For as long as I can remember people have suggested that I write a book, citing both my exploits in Rock and Roll from 1973-1988 and my story telling abilities. After all, with my position as staff photographer on the NME and later The Face and Arena, I collected pop stars like others collected stamps, I was not happy until I had photographed everyone who interested me. However, given that the access I had to my friends and clients was often unlimited and 24/7 I did not feel it was fair to them that I should write it all down. I refused all offers. Then in 2010 I was approached by the National Museum of Wales, they wanted to put on a retrospective of my work, this gave me a special opportunity. In 1988 I gave up Rock and Roll, I no longer enjoyed the music and, quite simply, too many of my friends had died, I feared I might be next. So I put all of my negatives into storage at a friends Studio and decided that maybe 25 years later the images you see here might be of some cultural significance, that they might be seen as more than just pictures of Rock Stars, Pop Bands and Punks. Each bell is a metal tube, 30–38 mm (1¼–1½ inches) in diameter, tuned by altering its length. Its standard range is from C4-F5, though many professional instruments reach G5 (see photo). Tubular bells are often replaced by studio chimes, which are a smaller and usually less expensive instrument. Studio chimes are similar in appearance to tubular bells, but each bell has a smaller diameter than the corresponding bell on tubular bells. Tubular bells are sometimes struck on the top edge of the tube with a rawhide- or plastic-headed hammer. Often, a sustain pedal will be attached to allow extended ringing of the bells.     Hergest Ridge, Herefordshire – a Lenten journey Mike Oldfield's second album 'Hergest Ridge', released in 1974, features a bird's eye view of the Ridge on the cover; his 1975 album 'Ommadawn' was recorded at his house, The Beacon, which overlooks Hergest Ridge. Hergest Ridge is a place I’ve been aware of most of my life through its musical associations with Mike Oldfield, the composer of Tubular Bells - but until this year (2011) I had never visited it. Oldfield, who shot to fame in 1973 with his album 'Tubular Bells', named his follow-up album after the Ridge; and while living at The Beacon he recorded his third album, Ommadawn. A track on that album ‘On Horseback’ recalls the times when he and his friends rode over the Hergest Hills. Martin on Hergest Ridge, Ash Wednesday, 2011. Hergest Ridge is in Herefordshire, on the border with Radnorshire in Wales. Apart from the nearby town of Kington (where Revd Stephen Buckley of All Saints’ used to have a holiday cottage), the area around is mainly agricultural and the ridge was indeed cultivated during the Second World War to assist in food production. Later returned to its former status as common land, it is treeless, covered with heather and bracken. Around two miles wide and traversed by the Offa’s Dyke footpath that runs 174 miles from North to South Wales along the English- Welsh border, it has always been popular with walkers. The day of my visit was 9th March 2011, Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, and I attended the Morning Holy Communion service with imposition of ashes at All Saints’ Church in Sedgley.

    The Final Hour Article by the composer July 2019 The composer Having studied composition with Broadstock and Conyngham at the University of Melbourne, Stuart Greenbaum holds a position at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music as Professor and Head of Composition. He is the author of over 200 works including 15 sonatas, 7 string quartets, 5 piano trios, 5 concertos, 4 symphonies and 2 operas. Words and music Stuart Greenbaum and Ross Baglin have been working together since 1985 when they met in Doncaster, Melbourne. It was night and raining heavily. Stuart auditioned to join Ross’s band, The Front. They never performed live, but wrote a lot of pop songs. And two operas (Nelson and The Parrot Factory), a dozen choral works and numerous art songs. Their major choral works include The Foundling, commissioned by Cantori New York in 1997 and From the Beginning commissioned for the sesquicentenary of the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic in 2003. Concept Albums I have always been drawn to the idea of concept albums. Four that have been notably influential for me are Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon (1973), Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells (1973), Jean-Michel Jarre’s Oxygene (1976) and Pat Metheny Group’s The Way Up (2005). The overlapping tracks and unifying themes intensify the cumulative experience. For many years I had this idea of making a ‘concept album’. It’s hard to use the term ‘album’ without also thinking ‘vinyl’. But it wasn’t 33 revolutions per–minute that that was playing on my mind. And neither necessarily was the term ‘concept’ – shouldn’t that be a given for any work of art? Rightly or not, the concept album is a relatively specific genre.

Avete in testa un’idea innovativa per un disco tutto vostro, ma nessuno è interessato a ciò che proponete; poi, dopo tanti rifiuti, riuscite a convincere Richard Branson, proprietario della neonata Virgin, a produrlo. E quando finalmente questo album viene pubblicato diventa un grandissimo successo, talmente strepitoso da far conoscere il vostro nome in tutto il mondo. Ma attenzione: non siete considerato solo l’ennesimo autore sconosciuto catapultato in cima alle classifiche di vendita. No, il pubblico e la critica musicale vedono in voi il segno del predestinato, considerandovi un prodigio del rock. Ecco, se tutto ciò capitasse a voi cosa avreste fatto? Poiché le risposte potrebbero essere molteplici, vi dico subito cosa ha fatto Mike Oldfield dopo aver composto, suonato e prodotto Tubular bells: per tutta la vita ha provato a ripetere quell’esordio, così ossessionato dal suo grande capolavoro da riproporlo in ogni forma e ad ogni occasione, fino a raggiungere e superare la linea che separa passione da eccesso. Poiché non ho competenze specifiche in campo psicologico, non posso inoltrarmi in complesse analisi sul rapporto tra l’artista e la sua opera più conosciuta; certo è che tutta la carriera musicale di Oldfield è stata un continuo confrontarsi con quella sua prima composizione.
