Operators ran the plant at very low power, without adequate safety precautions and without properly coordinating or communicating the 1 procedure with safety personnel. Sudden Heat Increase The power surge caused a sudden increase in heat, which ruptured some of the pressure tubes containing fuel. The hot fuel particles reacted with water and caused a steam explosion, which lifted the 1,000-metric-ton cover off the top of the reactor, causing a second explosion and exposing 2 the reactor core to the environment. The fire burned for 10 days, releasing a large amount of radiation into the atmosphere. Different Characteristics The reactor built at Chernobyl is an RBMK reactor, which was never built by any country outside the USSR because it had characteristics that were rejected everywhere outside the Soviet Union. The most important of these features was its inherent instability, especially on startup and shutdown. The reactor used graphite where 3 American reactors use water. Thirty-one people died within a few weeks of the accident from the initial steam explosion, exposure to radiation and thermal burns, and one due to cardiac arrest. 6 EUROCHANNEL GUIDE APRIL 2020 THREE MYTHS ABOUT CHERNOBYL Celebrating the airing of Chernobyl: Aftermath, a Ukrainian series about an impossible love set against the backdrop of the 1986 nuclear disaster, these are three myths that have become popular, but false, about the explosion and its consequences. Mutant Creatures It is of popular belief the idea of nuclear radiation causing severe mutations in animals and people has been a long-established idea, although one with little scientific foundation. During 60 years of research, science has not registered any genetic mutations connected with radiation. What is more, 20 years after the Chernobyl tragedy, the International Commission on Radiological Protection, seeing that there are no reasons to believe of potential genetic risks, downgraded the related risks by 90%. Nature Damage If you believe that after the explosion there is nothing left in and around Chernobyl and Pripyat, you’re wrong. In fact, the exclusion zone is one of the few places on earth that had become wilder as the years go by. A documentary filmed by 4 News from the UK, proved that wildlife is booming in the area, with the appearance of species like the lynx, and even the proof of a brown bear… the only one that has been spotted in Ukraine. Chaotic evacuation Thanks to the portrayal of the USSR in the western world, many people believe that a significant number of people died because of the explosion due to a lack of coordination and resources in the region. In fact, the evacuation of nearly 120,000 people was done quickly and professionally despite its urgency. It is also untrue that people received large radiation doses during the evacuation and suffered life-threatening mutations. To this day, there have been cases of people returning to their old homes to live there, some of them even reaching more than 80 years of age. How “When They See Us” and “Chernobyl” Make Us Look These new true-story series manage to make depressing, traumatic material not merely watchable but mesmerizing. By Emily Nussbaum The New Yorker, June 17, 2019 https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2019/06/24/how- when-they-see-us-and-chernobyl-make-us-look In the third episode of “When They See Us,” Ava DuVernay’s bleak, beautiful drama about the Central Park Five, Linda McCray (Marsha Stephanie Blake) visits her son Antron in a juvenile-detention center. “I feel like everybody in the world hate me, Mom,” Antron (Caleel Harris) tells her. “I know it feels like that,” she says, then adds, fiercely, “But I love you enough to make up for everybody.” As music rises, Linda tells her son that she is always with him: “You cry, I cry. You mad, I’m mad. You scared, I’m scared. You free, I’m free.” The camera cuts to autumn leaves—and to the day of Antron’s release from prison, seven years later, as the child actor is replaced by a handsome adult, embracing his mother. “Hi, baby,” Linda says. It’s an elegant, affecting sequence—at once grand and simple, movingly performed— which captures the central ethos of the show. “When They See Us,” on Netflix, is a harrowing story about a hideous injustice: the railroading of a group of five black and Latino boys for the beating and rape of Trisha Meili, who was attacked while jogging in Central Park, in 1989. The show portrays a racist justice system and an equally hellish penal system, as well as media that amplified the lies that put the boys in prison.

  • Mary, Undoer of Knots – a Novena Adapted for Steven Donziger and the People of the Ecuadorian Amazon
Mary, Undoer of Knots – a Novena Adapted for Steven Donziger and the People of the Ecuadorian Amazon If everything is related, then the health of a society’s institutions has consequences for the environment and the quality of human life. ‘Every violation of solidarity and civic friendship harms the environment.’ (Caritas in Veritate, 51) In this sense, social ecology is necessarily institutional, and gradually extends to the whole of society, from the primary social group, the family, to the wider local, national, and international communities. Within each social stratum, and between them, institutions develop to regulate human relationships. Anything which weakens those institutions has negative consequences, such as injustice, violence and loss of freedom. (Laudato Si, 142) [CALL FOR PRAYER] After generations of struggle, the indigenous people of the Ecuadorian Amazon have successfully traversed the international legal system to achieve a measure of justice for generations of deliberate dumping of petrochemicals into Amazon. These actions, one of the Earth’s most important ecosystems. However, there remains many knots to untie to realize this justice. Prayers for justice, fortitude, temperance, and prudence are needed to sustain a global community of advocates for these marginalized people. [STRUCTURE] For nine days, beginning May 1, 2021, we will join together around the world to pray. We will use as our guide the devotion to MARY, UNDOER OF KNOTS. This novena has been adapted to invite not only those familiar with the Catholic practice of this Marian devotion but also to welcome all of those from other faith traditions and places of spiritual good-will.

  • Loki Production Brief
PRODUCTION BRIEF “I am Loki, and I am burdened with glorious purpose.” —Loki arvel Studios’ “Loki,” an original live-action series created exclusively for Disney+, features the mercurial God of Mischief as he steps out of his brother’s shadow. The series, described as a crime-thriller meets epic-adventure, takes place after the events Mof “Avengers: Endgame.” “‘Loki’ is intriguingly different with a bold creative swing,” says Kevin Feige, President, Marvel Studios and Chief Creative Officer, Marvel. “This series breaks new ground for the Marvel Cinematic Universe before it, and lays the groundwork for things to come.” The starting point of the series is the moment in “Avengers: Endgame” when the 2012 Loki takes the Tesseract—from there Loki lands in the hands of the Time Variance Authority (TVA), which is outside of the timeline, concurrent to the current day Marvel Cinematic Universe. In his cross-timeline journey, Loki finds himself a fish out of water as he tries to navigate—and manipulate—his way through the bureaucratic nightmare that is the Time Variance Authority and its by-the-numbers mentality. This is Loki as you have never seen him. Stripped of his self- proclaimed majesty but with his ego still intact, Loki faces consequences he never thought could happen to such a supreme being as himself. In that, there is a lot of humor as he is taken down a few pegs and struggles to find his footing in the unforgiving bureaucracy of the Time Variance Authority. As the series progresses, we see different sides of Loki as he is drawn into helping to solve a serious crime with an agent 1 of the TVA, Mobius, who needs his “unique Loki perspective” to locate the culprits and mend the timeline.
