PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

  • Indie Mixtape
Indie Mixtape :: View email as a web page :: Arcade Fire apparently is in the midst of working on a new album, with writing having “intensified” during the pandemic. In spite of ourselves, we are interested in hearing this quarantine opus, even though we openly disliked their previous album, 2017’s Everything Now. Arcade Fire is also on our brains lately because the 10th anniversary of their third ( and we would argue greatest) album, The Suburbs, was this past weekend. That album, like all Arcade Fire LPs, is a mix of breathtaking musical moments and grandiose, eyeroll-inducing thematic gestures. And yet we wouldn’t want Arcade Fire to be any other way. Sometimes they miss in embarrassing fashion, and other times they absolutely crush it. But they always swing big. For this list of our 20 favorite Arcade Fire songs, we took stock of the crushes while also attempting to understand how and why they miss. -- Steven Hyden, Uproxx Cultural Critic and author of This Isn't Happening: Radiohead's "Kid A" and the Beginning of the 21st Century PS: Was this email forwarded to you? WAYNE MARSHALL Berklee College of Music Email: [email protected] Ragtime Country Rhythmically Recovering Country’s Black Heritage ABSTRACT In 1955, Elvis Presley and Ray Charles each stormed the pop charts with songs employing the same propulsive rhythm. Both would soon be hailed as rock ’n ’roll stars, but today the two songs would likely be described as quintessential examples, respectively, of rockabilly and soul. While seeming by the mid-50s to issue from different cultural universes mapping neatly onto Jim Crow apartheid, their parallel polyrhythms point to a revealing common root: ragtime. Coming to prominence via Maple Leaf Rag (1899) and other ragtime best-sellers, the rhythm in question is exceedingly rare in the Caribbean compared to variations on its triple-duple cousins, such as the Cuban clave. Instead, it offers a distinctive, U.S.-based instantiation of Afrodiasporic aesthetics—one which, for all its remarkable presence across myriad music scenes and eras, has received little attention as an African-American “rhythmic key” that has proven utterly key to the history of American popular music, not least for the sound and story of country. Tracing this particular rhythm reveals how musical figures once clearly heard and marketed as African-American inventions have been absorbed by, foregrounded in, and whitened by country music while they persist in myriad forms of black music in the century since ragtime reigned. KEYWORDS race and ethnic studies, popular music, music history In , Elvis Presley and Ray Charles each stormed the pop charts with songs employing the same propulsive rhythm. • August 2012 Newsletter
August 2012 Newsletter ------------------------------------ Yesterday & Today Records P.O.Box 54 Miranda NSW 2228 Phone: (02) 95311710 Email:[email protected] www.yesterdayandtoday.com.au ------------------------------------------------ Postage Australia post is essentially the world’s most expensive service. We aim to break even on postage and will use the best method to minimise costs. One good innovation is the introduction of the “POST PLUS” satchels, which replace the old red satchels and include a tracking number. Available in 3 sizes they are 500 grams ($7.50) 3kgs ($11.50) 5kgs ($14.50) P & P. The latter 2 are perfect for larger interstate packages as anything over 500 grams even is going to cost more than $11.50. We can take a cd out of a case to reduce costs. Basically 1 cd still $2. 2cds $3 and rest as they will fit. Again Australia Post have this ludicrous notion that if a package can fit through a certain slot on a card it goes as a letter whereas if it doesn’t it is classified as a “parcel” and can cost up to 5 times as much. One day I will send a letter to the Minister for Trade as their policies are distinctly prejudicial to commerce. Out here they make massive profits but offer a very poor number of services and charge top dollar for what they do provide. Still, the mail mostly always gets there. But until ssuch times as their local monopoly remains, things won’t be much different. ----------------------------------------------- For those long term customers and anyone receiving these newsletters for the first time we have several walk in sales per year, with the next being Saturday August 25th.
