15 September 2019 Davis Cup Group I and Group II Results the ITF Has
15 September 2019 Davis Cup Group I and Group II results The ITF has announced the results from the Davis Cup Group I and Group II ties taking place on 13-15 September. Nineteen ties took place this weekend. The 12 Group I winning nations will contest the Davis Cup by Rakuten Qualifiers on March 2020, while the losers will play in the new World Group I Play-offs alongside the 12 winners of Group II ties. The weekend’s results mean that, to date, 10 nations – Austria, Belarus, Brazil, Czech Republic, Ecuador, Korea Republic, Slovakia, Sweden, Uruguay and Uzbekistan – have secured a place in March’s Qualifiers. Hungary’s Europe/Africa Group I tie with Ukraine was suspended due to bad light with Attila Balazs of Hungary leading Ilya Marchenko 64 5-5 in the decisive fifth match. The tie will be completed on Monday. The remaining Group I tie between Pakistan and India is scheduled to take place in November. Meanwhile, eight Group II ties were completed this weekend, with Bolivia, Chinese Taipei, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Slovenia, South Africa and Turkey all securing a place in next year’s World Group I Play- offs. In addition to the Group I and Group II ties, three regional group events were held this week, with all three concluding on Saturday. In Europe Group III four teams (Estonia, Greece, Latvia and Poland) have gained promotion to March’s World Group II Play-offs, where they will be joined by Kenya and Tunisia, who were victorious in Africa Group III. In Asia/Oceania Group IV, Jordan and Pacific Oceania won promotion to Group III. -

Serbia (A), Great Britain (C), Russia (D) and Australia (F) have already qualified for the quarter-finals to be held on Thursday and Friday at Ken Rosewall Arena in Sydney. Nine nations remain in contention for the four vacancies, with Groups B and E to be decided on Wednesday. • The winner of Group B will be determined in Perth when Spain (2-0) meets Japan (2-0). Team Japan’s No. 1 singles player, World No. 72 Yoshihito Nishioka, is ranked lower than all five players on the Spanish roster. He seeks the biggest win of his career against World No. 1 Rafael Nadal. Nishioka dropped just six games against Nikoloz Basilashvili and Pablo Cuevas earlier this week, while Nadal lost 11 games to the same opponents. • Croatia (2-0), Austria (1-1) and Argentina (1-1) are in contention to win Group E in Sydney. Croatia will claim the group by beating Argentina. If Argentina defeats Croatia and Poland defeats Austria, the Argentines will win the group. -

Depending on the result of Germany vs. Greece, the Aussies or Canadians could qualify for the quarter- finals with a win. If Australia and Germany win, the Aussies will book their place 9-12 January in Sydney. If Canada and Greece win, the Canadians will secure a berth among the ‘Elite Eight’ of the 2020 ATP Cup. • Four of the ATP Tour’s brightest starts will feature in Australia vs. Canada. Nick Kyrgios, 24, opens against Felix Auger-Aliassime, 19, before 20-year-olds Alex de Minaur and Denis Shapovalov go head-to-head. • Born less than two months apart in 1999, de Minaur and Shapovalov met in the 2016 Wimbledon boys’ singles final. Shapovalov rallied from a set down to defeat de Minaur for the title. The Aussie avenged that loss during the Davis Cup Finals last November, beating Shapovalov in a quarter-final tie that Canada went on to win 2-1. • Shapovalov has risen from No. 38 to a career-high No. 15 in the FedEx ATP Rankings after hiring former No. 8 Mikhail Youzhny as his coach last August. -

It has been my privilege to be President of Tennis Ireland for the last year. It has been a very exciting and productive year to be involved in Tennis in Ireland and this annual review showcases the work that has been delivered throughout the country. I have many highlights from the past year. I have visited over ninety clubs, large and small in all 4 provinces and the reception I have received was, without exception, fantastic. I am always delighted, but never surprised to see the great work that takes place in our clubs and Provincial Branches and the funding received via the Sports Capital Programme this year is clear recognition of the contribution that Tennis makes to communities throughout Ireland. -
