    PRACE GEOGRAFICZNE, zeszyt 112 Instytut Geografii i Gospodarki Przestrzennej UJ Kraków 2003 Czesław Guzik, Jan Leśnicki DEVELOPMENT OF RURAL SETTLEMENT IN PODHALE Abstract: In their paper the authors discussed the historical development of the settlement inthe Podhale Region, since the Middle Ages to the contemporary epoch, against the natural conditions and evolution of the political situation. Various functional types of rural settlement were shown, with the spatial patterns and traditional forms of farm architecture, observed in this part of Poland. Key words: Podhale, rural settlement, history, architecture, spatial pattern 1. An outline of history Natural conditions in the Podhale region were less favourable for the settlement than those in other parts of Poland. In the Middle Ages eve the discussed area was covered by forest, its flat zones were swampy and marshy, the severe climate and poor soils were also discouraging factors. Moreover, this peripheral region was dangerous and needed a military protection. The first settlers came from the Vistula river valley, along its tributaries. Thepermanent settlement has been developed here since the 13th c. Its proves are names of rivers and streams in documents, i.e. Biały and Czarny Dunajec, Wielki and Mały Rogoźnik, Piekielnik, Leśnica and Poroniec (Dobrowolski 1935). The above mentioned settlers originated from the regions of the early cities – those of Cracow, Bochnia and Sandomierz. There were three main routes of their migration – the Cracow route, along the Raba and Skawa valleys, the Sandomierz route (the earliest one) along the Dunajec river valley, and the Szczyrzyc route. The latter one started at Szczyrzyc monastery, the Cisterian one.

Na mocy decyzji Rady Ambasado- rów z dnia 28 lipca 1920 r. mała część (170 km²), czyli 4,64% żupy spiskiej (spišská župa, comi- tatus scepusiensis, szepes megye, zipser Komitat), została przyłączona do II Rzeczypospolitej. Na inkorporowanym przez Polskę terytorium znajdowało się 14 wsi, w których mieszkało około 9000 ludzi. W trzech wioskach polskiego Spisza – Falsztyn, Niżne Łapsze, Niedzica – stosunki pań- szczyźniane (zsellérség, želiarstvo, żelarstwo) przetrwały do 1934 r. Stało się tak dlatego, że dwie ustawy węgierskie (nr IX/1848 i nr XI/1848) znosiły powinności feudalne jedynie poddanych ur- barialnych (urbéri zsellérek, urbárialní želiari), nie likwidowały natomiast pańszczyzny i innych powinności feudalnych żelarzyUMCS umownych (egyezményi zsellérek, zmluvní želiari, kontraktuali- sti). Zniesienie pańszczyzny tej grupy żelarzy i ich uwłaszczenie nastąpiło dopiero na podstawie ustawy węgierskiej nr XXV/1896. Na podstawie art. 1 ustawy z dnia 26 października 1921 r. w przedmiocie przepisów prawnych, obowiązujących na obszarze Spisza i Orawy należących do Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej (Dz.U., nr 89, poz. 657), wspomniana ustawa obowiązywała również w Polsce. Polski ustawodawca zdecydował jednak, spełniając przedplebiscytowe obietnice, o wy- daniu polskiej ustawy znoszącej żelarstwo w Falsztynie, Niżnych Łapszach i Niedzicy.

It is a treeless alkaline fen located close to the village of Czarny Dunajec (Nowy Targ region, S. Poland). The site is the north-western extension of the Western Carpathian distribution of the species, being more than 30 km away from the previ- ously known Polish site near Niedzica village and also from its known sites in Slovakia. The first recent record of Pupilla pratensis (Clessin) in Poland was found in the north-easternmost part of Poland close to the border with Lithuania, in the vicinity of the village of Rowele. It is an extension of the species’ distribution in NW. Europe and also the easternmost known record of this taxon. Both species are exclusive inhabitants of calcareous fens and fen meadows, highly endangered and mostly isolated, and deserve attention of nature conservation agen- cies. They seem to be very rare in Poland, because no further population was documented at 25 suitable alkaline fen sites sampled mainly in 2010 and 2011 across the southern and eastern part of Poland. Its filling began in 1995 and ended in 1997. The reservoir of 234.5 million m3 capacity is shallow, between 20 to 50 m of water column, on average. Until 2011 the seismic activity in this region was sparse, some 1 event trimonthly. However, in November 2011 more than 60 events occurred. Such bursts of activity, separated by low activity periods, continue to ap- pear. Since August 2013 the area is monitored by a local seismic net- work. The setup allows to accurately locate the epicenters and to determine source mechanisms for stronger events. The events are clus- tered and aligned along NE-SW direction and their mechanisms are very similar, indicating N-S strike slip faulting. This and the irregular pattern of activity suggest that this seismicity is triggered by the reservoir im- poundment. Key words: triggered and induced seismicity, Pieniny Klippen Belt. 1. Day 1: Krakow and its surroundings. Arrival in Krakow. Meeting with the guide and start with a "warm-up" tour of Krakow by bike - we go to the center, then a trip to Tyniec along the Vistula River. The route runs along a specially prepared bicycle route, running along the Vistula flood embankments. An unquestionable advantage of this path is its attractive location. On one side, we are constantly accompanied by a beautiful view of the Wolski Forest and the Monastery of oo. Camaldolese and the Faculty of Polish Studies of the Jagiellonian University, on the other, you can see the towns of Bodzów and Kostrze near Krakow. Visit to the monastery. Return to Krakow for the night. Dinner at the hotel or in a traditional restaurant. Day 2 - Krakow - Ojców - Prądnik Valley - Pieskowa Skała and Kluczwody Valley - Krakow. Breakfast at the hotel. On this day, we will admire the beauty of the nature of Dolinki Podkrakowskie. These are very attractive areas for cyclists. On this day, we will get to know the Ojców National Park - the smallest National Park in Poland. The route has several steep climbs, but the beautiful views compensate for these difficulties in 100%. For the less advanced, I recommend only the upper section of the map, starting from the Prądnik Valley, then left along the yellow trail to Poręba, Sąspów (there we are a bit uphill), then a descent towards Pieskowa Skała, a view of the castle, Mace of Hercules and return to Ojców.
