June 6, 2016 Angel Olsen Announces MY WOMAN June 6, 2016 For Immediate Release Angel Olsen Announces MY WOMAN, New Album Out September 2nd On Jagjaguwar, And North American/European Tours Listen To “Intern” And Watch The Trailer http://sptfy.com/angelolsen https://youtu.be/r248o_rUfKE (Angel Olsen by Amanda Marsalis) Angel Olsen returns with MY WOMAN, her new album in which she continues to reign over the land between pop personality and elliptical outsider with haunting obliqueness and sophisticated grace. Teased last week with the “Intern” Trailer, MY WOMAN, follows the release of Burn Your Fire for No Witness, one of the most praised albums of 2014, and is out September 2nd on Jagjaguwar. The Angel Olsen six-piece band will tour extensively in support of MY WOMAN throughout North America and Europe beginning in September. On previous releases, Olsen has presented reverb-shrouded poetic swoons, shadowy folk, grunge-pop band workouts and haunting, finger-picked epics. MY WOMAN is an exhilarating complement to her past work, and one for which Olsen recalibrated her writing/recording approach and methods to enter a new music-making phase. The album is put together as a proper A-side and a B-side, featuring the punchier, more pop/rock-oriented songs up front, and the longer, more reflective tracks towards the end. And because these new songs demanded a plurality of voices, Olsen sings in a much broader range of styles - - her disarming, timeless voice is even more front-and-center than before. Olsen wrote some songs on a piano, but later switched it out for synth and/or Mellotron (as on the aforementioned “Intern”). She worked with producer Justin Raisen (Charli XCX, Sky Ferreira, Santigold) and also opted to record live to tape at LA’s historic Vox Studios, bringing in guest guitarist Seth Kauffman to augment her regular band of bass player Emily Elhaj, drummer Joshua Jaeger and guitarist Stewart Bronaugh. Given its title, and track names like “Sister” and “Woman,” it would be easy to read a gender-specific message into MY WOMAN, but Olsen has never played her lyrical content straight. She says the album isn’t necessarily a feminist manifesto, but it does sometimes deal with themes surrounding “the complicated mess of being a woman.” She continues, “I’m definitely using scenes that I’ve replayed in my head, in the same way that I might write a script and manipulate a memory to get it to fit. But I think it’s important that people can interpret things the way that they want to.” Angel Olsen’s MY WOMAN is available for pre-order now. Are you someone who grew up watching a lot of music videos? My first memories as a human being are specifically watching music videos in my parents’ garage. I remember the Warrant “Cherry Pie” video stuck out to me when I was four of five years old, and then Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun” video and Soul Asylum’s “Runaway Train” video. When I was a little bit older I was introduced to Mark Romanek’s Nine Inch Nails videos as well as Chris Cunningham’s work. Music videos, for sure, influenced me when I was younger, but I never thought I’d grow up and direct music videos. If I had seen a psychic years ago who said, “In 10 years you’ll be directing music videos,” I wouldn’t have believed her. It was never an aspiration that I had. When I went to college, my first year, I studied music and I wanted to compose music for film. It wasn’t until a little later that I realized I wanted to direct the films, not just do the music. From that point on, my focus was directing, but I never thought I’d direct music videos until I was in my 20s.
