Introduction This is the third volume of ‘The Book of Prophet Isaiah’, addressing now the chapters56to66.Fromthe56 th chapter, thecontentofprophecyisnolongerdirectedto the returning exiles (though at somemoments it seems to be referring to them), and beginstorevealthecharacterofGodastheonlyLivingGod.He is fearsomeinHis wrath (Isa. 59: 16 et seq., 63: 16), but bends over in kindness toward His people, showingthemmercy,restoringHiscomfortinthemanddelightingin(Isa.60:10; Isa.61:1etseq.;Isa.61:8;19;Isa.66:2;13).Thispartalsoreferstotheglorification ofZion.Zionisnotonlythecapitalof, butisalsothedwellingplaceofGod;and theGentileswhoturntoHimwillshareinHissalvation(Isa.60:3).Itstillalludesto theMessiahinHisroleasRedeemerof.Hiscomingislikeanewcreation(‘new heavens and new earth’ – Isa. 65: 17), preparing the people’s soul for a new dispensationthatwillcometomankind. Sometimeswehavetheimpressionthatfromthe56 th chaptertheprophecyisnot onlyaddressedtothereturningexiles, butseemsthatitisaddressedagaintothepeople whoarestillinIsraelpracticingidolatryandsinofrebellion, atthesametimeinwho speaksmoreintenselyabouttheMessianickingdomtocome.Forexample,inIsa.56:9 12theprophecyisbeingdeliveredtotheJewsstillinthetimeoftheAssyrians,before theBabyloniancaptivity, andshowswhatwouldhappentothemiftheyneglectedthe propheticwarningfromGod.Unbelieftookholdofthepeople, theprophets, thepriests, andthekings.ThegrowingidolatrymovedthemawayfromHim.InIsa.57:1419the prophet continues to speak of idolatry, and the prophecy seems to bedirected to the peoplewhoarestillinIsrael, fortheycouldnotgouptothehillstorenderidolatrous worship, noroffersacrificesundertheterebinthsoroaks, beingincaptivityinaforeign land.Therefore,itispresumedthatallthesepracticeswerebeingperformedinIsrael. IntheJewsfelttheoppressionoftheidolatryofthatland, andtheytriedto adapt to a new way of life and commitment to their God. They tried to revive the traditions of their homeland in the best possible way. The priesthood began to be revived in a new way now: priests dedicated themselves to writing, interpreting historical events from the priestly point of view, preserving the Jewish scrolls and addingotherwritings(priestlyliterature).Thepriestssoughttounitethepeoplearound the wordof God. The Babylonians allowed the Jewish exiles to form families, build theirhouses,plantgardens(Jer.29:57)andconsulttheirownleadersandelders(Ezek. 20:144);thatway,theysetacommunityinthatnation.Inadditiontoagriculture,some Jewsdevotedthemselvestotradeinordertosurvive.Theinstitutionofthesynagogue wasimportantformeetingsofprayer, readingandteachingoftheTorah, thesongsof Psalmsandcommentsofthewritingsoftheprophets.Amongthisgroupofpriestswas theprophetEzekiel, whoexertedagreatinfluenceontheexiles.Aftersometime, dueto the conditions of Persian tolerance and even wellbeing in which the exiles began to live, many became accustomed in that land and did not want to return to , evenwiththepermissionofCyrus. Likewise, the theme‘idolatry’ is repeated in Isa. 59: 915 (practiced there in the land of Israel, not among the wicked of Babylon), and Isa. 65: 17; 1112, probably addressedtotheJewsbeforethecaptivityinBabylon.AndinIsa.66:15,theprophecy seemstobeaddressedtopostexilicJewsfromthetimeofthebuildingofthesecond templetotheJewsofthetimeofChrist’scoming, whenthefearoffallingback into idolatry, and consequently suffering with the wrath of God, led them (especially the priests and teachersof the Law, as it was in the time ofJesus) to the opposite pole, 6 religiosity,wheretheminutiaeoftheLawwereobserved(Matt.23:2324)andwhere thephysicaltemplewasmorevaluedthantheirinnertemple. The Book of Isaiah was written around 700681 BC. It speaks of the double positionofthepeopleofIsraelbeforeGod(especiallyJerusalem, forhewasprophetof thesouthernkingdom),theiraccommodationandlackoftruelovetotheLord.Isaiah worked to give the people the clarity of this hypocrisy in the hopeof changing their attitude. Isaiah(propheticperiod:740681BC)wasaneducatedmanconnectedtothecourt. Like Amos (760750 BC), Isaiah attacks the dominant groups ofsociety: authorities, magistrates (judges), landowners and politicians; also rises against social injustices. IsaiahishardandironicwiththeladiesofthecourtfromtheupperclassofJerusalem (Isa.3:1626;Isa.4:1;Isa.32:914).DuringhisministryfourkingsofJudahreigned: orAzariah(781740 BC,from791BCascorulerofAmaziah),Jotham(740 732BC,from748BCascorulerofUzziah),(732716BC)and(716 687BC,since729BCascoregentofAhaz). According to historical sources (The of Jerusalem) Isaiah was born in 765 BC,sohewas25yearsoldwhenhewascalledbytheLordtobeHisprophet. Isaiah was the first prophet to speak about the coming of the Messiah. It seemed that God had forsaken them, but He was only performing His discipline and punishment upon them for their sins, until they were ready again to reestablish the covenant of faithfulness with Him.
