In the media debate surrounding the Christian ex-gay movement, the phrase “pray the gay away” is often used as shorthand to describe the movement’s religiously mediated sexual orientation conversion efforts. However, when one digs deeper, not just into ex-gay practices, but into the debate itself, it becomes clear that ex-gay change—regardless of whether effective or not—is less about prayer than confession and testimony. Consider writer-director Jamie Babbit’s film But I’m a Cheerleader, a campy, comedic tale of a lesbian cheerleader forced into an ex-gay conversion camp (featuring drag queen Ru Paul in a rare not-in-drag performance). The film, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 1999, is the second fictional pop culture text to depict the movement1 and it is all about confession. It is an iconic depiction, an intervention in the debate that is frequently referenced and imitated. It is mentioned in a 2011 documentary called This is What Love in Action Looks Like about real-life teenager Zach Stark being forced into an ex-gay conversion program; it is imitated in both a 2007 episode of the popular Comedy Central animated satire South Park, in which the character Butters is forced into an ex-gay conversion program, and a 2013 episode of Saturday Night Live featuring Ben Affleck as an ex-gay counsellor. -

In 2015, the UN Human Rights Commissioner called for all nations to ban conversion therapies. This research investigates a neglected area of scholarship on the ex-gay movement by deconstructing and analyzing the implications of ex-gay discourses of female homosexuality in a global context. The ex-gay movement originated in the United States and has proliferated to nearly every continent. We argue that it is the main purveyor of public, anti-lesbian rhetoric today, constructing lesbianism as sinful and sick to control women’s sexuality, enforce rigid gender roles and inequality, and oppress sexual minority women. Guided by Adrienne Rich’s theory of compulsory heterosexuality and Barbara Risman’s gender structure theory, we analyze how, in ex-gay discourse, lesbianism is demeaned and demonized in the individual, interactional, and institutional dimensions of the gender structure. Finally, we examine the impact of ex-gay discourse on sexual minority women in global context. -

As a loose organization of mostly Christian ministries and psychotherapy practices that offers “freedom from homosexuality,” the movement offers religious and psychological confessions of sin and disease and testimonies of truth and belief as technologies of both self- sacrifice and identity formation. The aim is to control unwanted same-sex desire through life- long labour and struggle so as to sacrifice one’s gay or lesbian identity for an ex-gay identity. However, in the debate surrounding the movement, those opposed use confessions of trauma and harm, and testimonies of their own truth and belief, to try and sacrifice the movement in favour of gay and lesbian identities. Confession and testimony, then, which are two sides of the same coin, underlie the discourses and practices of all involved in ex-gay truth games. In the 1970s and 80s the ex-gay movement operated in the shadows of Christianity as an embarrassing secret. This dissertation analyzes the movement from the 1990s, when, in alliance with the Christian Right, it “came out of the closet” through a cross-platform advertising campaign that generated fifteen years’ worth of “earned media” in news and popular culture entertainment. -

Navigating the forbidden: Exploring religious and sexual identity conflict through the lens of law Eliza Kate Bateman Faculty of Law McGill University Montreal, 2018 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Civil Law December 2018 © Eliza Bateman, 2018 1 ABSTRACT This thesis considers the tensions that lesbian or gay (“L/G”) religious people experience between their sexual and religious identities and how they negotiate these tensions. Specifically, it analyzes the challenges of evangelical Christian men who identify as ‘ex-gay’ and Orthodox Jewish women who identify as lesbian. Most of the people who are the focus of this research live within religious communities—situated within a more secular state framework (the USA)—that disavow same-sex attraction as a matter of religious principle and law. This dissertation is informed by a feminist methodology and a legal pluralism and critical legal pluralism theoretical framework. A legal pluralist and critical legal pluralist theoretical lens draws out the legal norms relevant for these L/G people with respect to sexuality and intimate relationships. The application of this framework illuminates the unique negotiations that these people undergo with respect to sexuality and explains the significance of a religious worldview to their normative choices. Ultimately, the legal analysis reflects the complexity and depth of these legal subjects. Feminist methods are used in the legal commentary, emphasising connections between personal, first-hand narratives and legal analyses of inequality, advocacy and gendered power relations. This thesis draws on narratives provided by L/G Christian or Jewish people, including memoirs, media articles, documentaries, blog contributions and online interviews. -

The oppression of transgender people in the US and globally is fed and fueled by the religious, scientific, and political discourses of the transnational “ex-gay” movement, which provides the ideological and material foundation of Christian Right politics. Using critical discourse analysis of ex-gay texts, we analyze the implications of these discourses in the individual, interactional, and institutional dimensions of society’s gender structure. This movement is one of the most insidious—and overlooked—sources of cisgenderism and transmisogyny today, constructing gender variance as sin, mental illness, and danger—with catastrophic consequences for transgender people, and those along the transfemale/feminine spectrum in particular. Introduction If 2014 represented an historic “tipping point” of visibility and progress for transgender Americans (Steinmetz 2014), the vicious, violent backlash that ensued stains the present.
