Archeology in the Fontainebleau Forest François BEAUX If you examine closely an archeological map showing all artifacts remaining from the ancient times in the South of the Seine-et-Marne department, you will see an « archeological hole » in the Fontainebleau Forest area. The dryness of the soil and the overall lack of water were in fact responsible for the very poor settlement rates of prehistorian and later humans in that area. Actually the late king Saint Louis (Louis the 9th), when speaking about this wood, said « my dear deserts ». Only some places nearby the Seine river, the Loing river and the water sources of the Ru de Changis were inhabitated. About the small hunting pavilion situated nerby the Fountain Belle Eau (or Belleau or Bliaud ?) we know nothing but that it was one of the ancient sites of settlement ; and that it gave birth to the future castle and later palace with the town around. However, the people dwelling around frequenly traveled through this area ; they left us many objects and traces on the stones proving their presence and showing that the forest (which was then called « Sylva Biera », i.e. « wood of Bière ») was not devoid of humans. PALEOLITHIC ERA (before 10,000 B.C.) Silex fragments and cut stones typical of the mousterian age with traces of cutting of the « Levallois » type have been found during a pedologic search in 1974 near the big cross of the Grand Veneur. Another fragment of the same type has been found at the Long Rocher site (figure 1). Those two artifacts are dated from the middle Paleolithic, i.e. -

Wood Interior, Sunlight Bathes a Forest Clearing Created by a Break in a Dense Canopy of Trees
Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum Spotlight Series: July 2008 by Rachel Keith, associate registrar In Narcisse Virgile Diaz de la Peña’s 1867 painting Wood Interior, sunlight bathes a forest clearing created by a break in a dense canopy of trees. Sparkling sunlight dances across the tree trunks and foliage at the center of the canvas; around its perimeter, gnarled branches interlace to form a rich tapestry of leaves and bark. This dark, tunnel-like frame simultaneously emulates the impenetrable depths of the forest and functions as a bridge between the viewer’s space and the forest’s interior. Diaz de la Peña, known in his day as a first-rate colorist and a master of light, harnessed dramatic effects of color and light to simulate the sensations of walking through a dense forest.1 Serving as a portal into the furthest depths of Fontainebleau Forest, Wood Interior immerses viewers in what many understood to be a depiction of pristine nature, devoid of any sign of both man and modernization. The opportunity for a moment’s escape provided by such a painting would have been especially enticing to nineteenth-century urban dwellers desperate to connect with a natural world that seemed further and further removed from their experience of life in the modern city. 2 The Barbizon school, a loosely associated group of landscapists working between 1830 and 1870, produced paintings of the French countryside that were much beloved as they offered viewers a brief reprieve from the realities of everyday urban life. At the same time, these artists were living out their own escapist desires in the rustic village of Barbizon, on the edge of the Forest of Fontainebleau .3 As a core member of the group, Diaz de la Peña shared their utopian aspirations to experience nature and rural life directly, and to depict such scenes poetically through painterly techniques that highlighted the subjective expressions of the artist. -

Barbizon School The Barbizon school of painters were part of an art movement towards Realism in art, which arose in the context of the dominant Romantic Movement of the time. The Barbizon school was active roughly from 1830 until 1870. It takes its name from the village of Barbizon, France, near the Forest of Fontainebleau, where many of the artists gathered. Some of the most prominent features of this school are its tonal qualities, colour, loose brushwork, and softness of form. In 1824 the Salon de Paris exhibited works of John Constable. His rural scenes influenced some of the younger artists of the time, moving them to abandon formalism and to draw inspiration directly from nature. Natural scenes became the subjects of their paintings rather than mere backdrops to dramatic events. During the Revolutions of 1848 artists gathered at Barbizon to follow Constable's ideas, making nature the subject of their paintings. The French landscape became a major theme of the Barbizon painters. The leaders of the Barbizon school were Théodore Rousseau, Jean-François Millet, and Charles-François Daubigny. As such, the essays in this book are not about Calton Hill, but instead represent a view from it, or more specifically, a view from a building positioned on its peak: the City Observatory. -
