2014 Football Outlook “Football is an honest game. It’s true to life. It’s a game about sharing. Football is a team game. So is life.” This quote by Joe Namath describes football, the team and life in a few short lines. It speaks of the Tuskegee University spirit and perception. With 652 wins, TU can proudly say it holds the most wins of all Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

The 2014 Tuskegee University Golden Tiger football team has made major strides to get bigger, more aggressive and faster. With the addition of some key freshman in key positions, the Golden Tigers are poised to be a force to be reckoned with this season. On the offensive side of the ball, Tuskegee averaged 31.55 points per game, while holding their opponents to 17.00. As a freshman, Hoderick Lowe paced the Golden Tigers’ offensive strike with a net of 504 yards rushing on 86 attempts. He also recorded eight touchdowns; while averaging 45.82 yards per game. Michael J. Thornton is a returning running back that logged 330 yards and nine touchdowns on 60 attempts.

On the receiving side, Marquel Gardner is returning after leading the team with 614 yards and five touchdowns on 31 receptions. Larry Cobb is also a player to watch after an explosive 487 yard, four-touchdown season on 24 receptions. The receivers were able to make big plays in part because of the energy and accuracy of Quarterback Justin Nared. Nared is a returning veteran and will look to build upon last year’s success. He played in only nine games but pulled a 126.40 passing efficiency while completing 53 passes on 104 attempts, with only three passes ending in the hands of the opponents’ defense. Nared passed for 809 yards and five touchdowns. On average he passed for 89.89 yards per game.

Defensively, El’Malik Chinn returns to protect the Golden Tigers’ end zone, after completing last season with 46 solo tackles and 40 tackle assists for a total of 86 tackles. He had three breakups and one sack for a loss of two yards. His heroics on the field did not end there; he also recorded six tackles for a loss of 11 yards. Veteran defender Marquiste Mason is also returning on the defensive side of the ball. Last season Mason played in 10 games, recording 35 solo tackles, 30 assists for a total of 65 tackles, three tackles for a loss of seven yards, one interception returned for seven yards, and one breakup. With the right components for success the Golden Tigers are seeking to not only return to the NCAA Division 2 Playoffs but to win after falling just shy of defeating the University of North Alabama in their first ever playoff appearance.
