2 TEMPLE NEWS

From the Rabbi

The next couple of months have some pretty significant holidays: Passover and Purim. Purim begins at sundown on March 11 and Passover begins at sundown on April 10. Did you know that the Passover seder is the most celebrated Jewish event of the year? It makes sense. It includes eating and drinking with family and friends, a great story with a powerful message and the possibility of winning a prize at the end (if you find the afikomen). Amazingly, Purim also has many of these same elements. In fact, on Purim, the eating and drinking are supposed to be a bit more excessive than on Passover. There is even the command on Purim to get a bit drunk, to the point—as the Talmud instructs—when you are not able to tell the difference between the evil Haman and the amazing Mordecai. Also on Purim, there is a fabulous story told in the megillah of Esther, which contains some incredibly relevant and modern messages. It brings up issues that deal with gender roles (Esther is a heroine in a male-dominated society), solidarity with the Jewish people (Esther and Mordecai risk their lives to save the Jewish people) and dealing with evil people (Haman and his family pay the ultimate price for their treachery). Finally, on Purim you can win a prize for the best costume. (I am hoping to win that prize this year at our megillah reading and Wild and Crazy Fun Night!)

As far as celebrating Purim, I hope you will join me on Saturday, March 11. All of the elements that make this holiday great will be shared by kids and adults starting at 6:15 p.m. and then by adults only starting at 7:00 p.m. You will have a great time. Who knows, maybe after you celebrate Purim this year, you too will rank it right up there with the Passover seder!

Purim is a one-day celebration; however, Passover is a seven-day holiday that has several observances that you may be interested in. On Tuesday, April 11, we will hold a first-day festival service at 10:30 a.m. in the sanctuary, and services will conclude with wine and macaroons. At sundown on Sunday, April 16, it is customary to light a yizkor candle in our homes for our loved ones who have passed away. On Monday, April 17, at 10:30 a.m., we hold yizkor services in the sanctuary; services will again conclude with wine and macaroons. Passover will end at sundown on that Monday evening; of course, you are free to eat pizza and bagels at that time. :)

May this holiday season be a good one. May we apply the messages taught to us to our world. May we find the sweetness of life in the traditional foods and in the warmth of family. May you have a happy Purim and a sweet Passover.

Rabbi Todd Chizner, Lauren, Jacob, Jed and Rachel

Message from the President

Spring is the season of rebirth and renewal. This time every year, as the sun begins to warm the earth, the frozen ground softens and plants come to life.

So, it is too at Temple Judea today. Thanks to our new exclusive caterers at Hasson Catering, our building is undergoing an extensive renovation that has generated a buzz in the community. Parties are already fully booked for the late fall as the news spreads about our soon-to-be stunning new space. Special thanks to our house chair, Richard Kashinsky, who has been overseeing the construction and renovation process.

The changes at Temple Judea are not just physical. Now that we live stream many of our services, people are visiting us virtually, including our snowbirds who spend their winters in Florida. Speaking of Florida, on March 22, we will be sending Rabbi Chizner on a mission to reconnect with our current and former members in Boynton Beach, which will be hosted by Estelle Levy and Judit Ungar. Special thanks to Susan Goldklang for making the reunion happen.

We have reimagined our Caring Committee under the leadership of Dr. Michael Wininger. Temple Judea now reaches out in new, more personal ways to our members in times of need. The response from our members has been heartwarming.

On March 11, our membership chairs, Meryl Katz and Stacey Wink, will host Wild & Crazy 2.0, an adults-only celebration of Purim. Those of you who attended the original will want to know that we will be bringing back the game show, the wine and, most importantly, the good company. Please get your RSVPs in so that they can make arrangements for food.

This spring will be a special time for my own family, as we celebrate the Bat Mitzvah of my daughter, Maya.

It is an exciting time for all of us, and I am proud to be a part of the process.

