From the lo-fi, sparse folk- melancholy of her 2010 EP, Strange Cacti, to the electrified, polished rock 'n' roll bursting from 2016's beloved and acclaimed My Woman, Olsen has refused to succumb to a single genre, expectation, or vision. Singing her precise, often revelatory, lyrics with a warbling wild voice that blends Dolly Parton and Patti Smith, Olsen swirls sun-kissed dream pop and brooding garage rock into something whole, impressionistic, and new. “Knockout vocals, driving guitars, and a killer sense of humor that makes no apologies.” — NPR Olsen first received wide critical praise for her 2014 folk- rock opus Burn Your Fire for No Witness. Her follow-up, My Woman, was one of 2016's most universally extolled albums and catapulted the already revered songwriter into a larger spotlight. The record made regular appearances on year-end Top 10 lists in Pitchfork, Time, American Songwriter, Esquire, Newsweek, among others. A super intimate and vulnerable emotional portrait that shows her grappling with a period of personal tumult, Whole New Mess presents Olsen working through her open wounds and raw nerves with just a few guitars and some microphones, isolated in a century-old church in the Pacific Northwest. Whole New Mess f ollows All Mirrors, Olsen’s grand 2019 masterpiece (and a top 10 critically ac- claimed record). At least nine of the eleven songs on Whole New Mess should sound familiar to anyone who has heard All Mirrors. “Lark,” “Summer,” “Chance”—they are all here, at least in some skeletal form and with slightly different titles. But these are not the demos for All Mirrors. Instead, Whole New Mess is its own record with its own immovable mood. If the lavish orchestral arrange- ments and cinematic scope of All Mirrors are the sound of Olsen preparing her scars for the wider world to see, Whole New Mess is the sound of her first figuring out their shape, making sense for herself of these injuries. To record Whole New Mess, Olsen asked for a studio recommendation from Electro-Vox head en- gineer and a deep kindred spirit Michael Harris. She wanted to find a space where, as she puts it, “vulnerability exists.” They settled on The Unknown, the Catholic church that Mount Eerie’s Phil Elverum and producer Nicholas Wilbur converted into a recording studio in the small town of Ana- cortes, Washington.

Angel Olsen” HERE Photo Credit: Cameron McCool Angel Olsen and Mark Ronson have collaborated on “True Blue,” a standout number from Ronson’s album, Late Night Feelings, out today. Over a punchy beat and rumbling bass line, Olsen’s striking vocals carry the song as she describes a bittersweet ending to an intense relationship: “fucking around // havin’ fallen in love // saying goodbye // cause you’re giving it up // all that you were // all that you lost // whoever thought it came with a cost?” before eventually blending into swirling reverb and synth. “I wasn’t sure what it would be like to work with Mark, considering we are both from different production worlds..but it was such a fun, organic experience for me. Seriously,” says Olsen. “He gave me full reign to try things out - I even play a little guitar on the track (not that I’m a virtuoso player or anything). At the time I’d been listening to a lot of dark disco, specifically Nicos dance version of Heroes. I wanted to make something dark like that but also something people could skate to. A true roller rink song. Hearing the final track back was so rewarding for me. I can’t say it enough. I hope to play it live! I’m excited to hear the record in its entirety." As previously announced, Olsen will tour North America this fall.

Times did not appear to be good in Killers-ville. Singer Brandon Flowers even openly questioned their relevance in interviews, rhetorically asking in Billboard, “Well, what kind of mark have I left?” Who wanted that kind of defeatism from, of all bands, The Killers? Flowers once sang about burning down the highway skyline on the back of a damn hurricane! And now he was droning on about sailing ships and blue hearts? What is the point of this band if they aren’t playing the arrogant and indestructible arena-rockers? Well, we’re happy to report The Killers have recovered their mojo.
