He has been familiar with the music since the very childhood: his father is a famous jazz musician Olu Dara. Nasir played the trumpet when he was only four and he started to rhyme at age nine. In the late 1970s Nasir’s family moved to Queens, and Nas became interested in hip-hop due to his friend and neighbor Willy 'Ill Will' Graham, who played him different records. In 1985 Nasir’s parents divorced and he quitted the middle school. However, he did not stop learning: he read a lot about the African culture and he paid a lot of attention to religion. As a teenager, Nas performed with his friend Willy Graham, and at that time the rapper used the pseudonym Kid Wave. He changed it into more familiar Nas later. Due to the show of 1991, Nasir managed to get the reputation of a wonder kid, so the next year MC Serch from 3rd Bass became his manager and helped him to sign the contract with Columbia Records. Nas’ debut single Halftime was released in 1992, and his lyrics and rhymes attracted attention in the hip-hop community. Nas was even entitled new Rakim. The rapper’s debut album Illmatic was released in 1994 and it is considered to be one of the best hip-hop albums ever. The Source gave a fair review to the record, which had been created with the help of Q-Tip, L.E.S and Nasir’s father Olu Dara. Musical critics acclaimed Illmatic, and the lyrics was described as highly literate. Indeed, in his songs Nas talks about serious things, nevertheless the despair is not the key word: there is always hope for the best. In 1994 Nas performed the song One on One, which was included into Street Fighter soundtrack. Pdanet 3.50 for pc full version free download. That year the musician also participated in the creation of Mobb Deep, AZ и Kool G Rap albums. In 1994 Nas’ ex- fiancée gave birth to their daughter, who was named Destiny. Nas Illmatic Zip Download. Nas’ second album It Was Written was released in 1996. Due to the new sound and such songs as If I Ruled the World (Imagine That) and Street Dreams Nas became a part of the mainstream hip-hop. About this time Nas, AZ, Foxy Brown and Cormega organized the super-band The Firm. They signed the contract with Dr. Dre’s label Aftermath Entertainment and started working on their debut album. Later Cormega quitted the band, and his place was taken by Nature. In 1997 the record titled Nas, Foxy Brown, AZ, and Nature Present The Firm: The Album was issued. That album was certified platinum, however the musicians decided to split and to work on their solo projects. In 1998 Nas co-wrote and starred in the movie Belly, directed by Harold Williams. A year later the musician released his album I Am.. The Autobiography (1999), with every track describing some part of his life. By 2001 Nas and Jay-Z had an intense relationship, and everybody found out about their feud after the songs, in which both rappers mocked each other. Jay-Z’s Takeover was replied with Nas’ song Ether, which was later included into his album Stillmatic (2001). The conflict was settled by 2005, and rappers even performed on one stage with Jay-Z’s song Dead Presidents, sampled from Nas’ composition The World Is Yours. In 2005 Nasir married rhythm and blues singer Kelis. On April, 2009 Kelis filed for divorce, and on July she gave birth to their son, Knight. The musician’s new record Distant Relatives was released in 2010, only two years after the album Untitled (2008). Distant Relatives already attracted a lot of attention: the famous rapper recorded it with Damian Marley, who is hardly less famous. The mix of their lyrics and their music is twice more interesting. Reggae gives some new shades, richening the hip-hop beats. The quality of the text is traditionally high, due to the collaboration of two professionals. There is no doubt that the new sound will be enjoyed both by reggae and hip-hop music lovers. Nas Illmatic Album Zip. • In Defense of Rap Music: Not Just Beats, Rhymes, Sex, and Violence
In Defense of Rap Music: Not Just Beats, Rhymes, Sex, and Violence THESIS Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Master of Arts Degree in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Crystal Joesell Radford, BA Graduate Program in Education The Ohio State University 2011 Thesis Committee: Professor Beverly Gordon, Advisor Professor Adrienne Dixson Copyrighted by Crystal Joesell Radford 2011 Abstract This study critically analyzes rap through an interdisciplinary framework. The study explains rap‟s socio-cultural history and it examines the multi-generational, classed, racialized, and gendered identities in rap. Rap music grew out of hip-hop culture, which has – in part – earned it a garnering of criticism of being too “violent,” “sexist,” and “noisy.” This criticism became especially pronounced with the emergence of the rap subgenre dubbed “gangsta rap” in the 1990s, which is particularly known for its sexist and violent content. Rap music, which captures the spirit of hip-hop culture, evolved in American inner cities in the early 1970s in the South Bronx at the wake of the Civil Rights, Black Nationalist, and Women‟s Liberation movements during a new technological revolution. During the 1970s and 80s, a series of sociopolitical conscious raps were launched, as young people of color found a cathartic means of expression by which to describe the conditions of the inner-city – a space largely constructed by those in power. Rap thrived under poverty, police repression, social policy, class, and gender relations (Baker, 1993; Boyd, 1997; Keyes, 2000, 2002; Perkins, 1996; Potter, 1995; Rose, 1994, 2008; Watkins, 1998).