Warm regards,

Erik Groothuis President [email protected]

MESSAGE FROM YOUR SISTERHOOD

As I write this, the daffodils that were peaking up through my mulched beds are now covered with snow. By the time you read this column, they may be in bloom. It reminds me of the Jewish stories that we tell at this time of year. Purim, to me, is a story behind a story, possibly hidden under the snow. Obviously, Jews overcame a political system that was poised to quash its people. Underneath, Purim is about a strong woman who was able to use her head to circumvent existential problems for the Jews of Persia. Similarly, the story of Passover also features strong women who were able to save their people (casting Moses into the river as a baby, “finding” him for the Pharoah’s daughter and raising him as a wet nurse) by their behind the scenes activities. While WRJ Sisterhood may not have such dramatic issues, we work tirelessly to be a strong, supportive force at the temple. This month on Friday, March 31, we are working with Rabbi Chizner on a service entitled Shabbat of Inspiration: Facing Life's Challenges. Originally, we were planning a service to bring attention to those battling breast cancer, but when we saw all the diverse challenges that our temple community faces—from myriad health issues to personal relationships and loss—we wanted to broaden our approach to be more inclusive. We invited Yanni Wattenmaker to speak at the service. While she heads the Breast Cancer Alliance of Connecticut, she also has a broad depth of experience in many social issues, including addiction-recovery support. Since the temple’s Caring Committee does great outreach to those of us going through difficult times, we hope you will honor your loved ones by making a donation in their name for all the fantastic work the Caring Committee does. We invite you to join us to share your story of issues you’ve overcome and what they’ve taught you. We are putting a booklet together of these inspirational tales that you can either submit with a byline or anonymously. To support all our good works, we are holding some fun fundraisers. One that was held last month was a Chinese New Year’s Luncheon at Pearl East that Lauren Chizner organized. We had a blast! The restaurant really went all out with beautiful presentations of typical Lunar New Year fare. Our next dinner in this series will be held at Mara’s Homemade in Syosset on March 27 and will feature Passover dishes. You won’t want to miss it, so sign up soon. By now, you’ve already bought your Purim Packages, another “fun”draiser. We hope you know that this program also benefits Jewish servicemen and women in the U.S. Armed Forces. We send them packages every year and receive wonderful thank-you notes, which we often post in the bulletin and read at services. We also send packages to college students related to Temple Judea members (if you signed up) to keep them connected with their faith in a fun way. Our Rummage Sale will be held on April 2 and 3 this year. Don’t forget to donate your gently used clothing and housewares. We help you clean out your closets, and your donations help those in need at greatly reduced prices. You can also volunteer for this wonderful philanthropic event. Just contact the temple office for more info. Never forget that our Book Club is open to everyone. We’ve read some wonderful contemporary fiction, most recently The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead and Commonwealth by Ann Patchett. Before author Judy Batalion speaks at our temple on Tuesday, April 25, we will read her book White Walls, which tells the story of growing up in a household of hoarders. On the afternoon of her visit, we’ll meet at 1:30 p.m. to discuss her book, and then (lucky us!) get to hear her speak later that night. Come to one or both events. We’d love to have you. This is just some of the work WRJ Sisterhood is conducting right now. Many more spring “bulbs” of programming and fundraising will bloom before the summer is upon us. We’ll keep planting for our temple community—come enjoy the garden. Respectfully, Helen S. Weinstein Sisterhood Bulletin Coordinator

I am honored to be president of Temple Judea's WRJ Sisterhood. I may plant the seed regarding an event or program I would like our Sisterhood to participate in, but our members are the force behind seeing these ideas coming to fruition. The dedicated women of WRJ Sisterhood come together to plan and implement our many diverse programs and events. I am inspired by the strength and integrity of these women and their commitment to WRJ Sisterhood and Temple Judea. Please join us, learn about WRJ Sisterhood and plan to attend one of our monthly meetings and our many functions. Warmest regards, Phyllis Wininger WRJ Sisterhood President

Dear Temple Judea Family,

WRJ Sisterhood invites you to our Service, Shabbat of Inspiration: Learning from Life's Challenges, on Friday, March 31, at 7:30 p.m. WRJ Sisterhood wants to honor members of our Temple Judea family who are facing or have faced life challenges and celebrate their strength and perseverance. From illnesses to difficult relationships to losses, we stand together as a synagogue to support and learn from one another.

