Check out the visitor comments for this exquisite cottage on the shores of the Moray Firth. A 4 star award well earned. This self-catering Black Isle cottage has an enviable location in the peaceful waterside hamlet of Kilmuir. Far removed from the main roads, peace and tranquility are assured - yet you can be in the bustling Highland capital of Inverness in 10 minutes. The airport is just 20 minutes away. Kilmuir lies in the southern part of the Black Isle. The village is not far from Inverness, but it is fairly secluded as it is placed at the end of a narrow single track road. It lies on the northern shore of the Moray Firth and east of the Kessock Bridge, below Ord Hill, at the top of which lies an ancient fort. There are excellent walks to the top of Ord Hill which gives panoramic views west down the Great Glen, south to the Cairngorms and east out towards the North Sea. The resident Moray Firth dolphins travel up the stretch of water in front of the cottage as they pass through to feeding grounds in the Beauly Firth. Further east on the Black Isle is the famous Chanonry Point viewing point where the best and closest views of the dolphins are achieved. The local community owns woodland behind the village and on the slopes of Ord Hill. If you park your car near the churchyard there are marked walks from there to the village, to North Kessock, and circular routes following the coast towards Munlochy Bay. The Black Isle has many attractions for visitors and the various villages each have their own character - but all offer excellent dining out opportunities! Mountain biking at Eathie is both challenging and rewarding as is sailing and kayaking from Fortrose. There are fishing and dolphin watching trips from Cromarty and Avoch (pronounced 'och') nearby. The maintenance activities are broken down into ‘scheme’ and ‘cyclic maintenance’. ‘Scheme’ represents those works that will be required over the next 5 years, whilst ‘cyclic maintenance’ represents those works which may be required over the same timeframe. Inspections will also be carried out to identify the degree of maintenance activity required. Following review of detailed bathymetric data obtained in August 2018, BEAR Scotland now anticipate that scour repairs at Kessock Bridge are unlikely to be required within the next 5 five years; hence, this activity is considered cyclic maintenance. The original character assessment reports, part of a series of 30, mostly for a local authority area, included a “Background Chapter” on the formation of the landscape. These documents have been revised because feedback said they are useful, despite the fact that other sources of information are now readily available on the internet, unlike in the 1990’s when the first versions were produced. The content of the chapters varied considerably between the reports, and it has been restructured into a more standard format: Introduction, Physical Influences and Human Influences for all areas; and Cultural Influences sections for the majority. Some content variation still remains as the documents have been revised rather than rewritten, The information has been updated with input from the relevant Local Authorities. The historic and cultural aspects have been reviewed and updated by Historic Environment Scotland. Gaps in information have been filled where possible.

    Walking the Great Glen East to West We have been running our cruises with activities since 1996 and have been walking the Great Glen for most of that time. The Glen traverses the Highlands of Scotland from coast to coast joining the Atlantic in the west to the North Sea in the east. The western end reaches the sea in spectacular mountainous country at Loch Linnhe, near Fort William and close to Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the UK. The eastern end is in Inverness, the beautiful capital of the Highlands, and via the Moray Firth links to the North Sea. The total distance from coast to coast is 78 miles, which we spread between 5 full days and 2 part days. Ours barges make the ideal base for this trip. Your home for the week is also your back up vehicle, cruising with you so you don’t even have to pack and unpack each day, let alone carry your gear! Our friendly guide leads walks and will point out places of interest along the way. On the Walk the Great Glen weeks the barge stops are planned to suit the walking stages, breaking them into manageable day walks of between 10 and 15 miles. Other options are available for interesting detours or hill walks for the more energetic. It is an ideal holiday for a party with different holiday needs and for anyone not wishing to walk the whole way as there are always other great shorter walk options available.
