Welter All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Rebecca Mancuso, Advisor The American Civil War was the first modern war. It was fought with weapons capable of dealing death on a scale never before seen. It was also the first war which saw the widespread use of the railroad. Across the country men, materials, and supplies were transported along the iron rails which industrial revolution swept in. Without the railroads, the Union would have been unable to win the war. All of the resources, men, and materials available to the North mean little when they cannot be shipped across the great expanse which was the North during the Civil War. The goals of this thesis are to examine the roles and issues faced by seemingly independent people in very different situations during the war, and to investigate how the problems which these people encountered were overcome. The first chapter, centered in Ohio, gives insight into the roles which noncombatants played in the process. Farmers, bakers, and others behind the lines. Chapter two covers the journey across the rails, the challenges faced, and how they were overcome. This chapter looks at how those in command handled the railroad, how it affected the battles, especially Gettysburg, and how the railroads were defended over the course of the war, something which had never before needed to be considered. -

A Brief History of the United States Trade Representative Office “Winder Building” 600 17th Street NW Washington, DC 20006 Compiled by the American Battlefield Trust Education Department Updated October 2019 www.battlefields.org P a g e | 1 Dubbed the first “skyscraper” of Washington DC, the headquarters of the Office of the Unites States Trade Representative, also known as the “Winder Building,” has had a long and storied lifespan. The concept for the Winder Building came from William H. Winder, who was named for, and was the son of, General William H. Winder.1 General Winder was a native of Maryland’s Eastern Shore, and served at the Battle of Bladensburg and the defense of Baltimore, during the War of 1812.2 The younger Winder decided to try his hand at building speculation in Washington DC. He was convinced that the United States Government was making a mistake by not undertaking the construction of fireproof buildings. Therefore, Winder decided to take a more roundabout way of forcing the government’s hand. Knowing that the ever-expanding Federal government would need more office space, he hired renowned South Carolina architect Robert Mills to construct his new building, which Winder would then look to lease or sell outright to the government. If all else failed, Winder would turn the spacious new building into a hotel. Robert Mills boasted a stellar resume. He served as the “architect of the federal buildings,” and while “architect,” he designed the Department of the Treasury Building, United States Patent Office Building (today the National Portrait Gallery), and the General Post Office. -

The desk’s first and last occupants were Kentucky natives and civil servants, and its current resting place is in Western Kentucky University’s Kentucky Museum. -

Cabin John History
Cabin John History Building a Community The Early Years As a recognized place, Cabin John emerged only in the 19th century but of course there were inhabitants long before then. When the first European explorers appeared in the early 17th century, the Native Americans living in the area were the Susquehannahs. Later the Piscataways, and still later, the Senecas occupied the land. School on Macadam Road, Tract No. 2 circa 1912- http://glenecho-cabinjohn.com/CJ-02.htlm By the middle of the 17th century, Maryland was becoming a settled colony, and Lord Baltimore, proprietor of the colony, was making land grants along the Potomac River. Several of these grants embraced what is now Cabin John. During the 18th century, farming predominated, particularly of tobacco. In the 19th century, the building of the C & O Canal in the 1820's and 1830's brought settlers to the Cabin John area, and the population further increased with the construction of the Washington Aqueduct in the 1850's and 1860's. Land ownership remained concentrated, however, and at the end of the century, three families owned virtually all the property in today's Cabin John. Cabin John Takes Shape In 1912 the American Land Company, represented by J. S. Tomlinson, bought up a large tract of land in Cabin John, divided it into residential lots, and began a vigorous sales campaign of what it called Cabin John Park. Although many of the new owners built houses for summer occupancy only, the town's year-round population grew steadily and a sense of community began to appear. -

Other Significant Stone Arch Bridges Other known stone arch bridges constructed in Maryland include a variety of structures built for the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal during the nineteenth century, and a singularly significant Roman arch, the Cabin John Aqueduct (Union Bridge), built between 1857 and 1864 by the federal government for the Washington, D.C., water system. In different ways, these structures display the traditional characteristics of stone arch bridge construction, adapted to meet the challenge of a large, engineered public works project. To carry streams under the canal bed, more than 200 stone arch culverts were built along the right-of-way of the C&O Canal, between 1828 and its 1924 closing. While most such culverts were at right angles to the canal, a minority of such culverts were constructed at a skew angle to the canal bed, which required an innovative rifled construction of the arch rings comprising the barrel of the arch. Built in 1832, Culvert 65, documented as HAER No. MD-32, is an example of the skewed construction of C&O canal culverts. The canal also required larger aqueducts at river and major creek crossings; these, too, were arch structures supporting the canal itself above the river or stream (Sanderlin 1964). In Washington County alone, C&O engineers built five notable aqueducts between 1832 and 1840 (Mish and Cottingham 1977). Two of the most notable were the Conococheague Aqueduct at Williamsport, a three-span arch structure with piers on rounded footings and crowned at the parapet with decorative capitals, and the Licking Creek Aqueduct, featuring only one arch but with a total structure length of over 120 feet.
