The purpose of this study was to obtain data and information on population and habitat Hernandia nymphaeifolia (C. Presl.) Kubitzki species. The method used was line transect method of 1 km with a width of 10 m with a direction parallel to the shore line path. Sample plots of 20 m x 10 m were laid on continuously along the transect to assess the tree level. Sapling and seedling levels were assessed in sub- plot of 10 m x 10 m and 1 m x 1 m, respectively. The results showed that the population density of individual tree H. nymphaeifolia species that occured in the west of Ujung Genteng Protected Forest was more dense than that of in the east. In the west, densities of trees, poles and seedlings were 49, 46, and 10,200 individual/ha, respectively; whereas densities in the east were, 21, 16, and 2,653 individuals/ha. Considering ecological and potential economic value of H. nymphaeifolia, this species need to be protected through in- situ, ex-situ conservation, cultivation and venture on to a sustainable use. Keywords: Multipurpose species, species diversity, coastal forests ABSTRAK Penelitian dilakukan di kawasan Hutan Lindung (HL) Ujung Genteng, Sukabumi, Jawa Barat pada bulan Oktober dan November 2011. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah memperoleh data dan informasi populasi dan habitat spesies kampis (Hernandia nymphaeifolia (C. Presl.) Kubitzki ) di HL Ujung Genteng. Metode yang digunakan adalah jalur transek (line transect method) sepanjang 1 km dengan lebar 10 m dengan arah jalur sejajar garis pantai. Jalur tersebut dibuat plot berukuran 20 m x 10 m bersambungan satu sama lain untuk mendata tingkat pohon. Setiap plot 20 m x 10 m dibuat sub plot berukuran 10 m x 10 m untuk tingkat pancang dan sub-sub plot berukuran 1 m x 1 m untuk pengamatan tingkat semai. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa populasi individu H. nymphaeifolia yang tumbuh di HL Ujung Genteng bagian barat lebih padat daripada di bagian timur. Di bagian barat, kerapatan pohon, pancang, dan semai masing-masing 49, 46, dan 10.200 individu/ha, sedangkan di bagian timur secara berturut-turut 21, tingkat pancang 16 individu/ha, dan semai 2.653 individu/ha. Untuk kepentingan ekologis dan nilai ekonomis potensial, khususnya jenis kampis (H. nymphaeifolia) perlu dipertahankan keberadaannya melalui upaya konservasi in- situ, eks-situ, budidaya serta usaha ke arah penggunaan yang berkelanjutan. Molecular data accumulated since 1999 have shown that monophyletic Laurales consist of Caly- canthaceae, 10 species, ( (Siparunaceae, 70 spp., (Atherospermataceae, 14 spp., Gomortegaceae, 1 sp.)), (Lauraceae, 2500-3000 spp., Hernandiaceae, 50 spp., Monimiaceae, 195 spp.)). As assessed by Guyer and Slowinski’s imbalance metric, Lauraceae and Siparunaceae are signifi­ cantly more species rich than if populations/species in Laurales families had proliferated with some random equal likelihood. Four of these families have fossil records that go back to the Cre­ taceous, one goes back to the Oligocène, and two are unknown as fossils (Hernandiaceae, Siparunaceae). All have multi-locus molecular phylogenies that together include representatives of 79 of the 92 genera, permitting the calibration of local molecular clocks and the comparison of families in terms of the geological periods during which they accumulated most of their extant net diversity. Most data sets exhibit sufficient heterogeneity in substitution rates to warrant semi­ parametric models of sequence evolution in which different rates are assumed between ancestral and descendent branches, but excessive heterogeneity is penalized. A comparison of penalized likelihood chronograms for the six families with more than one species suggests that at the rela­ tively deep level of the analysis, climate change did not affect related families in similar ways. On the other hand, the raise of the Andes appears to relate to bursts of species accumulation in both, Lauraceae and Siparunaceae.

Divergence time estimation relied on an uncorrelated-rates relaxed molecular clock calibrated with outgroup fossils of Lauraceae and Monimiaceae. Results The deepest split in the family is between a predominantly African– Madagascan–Malesian lineage comprising Hazomalania, Hernandia and Illigera, and an African–Neotropical lineage comprising Gyrocarpus and Sparattanthelium; this split may be 122 (110–134) Myr old. The stem lineages of the five genera date back at least to the Palaeocene, but six splits associated with transoceanic range disjunctions date only to the Oligocene and Miocene, implying long-distance dispersal.

The flower is staminate, with an ovoid, hollow floral cup. The perianth consists of 6 tepals, one of which was lost prior to preservation. Numerous helically arranged stamens are borne at the summit of the flower. The anthers are bilocular, with pollen sacs that dehisce by laterally hinged valves. The tip of the connective bears a cup-shaped appendage. The gynoe- cium is represented only by a cluster of vestigial styles centered among the stamens. The fossil is provisionally assigned to order Laurales, its closest affinities being with the families Monimiaceae and Atherospermataceae.
