Former Morehouse All-SIAC quarterback Jerome Boger has established himself as a top tier NFL official, recently serving as the head official for Superbowl XLVII between the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers. Playing a key role in that same contest was Lane alum and current Ravens wide receiver/kick returner Jacoby Jones, who scored two touchdowns in the game. Jones highlights an impressive roster of former SIAC student- athletes playing in the league. Overall, the conference has produced more than 300 NFL players. Gaither posted a 203-36-4 record (.835) and guided Florida A&M to six black college national championships, coupled with 22 SIAC titles during his 25-year 2017-18 SIAC Commissioner’s Cup Standings tenure as head coach. Cleve Abbott coached all sports at Tuskegee during his 32 years at the school from 1923-1955. During this time, he won 11 SIAC football championships and Seven black college national championships. Abbott’s teams were frontrunners in the conference during the 1920’s, posting six undefeated seasons while winning 46 Men’s Commissioner’s Cup consecutive games. From 1936-56, Abbott coached track and field, winning 25 of the 36 national AAU Championships in which his Tigers teams participated. Albany State 31 Morehouse 27 The SIAC’s renowned history extends to the hardwood, as two of the first four blacks selected to play in the NBA were from the conference. Some of the former stars, who Benedict 25 have enjoyed success in the NBA include: Florida A&M’s Nate “Sweetwater” Clifton and Clemon Johnson, in addition to the Jones brothers – Caldwell, Charles, Major and Wilbert Tuskegee 14 of Albany State. Former Temple University head coach John Chaney began his basketball career at Bethune- Clark Atlanta 7 Cookman, where he scored more than 3,500 points and led the Wildcats to an SIAC Championship in the late 1950’s. Long-time Fort Valley State women’s basketball head Fort Valley State 7 coach Lonnie Bartley became the all-time winningest black college women’s basketball Kentucky State 7 coach in 2012 after 28 seasons at the helm. Both Chaney and Bartley are 2014 SIAC Hall of Fame inductees. Central State 0 The SIAC has also made significant footprints on a global scale in track and field. In Lane 0 1948, Alice Coachman became the first black woman to win a gold medal as she captured the gold in the high jump at the London Games. At the Barcelona Olympics in 1992, LeMoyne-Owen 0 Tuskegee graduate Barbara Jacket, was an Olympic coach with the track and field team. Paine 0 In 1996, Benedict College graduate Dr. Leroy T. Walker became the first African-American appointed President of the United States Olympic committee. Other Olympic notables Spring Hill 0 are: Catherine Hardy of Fort Valley State (1st place in the 400 meter relay in 1952); Mildred McDaniel of Tuskegee (1st place in the high jump in 1956); Bob Hayes of Florida A&M (1st place in the 100 meter dash in 1964); Jearl Miles-Clark of Alabama A&M (1st Place 4x400 meter in 1996 and 2000), Dannette Young (1st place in the 400 meter relay Women’s Commissioner’s Cup in 1998) and Edwin Moses of Morehouse (1st place in the 400 meter hurdles in 1976 and Albany State 31 1984) who went 10 years without a loss in hurdle competition. Benedict 21 One of the greatest tennis players of All-Time, Althea Gibson of Florida A&M, competed in the SIAC. In 1957, Gibson became the first black to win a singles title at Wimbledon Tuskegee 17 and is now a member of the National Tennis Hall of Fame. Miles 7 The conference has also achieved a level of success in baseball, which includes a World Claflin 7 Series MVP. Donn Clendenon, an alumnus of Morehouse, was named the MVP of the 1969 World Series as a member of the New York Mets. Florida A&M’s Andre Dawson, formerly Clark Atlanta 4 of the Montreal Expos and Chicago Cubs, became the first player from the conference inducted into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY. Both Fort Valley State 4 Clendenon and Dawson are 2014 SIAC Hall of Fame inductees. Others making history in Kentucky State 0 baseball include Bill Lucas, another alumni of Florida A&M, who became MLB’s first black general manager with the Atlanta Braves in 1978 after his playing career. Central State 0 The SIAC concluded a banner year in 1993 as member institutions competed for NCAA Lane 0 Division II Championships in eight different sports. Albany State made its first trip to the playoffs after posting an 11-0 season; Alabama A&M’s women’s outdoor track and field LeMoyne-Owen 0 team won their second consecutive National Championship, while their men’s outdoor Paine 0 team finished 10th in the nation; A&M’s men’s and women’s indoor track and field team both finished in the top five in the country while their cross country team won the Spring Hill 0 southeastern regional title and finished eighth at nationals; A&M’s men’s and women’s basketball squads each made the playoff appearances.

