GLASS SPIDER a Dance Idea for KS3 GLASS SPIDER A dance idea for KS3 A dance based on the lyrics of the song Glass Spider by David Bowie from the album Never Let me Down on vinyl AMLS 3117, cassette TC AMLS 3117, CDP 7466772 and also on some compilations. Twenty pupils from Years 7 & 8 during an extra-curricular dance club developed the dance during five one-hour sessions. They worked their way through ideas generated by the song, gradually building the dance to performance level. The ideas for the dance came from the pupils. The lyrics are vivid and provide a good stimulus. Glass Spider Up until one century ago there lived in the Zi Duang provence of eastern country A glass-like spider Having devoured its prey it would drape the skeletons over its web In weeks creating a macabre Shrine of remains Its web was also unique in that it had many layers, like the floors of a building At the top of this palace like place, assembled with almost apparent care were tiny Shining objects, glass beads, dew-drops. One could almost call it an altar When the breeze blew thru this construction, it produced sounds of wailing, crying Tiny wails, tiny cries. The baby spiders would get scared and search frantically for their mother But the Glass Spider would have long gone, having known that the babies Would survive somehow on their own Oh – The Glass Spider had blue eyes almost like – a human’s They shed tears at the wintered turn of the centuries. Don’t you hear this wasted cry. Life is over you (Mummy’s come back ‘cause the water’s all gone) But you’ve seen who’s in heaven. Is there anyone in hell (Mummy’s come back ‘cause it’s dark now) Take care, take care. (Mummy’s come back ‘cause the water’s all gone) Somewhere she glows divine. Somewhere she wakes alone. But you, you’ve promise in your loving eye. God it’s dark now. Jah Jah Jah Jah Jah Jah Jah Jah Jah Jah Gone. Gone the water’s all gone Mummy come back ‘cause the waters all gone Stay low on the ground, fire can drive you, savage and afraid Spitting the dawn, come come come along before the animals awake Run, run, we’ve been moving all night, rivers to the left If your mother don’t love you then the riverbed might Gone, gone the water’s all gone Mummy come back ‘cause the waters all gone Jah Jah Jah Jah Jah Jah Jah Jah Jah Jah Gone, gone the water’s all gone. Mummy come back ‘cause the waters all gone David Bowie Dance Framework First four stanzas (narrative voice over) Up until one century ago................ Stretching and pulling arm movements to enter stage as if weaving a web. Dancers form a web, layered across the stage ‘like floors of a building’. Two dancers enter and travel around the web making them sway as ‘the breeze They shed tears at the wintered turn of the blew’. century They drape over the dancers in the web like ‘tiny shining objects, glass beads, dew drops’. Stanza 5 (singing voice) Don’t you hear this wasted cry......... Dancers take on a spider movement motif, plie, low, quick, jerky, frantic with arms extended and then join with a partner to do mirror image work. ........................................ God it's dark now. Chorus to the end of song Jah Jah Jah Jah Jah Travel to small groups and use last stanza for support, action/reaction and head turning work. Travel to make two circles with two dancers inside creating a spider shape in the middle (as if the Mother spider) surrounded by moving circles. One travelling to the left and one to the right. ......to end of the song With the final beats of the song, the Mother spider rhythmically goes down as dancers in the circles rhythmically attack and take over to hide the Mother spider. CHAMBERLIN and WILTON IVIE BIOLOGICAL SERIES, Vol. Ill, No. I PUBLISHED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH SALT LAKE CITY THE UNIVERSITY PRESS UNIVERSITY OF UTAH SALT LAKE CITY The Black Widow Spider and its Varieties in the United States B y R a l p h V. C h a m b e r l i n a n d W i l t o n I v i e The spiders of the genus Latrodectus, a member of the family Ther- idiidae, popularly known as the line-weavers or comb-footed spiders, are of world-wide distribution in tropical and sub-tropical latitudes. The genus “comprises those very interesting spiders which, under var ious local names, have been notorious in all ages and in all regions of the world where they occur on account of the reputed deadly nature of their bite.” During several years past in this country they have re ceived widespread attention under the popular name “Black Widow Spider” proposed some years ago by Prof. Comstock. Older popular names sometimes still applied to the form are “Hour-glass Spider,” given in reference to the shape of the bright red spot under the ab domen, and “ Shoe-button Spider,” given in reference to the shining black upper surface of the globular abdomen of the female. The recent interest in this spider has been due chiefly, it would seem, to numerous newspaper articles and reports which have unduly alarmed great numbers of people and have unfortunately brought all manner of spiders under an undeserved suspicion, for spiders in general are among man’s best friends.

