Pitfalls of multitasking COVER PGSTORY 2&3 02 Wednesday, May 18, 2016 COVER STORY Too distracted? Try monotasking

NYT SYNDICATE

TOP what you’re doing. Well, keep reading. Just stop everything else that you’re doing. Mute your music. Turn off Syour television. Ignore that text mes- sage. While you’re at it, put your phone away entirely. (Unless you’re reading this on your phone. In which case, don’t.) Just read. You are now monotask- ing. Maybe this doesn’t feel like a big deal. Doing one thing at a time isn’t a new idea. Indeed, multitasking, that bulwark of anaemic resumes everywhere, has come under fire in recent years. A 2014 study in the Journal of Experimental Psychology found that interruptions as brief as 2 to 3 seconds — less than the amount of time it would take you to toggle from this article to your email and back again — were enough to dou- ble the number of errors participants made in an assigned task. Earlier research out of Stanford University revealed that self-identified “high media multitaskers” are actually more easily distracted than those who limit their time toggling. So, in layman’s terms, by doing more you’re getting less done. But monotasking, also referred to as 4\S[P[HZRPUN[OH[I\S^HYRVMHUHLTPJYLZ\TLZL]LY`^OLYLOHZJVTL single-tasking or unitasking, isn’t just about getting things done. \UKLYÄYLPUYLJLU[`LHYZ(Z[\K`PU[OL1V\YUHSVM,_WLYPTLU[HS Not the same as mindfulness, which focuses on emotional awareness, 7Z`JOVSVN`MV\UK[OH[PU[LYY\W[PVUZHZIYPLMHZ[VZLJVUKZ·SLZZ monotasking is a 21st-century term for [OHU[OLHTV\U[VM[PTLP[^V\SK[HRL`V\[V[VNNSLMYVT[OPZHY[PJSL[V what your high school English teacher probably just called “paying attention.” `V\YLTHPSHUKIHJRHNHPU·^LYLLUV\NO[VKV\ISL[OLU\TILYVMLY “It’s a digital literacy skill,” said Manoush Zomorodi, host and manag- YVYZWHY[PJPWHU[ZTHKLPUHUHZZPNULK[HZR ing editor of WNYC Studios’ “Note to Self” podcast, which recently offered an interactive series called Infomagical, 03 COVER STORY Wednesday, May 18, 2016

It sounds like ‘monotonous.’” Kelly McGonigal, author of The Will- power Instinct, believes that monotask- ing is “something that needs to be practiced.” She said, “It’s an important ability and a form of self-awareness as opposed to a cognitive limitation.” This is great news for the self-identi- fied monotaskers out there. “When I was looking for jobs and interviewing, they’d always want me to say, ‘I’m a great multitasker,’” said Jon Pack, a 42-year-old photographer in Brooklyn. “And I wouldn’t. My inability to multitask was seen as a negative. Now I can just say, ‘I am a monotask- er.’” And the way we work can have ef- fects that kick in long after we clock out. N innovative way to spend quality time with your children is now within your grasp. The Happy Box, a unique concept that started Aoperations in the United States in 2014, was recently launched in Qatar with two exciting events at the Gate Mall and Lagoona Mall. The Happy Box is quite literally a box full of fun, educational and engaging activities for children in the three to 11 age-bracket. The Happy Box Company, founded by sisters-in-law Jumana and Lina Darwish, offers these activity boxes on a monthly subscription. The activities and craft ideas in the box are designed to help parents bond with children and engage them in educational activities that are also a lot of fun. The motto of the The Happy Boxes The Happy Box launch at Gymboree Play and Music company centres on ‘the little moments of life’. Each box has eight activities and a book surrounding a specific theme. High- quality, non-toxic materials ensure that the child’s safety is not compromised. Luma Abu Hassan, who handles the franchise of the product for Qatar says she is very excited to bring the Happy Box to Qatar. “The news of the launch of the Happy Box has received a good response from the people and we have a lot of orders already. Parents are very happy to use this as a tool to take children away from digital distractions and involve them in creative and educational areas, and chil- dren love the highly interesting activities in the box. It is great to partner Gymbo- ree at the Gate Mall, where the boxes will be sold and orders can be placed,” said Hassan at the launch. Hassan said that there is a theme to the box every month and next month they will be having a special Ramadan box. The launch at the Gate Mall was held at Gymboree Play and Music, where visit- ing children were given free access to its facilities. EVELOPMENTAL biologists have grown human embryos in the lab for up to 13 days after fertilisation, shatter- ing the previous record of nineD days. The achievement has already enabled scientists to discover new aspects of early human development, including features never before seen in a human embryo. And the technique could help to determine why some pregnancies fail. The work, reported in Nature and Nature Cell Biology, also raises the pos- sibility that scientists could soon culture embryos to an even more advanced stage. Doing so would raise ethical, as well as technical, challenges. Many countries and scientific societies ban research on hu- man embryos that are more than 14 days old. In light of this, the authors of the studies ended their experiments before this point. Scientists have understood the earli- est stages of life in many other animals for decades. “It’s really embarrassing at the beginning of the 21st century that we know more about fish and mice and frogs than we know about ourselves,” says Ali Brivanlou, a developmental biologist at the Rockefeller University in and lead author of the study in Na- The teams watched as the cells in the to explore topics such as the development Zernicka-Goetz and Brivanlou doubt ture. “This is a bit difficult to explain to embryos began to differentiate — and of birth defects or the effects of toxic that their embryos would survive much my students.” reveal features that are unique to human compounds. beyond the 14-day mark, because work Magdalena Zernicka-Goetz, a devel- development.