The SIAC is also home to both the longest running rivalry and the winningest team in black college football. Morehouse and Tuskegee have met 106 times since their inaugural contest in 1902. Willie Slater enters his second year as the Director of Athletics at Tuskegee University and holds 40 years of experience in athletics and coaching, will remain the school’s head football coach.

Slater is set to enter his 13th season as head football coach after originally being hired on January 17, 2006. Going into the 2018 season, Slater has 40 seasons of coaching experience which include 34 years at the collegiate level. Over half of those years – 18 – were spent as an offensive coordinator at multiple levels.

In his role as AD, Slater oversees the University’s NCAA Division II athletic program advancement, budgeting, compliance, operations, student-athlete recruitment and professional staffing and development. He also will serve as a member of the President’s Executive Cabinet.

During his time at Tuskegee, Slater has recorded a record of 110-29, which ranks him second all-time in wins at the university. Last season he passed placing him behind Cleve Abbott (202 victories). He is currently the leader in winning percentage for a career at the school, with a percentage of .789. During his tenure, Slater has coached 59 SIAC All-Conference selections, and numerous All-Americans

He is widely known for being the first head coach in school history to earn a bid in the NCAA Division II Playoffs (2013). One season later in 2014, the Golden Tigers made a historical run that reached the quarterfinals (the Super 2 Region championship game) against West Georgia. The team finished with a 10-3 record overall and second in the SIAC West Division. Under Slater’s guidance, the team has made a total of four playoff appearances at TU.

Slater and the Golden Tigers have claimed six SIAC championships since 2006, including a string of four consecutive from 2006 until 2009. He also helped the lead the Golden Tigers to their eighth HBCU national championship in 2007 with a 12-0 record. Tuskegee has recorded nine wins in eight of Slater’s first 10 seasons at the helm, and have recorded a winning season in nine of the 10 seasons under his direction.

A five-time NCAA Division II National Assistant Coach of the Year, Slater has five NCAA Division II national championships on his resume. He joined the Tuskegee staff as the head coach after serving as the offensive coordinator at Temple University (FBS member) in 2005 under Bobby Wallace.

His first stop as a full-time collegiate coach came Troy University (1983-90), where he served as the running backs under Chan Gailey (1983-84). In total, he spent eight seasons with the Trojans, also working as the quarterbacks and running backs coach.

Slater also had stints at West Alabama, North Alabama, and Jacksonville State between the years of 1991-2003.

Following his stints at several of the top NCAA Division II schools in the state of Ala- bama, Slater moved to another under then-head coach Jack Crowe at Jacksonville State University (2000-03). During his stay at Jacksonville State, the Gamecocks won the Ohio Valley Conference in 2003 with a 7-1 record (8-4 overall). During a stellar career of working with programs in Divisions I-A, I-AA and II, Slater has had the pleasure of coaching numerous players who have taken those skills to the NFL playing for teams such as the New England Patriots, Carolina Panthers, Washington Redskins among others. Prior to his full-time collegiate coaching career, Slater served as a graduate assistant at the University of West Alabama after his playing career for one year. He moved on from the collegiate ranks to the high school ranks where he coached at Jess Lanier (1979-80) in Bessemer, Ala., then at T.R. Miller High School (1981-82) in Brewton.

Before coaching, Slater shined on the playing field, both in high school and college. He was a four-year starter at quarterback for West Alabama, then called Livingston College, from 1974 until 1977 and helped the Tigers to a third place finish in the 1975 NCAA Division II playoffs. He still ranks sixth in career rushing at the school with 1,582yards and 20 touchdowns and is ninth in career total offense with 2,081 yards. His 90-yard run against Troy State in 1975 still stands as the longest run from scrimmage. Andre Brunson Strength and Conditioning Tuskegee, 1991

A native of Lake Wales, Fla., Brunson enters his 21st year of coaching at Tuskegee.

Last season, Brunson earned his 12th SIAC Football Championship (11 coaching and one as a player) which is the most of any other active staff member. An International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA) certified strength and conditioning coach, Burnson played football at Tuskegee from 1985-89. He was a starter on the Golden Tigers’ SIAC championship football team of 1987. Brunson is a 1991 graduate of Tuskegee, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in social work.

He served as the strength coach and linebacker coach at Booker T. Washington High School, Tuskegee, Ala., from 1992-96, and defensive coordinator from 1993-96.

Brunson is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and is a USPF nationally ranked weight lifter.

Brunson is the newly-elected Sheriff of Macon County, and he has served as a Truant Officer and SWAT Team member for the Macon County Sheriff Department. Since 1991, Brunson has worked in local law enforcement in Macon County, Alabama.

He and his wife, Courtney, are the parents of four children: Kambria, Tahlia; twin, Shonte’ and Andre’ Jr. Both Kambria and Tahlia are currently students at Tuskegee University. He also has one grandchild, Jeremy Cloud, Jr.
