'Nothing but the Truth': Genre, Gender and Knowledge in the US
‘Nothing but the Truth’: Genre, Gender and Knowledge in the US Television Crime Drama 2005-2010 Hannah Ellison Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) University of East Anglia School of Film, Television and Media Studies Submitted January 2014 ©This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that no quotation from the thesis, nor any information derived therefrom, may be published without the author's prior, written consent. 2 | Page Hannah Ellison Abstract Over the five year period 2005-2010 the crime drama became one of the most produced genres on American prime-time television and also one of the most routinely ignored academically. This particular cyclical genre influx was notable for the resurgence and reformulating of the amateur sleuth; this time remerging as the gifted police consultant, a figure capable of insights that the police could not manage. I term these new shows ‘consultant procedurals’. Consequently, the genre moved away from dealing with the ills of society and instead focused on the mystery of crime. Refocusing the genre gave rise to new issues. Questions are raised about how knowledge is gained and who has the right to it. With the individual consultant spearheading criminal investigation, without official standing, the genre is re-inflected with issues around legitimacy and power. The genre also reengages with age-old questions about the role gender plays in the performance of investigation. With the aim of answering these questions one of the jobs of this thesis is to find a way of analysing genre that accounts for both its larger cyclical, shifting nature and its simultaneously rigid construction of particular conventions. -
Read John Berlinski's American Lawyer Trailblazer Profile
2021 THE AMERICAN LAWYER WEST WINNER’S NAME HERE | COMPANY NAME John Berlinski Kasowitz Benson Torres What was the genesis of the path that has made you a trailblazer? After successfully defending numerous profit participation disputes as Senior Vice President, Head of West Coast Television Litigation for NBCUniversal, I was approached by representatives of the talent who brought those claims and asked to “switch sides” and represent their clients against other major Holly- wood studios. Shortly thereafter, I left to launch Kasowitz’s entertainment practice with the goal of leveling the playing field against the bigger and better financed studios. What sort of change has resulted from the concept? : We have succeeded in shining the light on the historically opaque practice of “Hollywood Accounting,” resulting in more favorable outcomes for our clients obtained through arbitration, litigation, and informal settlements. While most of these matters are confidential, it is public knowledge that we secured a landmark $179 million arbitration award—the largest ever issued in a profit participation dispute—for actors Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz, and producer Kathleen Reichs in connection with their profit participation interests in the television series “Bones”. Studios have responded to that and our other successes by starting to replace profit participation deals with less valuable series bonuses in which talent earns a bonus when a series meets benchmarks such as completing a certain number of seasons. What bearing will this have on the future?: Recently, the “streaming wars” involving Netflix, Disney+, HBOMax, and others have created significant demand for premium content, including content involving legacy profit participants. -

The Mighty Macs She Dared to DREAM, They Dared to BELIEVE!
The Mighty Macs She Dared to DREAM, they Dared to BELIEVE! The Mighty Macs is the very inspiring movie based on the true events that happened in the early 1970’s at Immaculata College. The movie is a Cinderella type story about how a women’s basketball team with no funds, no gym, very few players and a brand new coach stand together and fight for what they believe in, their dream! The film is funny, touching and a great family drama with lots of action and encouragement for all ages. The movie is very entertaining and the production is first class, but the story of Coach Cathy Rush and the original team is amazing. The Mighty Macs movie is the story of a young and newly married coach Cathy Rush, played by Carla Gugino (Son-in-Law, Night at the Museum), who most think should stay at home and raise children, but she wants to coach. Her husband Ed Rush, played by David Boreanaz (Bones, Buffy the Vampire Slayer), struggles with her decision, but tries to understand as he is a professional referee in the NBA. Cathy finds a college willing to hire her, the tiny girls Catholic Immaculata College in Philadelphia with less than 500 students. The college has no gym due to a fire, not many of the girls want or know how to play basketball, and there are no funds for uniforms or even basketballs. So with only one basketball and a desire they set out on the adventure of a lifetime, to win the first ever Women’s Basketball Championship! With the help of feisty Sister Sunday, played by Marley Shelton (Grand Canyon, Never Been Kissed), and encouragement from the nun cheerleaders the team starts to come together. -