We invite you to share your story on this Shabbat. In one or two paragraphs, please write what you have learned from your life challenge. For example, complete the sentence: As I faced my challenge, I learned this about myself… or about life… Or: When reflecting on what I went through, I learned that I possess these blessings… We would like to compile a booklet and distribute it to those who attend this service. Your story can be submitted anonymously, if you prefer. Please email your story to me by March 15 at [email protected].

In addition, we are honored to welcome Yonni Wattenmaker, executive director of the Breast Cancer Alliance, as our guest speaker. Yonni will share the life-inspiring lessons she has learned from working with those who have been affected by breast cancer.

No one faces his or her challenges alone. Temple Judea, through our Caring Committee, supports the needs of our congregants during difficult times, through phone calls or visits from the clergy, caring packages, cards and letters. WRJ Sisterhood is committed to helping our temple and supporting the Caring Committee. For this Shabbat, we are hoping you will honor your loved ones by making a donation in their name. All contributions will go towards sustaining the work of our Caring Committee.

Please RSVP to the temple at 516-621-8049.

9 BROTHERHOOD NEWS

At the time I am writing this, we are only a few days away from our blood drive, scheduled for February 26. I was very happy when Rabbi Chizner put me in touch with his nephew, Richie Portnoy. Richie had put the blood drive together entirely on his own. Brotherhood became involved after Richie arranged the date and coordinated with the New York Blood Center to ensure a successful event. And, if that wasn’t enough, he recruited a small army of donors. All Brotherhood had to do was promote the event and add more donors to make the event an even bigger success. In short, we had the easy job.

I can't say enough about the dedication and work it takes to have a successful event. Anything is possible when people come together, especially when it’s to work for a worthy common cause. The blood drive is only one example of what can be accomplished when we pull together. This is what Brotherhood means to me. Our Brotherhood is not just about getting together. We are about getting things, important things, done. Blood donations save lives and we should all be proud that Temple Judea and its Brotherhood are part of this event. With that said, I want to thank Rabbi Chizner and Richie Portnoy for getting me—and Brotherhood—involved.

The blood drive started as an idea. I am always eager to learn about new ideas. Please share yours with Brotherhood. I am happy to hear from any temple member who has an idea for a Brotherhood event. Please feel free to contact me at [email protected] and let me know your suggestions.

Mark Keller Brotherhood President

ADOPT-A-FAMILY

I am happy to announce that on behalf of the Social Action Committee, the Adopt-A-Family program has adopted a new family. They are a wonderful family who is challenged with a mother’s illness and a father’s physical disability. They have young twins, who are delightful to speak with.

Our program provides a monthly grocery shopping of food and other items that the family needs. I am in contact with them on a monthly basis to deliver the groceries and see how they are all doing. With the donations we have received, the items we purchase give a family in need some extra help during very hard times. If anyone is interested in becoming a shopper, please contact me and I will happily put you in our shopping rotation.

Thank you all for supporting this wonderful program.

Sincerely, Tami Goodman [email protected]

14 SOCIAL ACTION NEWS

ADOPT-A-FAMILY Exciting News! Temple Judea has a new Adopt-A-Family! Thanks to the efforts of Tami Goodman, we are now helping a new Jewish family in need of our support. Sadly, the mom, who is in her early 40s, has early onset Alzheimer’s disease and the dad is physically disabled. They have 11-year-old twins. Our monthly grocery shopping, and birthday and holiday gifts, will be very much appreciated. If you would like to be one of the shoppers for the family, please contact the office. And, if you want to make a contribution to the program, please send a check to Temple Judea with Adopt-A-Family in the memo.

