This narrative follows the author's journey in teaching Leslie Feinberg's Stone Butch Blues and teaching about the death of Brandon Teena, a person born biologically female but who lived a chosen male identity and who was murdered in Nebraska for that choice. Courtesy Cleis Press. Many of the early autobiographies were written by transsexual women whose gender identities had been revealed by the press. Forced into the media spotlight because they were transsexual, their work often served as a response to the stereotypes and misinformation circulated about their experiences. But in the last decade, as the existence of transsexual individuals has become less of a novelty to much of society, transsexual women autobiographers have been able to shift their focus from challenging sensationalized portrayals of their personal lives to creating a public image that reflects how they understand their gender identities. Although comparatively fewer autobiographies have been published by transsexual men as opposed to transsexual women, a growing number of such works in the last few years has led to a greater recognition of the diversity of transsexual identities. Early Transsexual Autobiographies Given the unprecedented news coverage that Christine Jorgensen received beginning in 1952 for being the first person from the United States publicly known to have had a "sex change," it is not surprising that her 1967 life story would be the most widely known among the early transsexual autobiographies. -

LUCIE ARMITT ON SARAH WATERS’S THE LITTLE STRANGER Garden Paths and Blind Spots When I interviewed Sarah Waters in 2006, I reminded her of an attempt I had made on our first meeting to try and ‘claim’ her as a Welsh Writer. Though now residing in London, she was, of course, born in Pembrokeshire, and I continue to hope to see her to reflect on that aspect of her identity in her fiction. Her response, however, was candid: ‘I love London precisely because I have come to it from a small town in Pembrokeshire – which was a great place to grow up in, but London seemed to me to be the place to go to perhaps slightly re-invent yourself, or to find communities of people – in my case, gay people – that you couldn't find at home.’ 1 In her new novel, The Little Stranger , she does not return to Wales, but she does return to the countryside, setting the novel in the rural Warwickshire village of Lidcote, near Leamington Spa. Waters has, of course, established herself as a writer of lesbian historical fiction and has self-consciously situated her work within a lesbian literary tradition. In the months and weeks prior to the publication of The Little Stranger rumours circulated, allegedly prompted by Waters herself, that there were to be no lesbian characters in it and, indeed, at first sight there are not. The Little Stranger is set just after the end of the Second World War and just before the introduction of the National Health Service in 1948, therefore taking up where the 1947 section of her previous novel, The Night Watch (2006), ends. -

Long a part of the struggle for queer liberation, Feinberg openly identified as transgendered and was outspoken about "hir" experiences living outside of the gender binary. ("Ze" has expressed the need for our language to incorporate alternate pronouns such as "hir" rather than "her" or "his," and "ze" or "sie" as opposed to "he" or "she.") Feinberg was born in Kansas City, Missouri on September 1, 1949, and reared in Buffalo, New York, in a working-class Jewish family. At age 14, ze began supporting hirself by working in the display sign shop of a local department store, and eventually stopped going to hir high school classes, though officially ze received her diploma. It was during this time that ze entered the social life of the Buffalo gay bars. Facing blatant discrimination as a transgender person, ze found it difficult to attain steady work. For most of hir life, ze earned her living through a series of low-wage temporary jobs, including working in a PVC pipe factory and a book bindery, cleaning out ship cargo holds and washing dishes, serving an ASL interpreter, and inputting medical data. Feinberg is perhaps best known as the author of the widely acclaimed novel Stone Butch Blues (Firebrand Books, 1993). In response to the common assumption that the novel is semi-autobiographical, ze insisted that the book is a work of fiction. -

Rivera, a Puerto Rican drag queen, was a combatant at the Stonewall Rebellion in June 1969 that ignited the young gay liberation movement. Sylvia Rivera and African American drag queen Marsha P. Johnson co-founded STAR: Street Transvestites Action Revolutionaries in New York City in 1970. In this interview, which is included in Feinberg's upcoming non-fiction book "Trans Liberation: Beyond Pink or Blue" (Beacon, Oct. 1998), Rivera describes memories of life on the streets of New York as a drag queen, the uprising in Greenwich Village, and the era that followed: I left home at age 10 in 1961. I hustled on 42nd Street. The early 60s was not a good time for drag queens, effeminate boys or boys that wore makeup like we did. Back then we were beat up by the police, by everybody. I didn't really come out as a drag queen until the late 60s. When drag queens were arrested, what degradation there was. I remember the first time I got arrested, I wasn't even in full drag. I was walking down the street and the cops just snatched me. We always felt that the police were the real enemy. We expected nothing better than to be treated like we were animals-and we were. We were stuck in a bullpen like a bunch of freaks. We were disrespected. -

Transfeminist Perspectives in and Beyond Transgender and Gender Studies Seeks to Highlight the Productive and Sometimes Fraught Potential of This Relationship
A. FINN ENKE Introduction Transfeminist Perspectives his book is born of the conviction that feminist studies and transgender studies are intimately connected to one another in their endeavor to T analyze epistemologies and practices that produce gender. Despite this connection, they are far from integrated. Transfeminist Perspectives in and beyond Transgender and Gender Studies seeks to highlight the productive and sometimes fraught potential of this relationship. Feminist, women’s, and gender studies grew partly from Simone de Beauvoir’s observation that “one is not born, but rather becomes, a woman.”1 Transgender studies extends this founda- tion, emphasizing that there is no natural process by which anyone becomes woman, and also that everyone’s gender is made: Gender, and also sex, are made through complex social and technical manipulations that naturalize some while abjecting others. In this, both feminist and transgender studies acknowledge the mutual imbrications of gender and class formations, dis/abilities, racializations, political economies, incarcerations, nationalisms, migrations and dislocations, and so forth. We share, perhaps, a certain delight and trepidation in the aware- ness that gender is trouble: Gender may trouble every imaginable social relation and fuel every imaginable social hierarchy; it may also threaten to undo itself and us with it, even as gender scholars simultaneously practice, undo, and rein- vest in gender.2 Women’s and gender studies have registered increasing interest in things transgender since the mid-1990s. Scholars have organized conferences on the topic, and numerous feminist journals have published special transgender issues.3 Th is interest has been inspired in part by inquiry into the meanings of gender, bodies, and embodiment, by transnational and cross-cultural studies that address the varied ways in which cultures ascribe gender, and also by insti- tutional practices that circumscribe or broaden the range of gender legibility. -