  • ITALIAN BOWIE Tutto Di David Bowie in Italia E Visto Dall'italia INTRODUZIONE

  • Late Style, Disability, and the Temporality of Illness in Popular Music
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Singing at Death’s Door: Late Style, Disability, and the Temporality of Illness in Popular Music A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Musicology by Tiffany Naiman 2017 © Copyright by Tiffany Naiman 2017 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Singing at Death’s Door: Late Style, Disability, and the Temporality of Illness in Popular Music by Tiffany Naiman Doctor of Philosophy in Musicology University of California, Los Angeles, 2017 Professor Robert W. Fink, Co-Chair Professor Raymond L. Knapp, Co-Chair This dissertation investigates musical expressions of temporal alterities in works created by popular music artists, identifying their aesthetic responses as their bodies become ill, disabled, and they become more aware of mortality. I propose a critical, hermeneutic, and theoretical method drawn from Edward Said’s appropriation of Adorno’s expression “late style” that I have designated ill style, a form of creativity within a temporality of illness. Late style is discernable in works produced, paradigmatically, at the end of one’s career in “old age,” but late style may also be understood as an influence on artistic output at any stage of life if the subject is experiencing untimeliness and a disruption in access to the communal understanding of futurity and time, a possible consequence of factors other than age. I contend that late style, accelerated by illness, disrupts Western cultural attempts at ignoring precarious and finite nature of existence; the resulting expressions of lateness ask audiences to do the same. I offer a way in which to think more critically about what scholars consider late style, how it functions in popular ii music studies and society, and how it intersects with the fields of disability, gender, queer, and critical race studies, and the social sciences.

PROOF BREATH CHRISTINE BORLAND Art Gallery of York University v ............. Contents Foreword - Loretta Yarlow ‘Vulnerable’ - Michael Tarantino Exhibited Works Notes Spider Texts Appendix List of Works Foreword In the 1997 Münster Sculpture Project I saw Christine Borland's remarkable work The Loretta Yarlow Dead Teach the Living, consisting of seven Director/Curator luminous plastic heads mounted on plinths, situated like a memorial in an outdoor garden. The haunting presence of these reconstructed portrayals of anonymous beings remained with me. Although I had known Christine’s work through exhibitions at the Sean Kelly Gallery in New York and the Lisson Gallery in London, it was the sight of this impressive work that prompted me to invite her to Toronto for a solo exhibition at the Art Gallery of York University. Christine was happy to consider a future exhibition here, but it was not until she began work on Bullet Proof Breath at the Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia in 1999 that an exhibition began to take shape. We originally began discussions about a collaborative exhibition with Michael Tarantino, during his tenure at the Museum of Modern Art in Oxford, England. Now, as an independent curator based in Brussels, Michael helped bring this project to fruition as guest essayist. I am extremely grateful to him for his very personal and insightful text. We agreed to assist the artist in re fabricating Spirit Collection: Hippocrates, a major installation first shown at Dundee Contemporary Arts in 1 999. Three York students committed themselves to working with the artist at the university science laboratory during the summer of 2001, bleaching almost one-hundred plane tree leaves that Christine sent to us from Scotland.
