  • Doctor Who and the Genesis of the Daleks
DOCTOR WHO AND THE GENESIS OF THE DALEKS By Terrance Dicks 1 SECRET MISSION It was a battlefield. The ground was churned, scarred, ravaged. Nothing grew there, nothing lived. The twisted, rusting wrecks of innumerable war machines littered the landscape. There were strands of ragged, tangled wire, collapsed dugouts, caved-in trenches. The perpetual twilight was made darker by fog. Thick, dank and evil, it swirled close to the muddy ground, hiding some of the horrors from view. Something stirred in the mud. A goggled, helmeted head peered over a ridge, surveyed the shattered landscape. A hand beckoned, and more shapes rose and shambled forward. There were about a dozen of them, battle-weary men in ragged uniforms, their weapons a strange mixture of old and new, their faces hidden by gas masks. A star shell burst over their heads, bathing them for a moment in its sickly green light before it sputtered into darkness. The thump of artillery came from somewhere in the distance, with the hysterical chatter of automatic weapons. But the firing was some distance away. Too tired even to react, the patrol shambled on its way. A man materialized out of the fog and stood looking in bewilderment after the soldiers. He was a very tall man, dressed in comfortable, old tweed trousers and a loosely hanging jacket. An amazingly long scarf was wound round his neck, a battered, broad-rimmed hat was jammed onto a tangle of curly brown hair. Hands deep in his pockets, he pivoted slowly on his heels, turning in a complete circle to survey the desolate landscape.

The only sounds were the chirps of insects, the subtle creak and rustle of the trees as the breeze gently bent their flexible upper branches. Occasionally, a bird or reptile let out a screech or squawk, momentarily breaking the calm, yet these natural sounds did not disrupt the peace. Had anyone been in the forest to appreciate it, they would have felt as if they were the only person in the world. They would have experienced something of a shock then, as a deafening roar tore through the air without warning, a grinding, wailing cacophony that betrayed its artificial origins as it ripped through the tranquility of the forest environment.

But it would not remain so for long. MASTER Your twelfth and final incarnation… and may I say you do not improve with age1. By the intermediate draft represented by the novelisation2 this has become: ‘The Valeyard, Doctor, is your penultimate reincarnation… Somewhere between your twelfth and thirteenth regeneration… and I may I say, you do not improve with age..!’3 The shooting script has: 1 While Robert Holmes had introduced the idea of a Time Lord being limited to 12 regenerations, (and thus 13 lives, as the first incarnation of a Time Lord has not yet regenerated) in his script for The Deadly Assassin, his draft conflates incarnations and regenerations in a way that suggests that either he was no longer au fait with how the terminology had come to be used in Doctor Who by the 1980s (e.g.

  • Doctor Who's Feminine Mystique
Doctor Who’s Feminine Mystique: Examining the Politics of Gender in Doctor Who By Alyssa Franke Professor Sarah Houser, Department of Government, School of Public Affairs Professor Kimberly Cowell-Meyers, Department of Government, School of Public Affairs University Honors in Political Science American University Spring 2014 Abstract In The Feminine Mystique, Betty Friedan examined how fictional stories in women’s magazines helped craft a societal idea of femininity. Inspired by her work and the interplay between popular culture and gender norms, this paper examines the gender politics of Doctor Who and asks whether it subverts traditional gender stereotypes or whether it has a feminine mystique of its own. When Doctor Who returned to our TV screens in 2005, a new generation of women was given a new set of companions to look up to as role models and inspirations. Strong and clever, socially and sexually assertive, these women seemed to reject traditional stereotypical representations of femininity in favor of a new representation of femininity. But for all Doctor Who has done to subvert traditional gender stereotypes and provide a progressive representation of femininity, its story lines occasionally reproduce regressive discourses about the role of women that reinforce traditional gender stereotypes and ideologies about femininity. This paper explores how gender is represented and how norms are constructed through plot lines that punish and reward certain behaviors or choices by examining the narratives of the women Doctor Who’s titular protagonist interacts with. Ultimately, this paper finds that the show has in recent years promoted traits more in line with emphasized femininity, and that the narratives of the female companion’s have promoted and encouraged their return to domestic roles.

  • The Doctor's Personality
APPENDIX 1: THE DOCTOR’S PERSONALITY Note This preprint is being made available because the first printing of the book this appendix appeared in contained an error in the figures that made them uninterpretable. The following can be interpreted without referring to the book, but for full context it could help to read Chapter 1 in: Rodebaugh, T. L. (2019). The Black Archive #27: The Face of Evil. Obverse Books: Edinburgh, UK. Typical APA-style references are not given, but the original text plus an online search should suffice for the interested reader. Finally, if the reader does not have a passing acquaintance with the television show Doctor Who, none of this will make any sense at all. A Demonstration of the Big Five Personality Traits In Chapter 1 I proposed that we can use the Five Factor Model of personality to understand the Doctor’s personality and analyse to what extent the Doctor is more accurately described as the same person played by different actors, as opposed to a set of entirely different people with different personalities. I therefore collected some data to test the ‘same person’ hypothesis versus the ‘different people’ hypothesis. I should be clear that I did not approach this question entirely as I would if I were conducting scientific research, although I did use some scientific methods. Of the many things I would do differently if I were conducting scientific research, two are worth a special mention. First, I would have pre-registered my hypotheses in some format (most likely on the online Open Science Framework) prior to collecting data or testing my hypotheses.

  • Master of All!
INFINITE WHONIVERSES- MASTER OF ALL! A SEQUEL TO Unity is Strength (INFERNO 3RD DOCTOR) “Once you start down the Dark Path, forever will it dominate your Destiny.”- Yoda- Star Wars- The Empire Strikes Back. 1 Prologue- The Panopticon on Gallifrey- There was uproar in the Panopticon as High Councillors vehemently argued with each other, the Lord High President left stunned and speechless as the news sank in. The Planet Earth in the 20th Century Timezone was gone, a burnt husk of a world, survivors few and scattered. There was incalculable damage to the Timeline. Two Timelords had been sent to investigate, to find out how it could have happened. Until then speculation and rumour brought disagreement and discontent to Gallifrey. Only a Timelord could cause such damage. While there were a few suspects, the two most likely candidates were Koschei of House Oakdown and The Doctor of House Lungbarrow, who had been exiled to Earth to prevent a number of invasions in that period. Had he failed? Whoever was responsible would be found and punished for the damage to the Web of Time. --- Koschei-Mordox-Skaara-Tre-Kordor of House Oakdown was no more, now he was THE MASTER OF AL L! He breathed deep, relishing his new body. The utter foolishness of the High Council would be their undoing. He grinned at the thought. The two emissaries, Borusa and Vancell had arrived to find him weak. The Alternate version of 2 himself had bungled the job of trying to kill him. He chuckled at the absurdity of the concept.
