-the art video system for film study, a team weight room and an Under Armour equipment room. Players enjoy a “boot room” located immediately inside the facility as a place dedicated to their footwear.

The $5 million facility is the only soccer pitch in the Big 12 Conference equipped with FieldTurf, a mix of syn- thetic blades of grass supported by an infill of sand and rubber. FieldTurf was the first synthetic turf system to receive FIFA recommended status according to the manufacturer’s website. The state-of-the-art playing field surface is currently used at 50 NCAA facilities and 21 NFL stadiums nationwide. Ample outdoor warm up areas are ensured by virtue of a separate practice pitch south of the main complex.

Construction of the soccer complex began in 2006 with the soccer pitch installed in time for the 2008 season and the rest of the facility completed in time for the 2009 campaign. The John Walker Soccer Complex was designed by Parkhill Smith and Cooper, and features an iron entry gate emblazoned with the Double T. The gate, designed by Lars Stanley Metalworks of Austin is part of the university’s award-winning public art collection. Lee Lewis Construction served as the contractor for the project.

John Walker is CEO and president of EnerVest Management Partners in Houston. He graduated from Texas Tech University in 1968 with a bachelor of business administration degree in finance.

The John Walker Soccer Complex was completed in Septem- RED RAIDERS AT THE WALKER ber 2009 and was dedicated on Oct. 2, 2009, after he, his FIRST EVENT wife, Lisa, and their family contributed $2.25 million toward Aug. 22, 2008 vs. Lamar (W, 4-0) the project, earning the naming rights.

10 MEET THE CAPTAINS TEXAS TECH SOCCER

MARGARET BEGLEY | 6TH YR | DEFENDER | OMAHA, NEB. Margaret Begley’s tenure as a team captain will continue for a rare second year, though her leadership has been prevalent for much longer. The first sixth-year in program history, Begley will re- turn hoping to keep Tech’s defense atop the Big 12 rankings in goals against for a third straight season. The Omaha, Neb., native completed an inspiring comeback from back-to-back ACL tears last season to see action in 19 games, including three starts. In addition to her fearlessness on the field, she has been praised for her ability to relate to and motivate all ages on the roster. Following her amazing comeback season in 2019, Begley was awarded the Adam Zuniga Award for Courage, reserved for Tech Soccer players who demonstrate extraordinary spirit and courage in the face of significant adversity. It was just the third time the award had been presented.

KIRSTEN DAVIS | SR | FORWARD | ST. LOUIS, MO. Kirsten Davis, now a senior, will serve as a captain for the first time in her career. The forward’s 2019 season cemented her as one of the bets forwards in program history. What started with a program record for most goals through six games (six) turned into an incredible feat, culminating in 11 goals through her first 11 games. Davis would score five more times for a season total of 16. Six of her scores were game-winners, tying a program record. By season’s end, Davis would be voted Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, recognized as a First Team All-American and named a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy.

CASSIE HIATT | JR | DEFENDER | PARKER, COLO. Cassie Hiatt will find herself a rare junior captain. The six-footer from esteemed club Real Colorado established herself as one of the Big 12’s and nation’s top defenders. She began her career at outside back, where she picked up Big 12 All-Freshman honors. In 2019, when she was moved back to her original center back position, Hiatt truly shined. By season’s end, she would collect Third Team All-America honors as well as recognition as a First Team All-Midwest and First Team All-Big 12 player. Hiatt’s play was noticed in the higher echelons of American soccer, as she was called up to the U.S. U-20 National Team following the season for the Nike International Friendlies against Brazil and France in December. 158 » TECH’S CAPTAINS HAVE A COMBINED 158 GAMES OF EXPERIENCE UNDER THEIR BELTS DURING THEIR COLLEGE CAREERS.

YEAR SIX FOR BEGLEY - Tom Stone on pursuing a 2020 season Texas Tech defender Margaret Begley will return for a sixth season, making her the program’s first-ever sixth- year senior after receiving a clock extension waiver from the NCAA. Begley, who missed the 2017 and 2018 seasons after back-to-back ACL tears, returned to the field last year as a captain and played in 19 games. With her presence on the back line, the Red Raiders tied a program record for Big 12 wins with six and finished just two points shy of their first regular season conference title in school history. Her desire to return to the field compelled Stone to award her with the Adam Zuniga Award for Courage at the team’s annual end-of-season banquet. 15 ABOUT TOM STONE TEXAS TECH SOCCER

TRANSFORMING A PROGRAM On May 25, 2007, Tom Stone was named the fourth head coach in Texas Tech soccer history. Prior to his arrival at Texas Tech, the team had a record of 6–63–1 in Big 12 play and had gone 0-10-0 in conference four of the previous six seasons. In Stone’s first year and half as coach, the team quickly matched that win total, going 6–5–1 in conference play. In 2010 – Stone’s fourth year with the team – the Red Raiders went 11-8-1, marking the program’s third-ever winning record and first in 15 seasons. Two years later, the Red Raiders made the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history and beat North Texas, 2-0, in the program’s debut in postseason play. They would lose to Florida State, 2-3, in double overtime in the second round.

In 2013, the Red Raiders made another appearance in the second round after recording a program-record 18 wins. In 2014, Stone’s squad won 16 games and climbed as high as sixth in the national coaches’ polls before advancing to the program’s first-ever Sweet Sixteen. For the breakout campaign, he was named the NSCAA Central Region Coach of the Year. In 2015, the Red Raiders won their first-ever Big 12 Championship, defeating Kansas, 1-0. The year also saw Stone pick up his 100th win at the helm of the Red Raider program when the team beat South Florida, 2-1.

The Red Raiders went .500 the following two seasons – and missed the tournament altogether in 2017 – but came back to go 14-5-3 in 2018, beating a program-record four ranked opponents and leading the nation in shutouts with 14 in the process. In 2019, the squad nearly captured its first Big 12 regular season crown ever, coming just two points from the title while going 6-1-2 in conference.

PRIOR TO TECH Stone’s first coaching job was as a part-time assistant at the University of Denver in 1996 and as a volunteer assistant at Duke in HEAD COACH 1997. Then, from 1997–2000, Stone coached girls’ soccer for the Colorado Rush youth soccer club. Under his leadership, the team won 35 state cups, 12 regional championships and eight national championships. He left the Rush to coach professionally in the Women’s United Soccer Association.