KANYE WEST, et al., Defendants-Appellees. Appeal from the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, Eastern Division. No. 10 C 3951—Virginia M. Kendall, Judge. ARGUED MARCH 26, 2012—DECIDED AUGUST 20, 2012 Before EASTERBROOK, Chief Judge, and BAUER and WOOD, Circuit Judges. WOOD, Circuit Judge. In 2006, Vincent Peters, whose stage name is Vince P, wrote, recorded, and distributed a song entitled Stronger. The song’s title comes from a key line in its “hook” (refrain or chorus). The line in turn draws from an aphorism coined by Friedrich Nietzsche: “what does not kill me, makes me stronger.” Case: 11-1708 Document: 33 Filed: 08/20/2012 Pages: 21 2 No. 11-1708 Vince P believes that he had an opportunity to “make it” in the hip-hop recording industry—he needed only to find an executive producer. His search led him to John Monopoly, a business manager and close friend of Kanye West, one of hip-hop’s superstars. Vince P sent Monopoly a disc containing a recording of Stronger, and even secured a meeting with Monopoly, during which Vince P played his recording of Stronger for Monopoly. Monopoly was apparently impressed and agreed to be Vince P’s producer, so long as Vince P was funded by a record label. That funding never materialized, unfortu- nately, and so the proposed collaboration foundered.

Abstract Since the 1920s, multiple historically specific factors led to the automobile-saturated environ- ment of Los Angeles, contributing to a car-dependent lifestyle for most of its inhabitants. With car travel as its primary mode of mobility, and as a hub of numerous cultural industries through- out the twentieth century, the city has been the breeding ground for a number of car cultures, including hot rods, custom cars, and lowriders in addition to the large output of films and music recordings produced. In rap music of the early 1990s, producer/rapper Dr. Dre’s (Andre Romelle Young) creation of a style labelled ‘G-funk’, according to him, was created and mixed specifically for listening in car stereo systems. This article provides one case study of music’s intersections with geography, both the influence of urban geography on music production and the geogra- phy of particular listening spaces.

  • Hip-Hop Realness and the White Performer Mickey Hess
Critical Studies in Media Communication Vol. 22, No. 5, December 2005, pp. 372Á/389 Hip-hop Realness and the White Performer Mickey Hess Hip-hop’s imperatives of authenticity are tied to its representations of African-American identity, and white rap artists negotiate their place within hip-hop culture by responding to this African-American model of the authentic. This article examines the strategies used by white artists such as Vanilla Ice, Eminem, and the Beastie Boys to establish their hip- hop legitimacy and to confront rap music’s representations of whites as socially privileged and therefore not credible within a music form where credibility is often negotiated through an artist’s experiences of social struggle. The authenticating strategies of white artists involve cultural immersion, imitation, and inversion of the rags-to-riches success stories of black rap stars. Keywords: Hip-hop; Rap; Whiteness; Racial Identity; Authenticity; Eminem Although hip-hop music has become a global force, fans and artists continue to frame hip-hop as part of African-American culture. In his discussion of Canadian, Dutch, and French rap Adam Krims (2000) noted the prevailing image of African-American hip-hop as ‘‘real’’ hip-hop.1 African-American artists often extend this image of the authentic to frame hip-hop as a black expressive culture facing appropriation by a white-controlled record industry. This concept of whiteÁ/black interaction has led white artists either to imitate the rags-to-riches narratives of black artists, as Vanilla Ice did in the fabricated biography he released to the press in 1990, or to invert these narratives, as Eminem does to frame his whiteness as part of his struggle to succeed as a hip-hop artist.

New material: mainstreaning and undergrounding in the second golden age. ◦ Advertising, The Source ◦ West Coast: Dre, Snoop, Tupac, Pharcyde, Freestyle Fellowship, Boss ◦ East Coast: Biggie, Nas, Lil Kim, Wu Tang, Mobb Deep Research strategies Developing a research question (final paper): • "Research" is just developing the courage to listen to the voices inside you that want to know more. You may have to do some work to quiet those other voices. • Think back to lectures, remember those moments where something really interest you. This has to be something that you want to know more about, and that is related to hip hop music (somehow). • Listen to music you like, keep an open mind, and see what questions it provokes. For finding "sources" (final paper): • roger.ucsd.edu -- the library catalog. • jstor.org -- the University pays to subscribe to services like this so that you can get access to academic research journalism • best of all: Peter Mueller. Set up a meeting with him and just state your question. "I want to know more about ... " will always yield useful results. When you're writing about the music (both papers), think back to our analytical categories: • Timbre, mode, pocket, kick/snare/ride, the feel/quality of a rapper's flow, the intricacy of the rhyme schemes, where and when the sampled content comes from, etc.

  • Was Foucault a Plagiarist? Hip-Hop Sampling and Academic Citation Mickey Hess
Computers and Composition 23 (2006) 280–295 Was Foucault a plagiarist? Hip-hop sampling and academic citation Mickey Hess Department of English, Rider University, Lawrenceville, NJ 08648, United States Abstract This article argues that comparing academic citation and hip-hop sampling can help students become better users of sourcework. I contend that sampling and academic writing share a goal of building new work in response to existing sources and that this goal is obscured by lawsuits that reduce sampling to theft by applying to sound a copyright regulation system designed for print. Both sampling and citing seek to build new compositions by working from sources, yet academic citation systems preserve textual ownership through attribution while sampling often guards or disguises its sources. These different stances in regard to authorship and ownership belie the values shared by the two systems. © 2006 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. Keywords: Sampling; Hip-hop; Intellectual property; Citation; Plagiarism Sometimes I quote someone without using quotation marks or a footnote to give the name of the source. It seems like I’m just supposed to prove I’ve read this famous scholar, and I say why should I have to put quotes around it if you can’t even recognize who it comes from? The passage above seems to undermine so much of what we teach about academic writing. It is paraphrased, not from a conversation with a student, but from an interview with Michel Foucault (1980) where he described his citation practices in regard to Marx and Marxism: I often quote concepts, texts and phrases from Marx, but without feeling obliged to add the authenticating label of a footnote with a laudatory phrase to accompany the quotation.