PACK IT UP FOR PURIM FOOD DRIVE—A GREAT FAMILY ACTIVITY On Sunday, March 5, at 1 p.m., Temple Judea congregants will join members of other North Shore synagogues and JCCs at the Sid Jacobson Jewish Community Center for a group mitzvah. Led by TANS, a consortium of social action chair people, we will pack up food for the Hatzilu Kosher Pantry in Baldwin. Temple Judea was responsible for donating at least 100 cans of tuna—and we exceeded that number! You must preregister to participate. Contact Alicia Munves at 516-627-5998 or Rita Marcus at [email protected].

What else can we do to help the hungry? As part of an ongoing effort to feed the hungry right here in Nassau County, there is a food donation basket in the lobby of our synagogue. We urge you to bring in an item (or two or three) of nonperishable food whenever you come to Temple Judea. Please make this a habit—you can do so much good!

And, many organizations also take perishable foods. Don't let your leftovers go to waste! Do you have extra food from a celebration or untouched food from a house of mourning? These leftovers can feed families! See the following page in this bulletin for Food Recovery Locations, which lists the names of organizations where you can deliver the food. Call Alicia at 516-627-5998 or email Rita at [email protected] for additional information.

A PASSOVER PROJECT Please join the Social Action Committee on Tuesday, March 28, as we participate in Project Ezra, filling cartons with Passover food to feed needy New Yorkers on the Lower East Side. Shopping lists will be provided as the date gets closer.

PROM DRESS DRIVE It’s an annual tradition. Every year we say, “Every girl deserves to feel beautiful at her prom!” This spring, Temple Judea will once again participate in a project to help disadvantaged Long Island teenage girls attend their high school proms. We need your gently used—and still gorgeous—formal dresses, along with shoes, bags and costume jewelry. Go through your own closet—and your daughter's wardrobe. Last year, our congregants were extremely generous and the clothing was distributed at a very festive “shopping event” at a local college.

16 HOLOCAUST RESOURCE CENTER UPDATE

Remember the past.

Heed the present.

Insure the future.

As I write this article, it is still two weeks before Purim. So, why am I already thinking about Yom Hashoah? It’s because I just got off the phone with a rabbi in Queens about giving a Yom Hashoah address to a combined group of five congregations. During our conversation, he asked me what I thought would be an appropriate topic and message for this year’s commemoration.

When I hung up the phone, three topics crowded my mind:

• The Shoah, the past, the word zachor (remember);

• Global anti-Semitism of today; and

• The future of our people and the State of Israel.

From the past, we learn how an educated and intellectual society was transformed; how ordinary moral, God-fearing, church-going human beings became murderers.

The Shoah did not happen at once. The atrocities did not happen in a moment. It was a step-by-step process. It was introduced gradually, along with an active and passive support by society. It began with a failure to react to derision and humiliation. Later came the denial of rights and segregation. In the end, the Jews were not only dispensable, but were a hindrance to normal life and thus annihilation was an appropriate response.

The Shoah also had a foundation upon which to create a narrative that was based on some preconceived ideas, myths and lies. Centuries of religious accusations and cultural lies forced upon the Jews was the foundation upon which the Nazi Party built the case against the Jews and transformed society.

One of the messages of the Shoah is that it is necessary to react at the first sign of the destructive process, rather than when it is too late.

As we examine the news of today and compare it to the foundation and action of yesterday, we see by words and behavior in different parts of the world that we are experiencing multiple attacks on the Jewish people.

The BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) movement continues to be promoted in many parts of the world. Its objective is clear: the destruction of the economy of Israel.

The accusation of Israel of being an Apartheid State and an illegal entity, a complete fabrication, is becoming a mantra not only by the Islamic world, but has entered the vocabulary of the American college system.

The desecration of Jewish cemeteries in the heart of America and the constant threat to Jewish institutions is not an isolated or random incident, but a concerted effort to foster anti-Semitism.

The resolution of the UN Women’s Rights Conference that Israel is the only country in the world that oppresses women while Saudi Arabia and other Muslim countries and dictatorships are not mentioned, is part of the hatred and persecution of the Jewish State by the UN.

All these actions are a clear indication that the attitudes and acts in many parts of the world—and by many organizations—have much in common: the persecution of the Jewish people. We must recognize the evil that is being propagated against us and unite.
