  • COMMUNICATING FINDINGS from SOCIAL SCIENCE RESEARCH on SEXUAL ORIENTATION to the COURTS Gregory M
SETTING THE RECORD “STRAIGHT”: COMMUNICATING FINDINGS FROM SOCIAL SCIENCE RESEARCH ON SEXUAL ORIENTATION TO THE COURTS Gregory M. Herek, Ph.D. [To appear in: Hammack, P. (Ed.). The Oxford Handbook of Social Psychology and Social Justice. Oxford University Press, 2018.] This chapter describes some of the ways in which social science knowledge about sexual orientation and sexual stigma has been applied to social justice issues through federal and state courts. The author draws examples from his own experiences as an expert witness in cases such as Perry v. Schwarzenegger, the landmark 2010 federal case that ultimately overturned Proposition 8, California’s voter-enacted constitutional ban on marriage for same-sex couples. The chapter also provides some general background information on what being an expert witness in cases such as Perry entails. Suggestions are offered for social scientists who wish to communicate empirical research findings to the courts, legislators, and policymakers. ______________________________________ The behavioral and social sciences have a long history of trying to foster informed decision making and promote social justice by contributing to policy and legal debates. For example, when the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues (SPSSI) was founded in 1936 as a division of the American Psychological Association (APA), part of its stated mission was “to Preprintencourage research upon those psychological problems most vitally related to modern social, economic and political policies…. [and] to help the public and its representatives to understand and to use in the formation of social policies, contributions from the scientific investigation of human behavior (Krech & Cartwright, 1956, p. 471; see also Kimmel, 1997).

  • Introduction to Confess the Gay Away? Media, Religion, and the Political Economy of Ex-Gay Therapy
Introduction to Confess the Gay Away? Media, Religion, and the Political Economy of Ex-gay Therapy by Michael Thorn A PORTION OF THE DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN COMMUNICATION AND CULTURE YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO April 2015 ©Michael Thorn, 2015 1 Introduction: Confess Thy Self? In the media debate surrounding the Christian ex-gay movement, the phrase “pray the gay away” is often used as shorthand to describe the movement’s religiously mediated sexual orientation conversion efforts. However, when one digs deeper, not just into ex-gay practices, but into the debate itself, it becomes clear that ex-gay change—regardless of whether effective or not—is less about prayer than confession and testimony. Consider writer-director Jamie Babbit’s film But I’m a Cheerleader, a campy, comedic tale of a lesbian cheerleader forced into an ex-gay conversion camp (featuring drag queen Ru Paul in a rare not-in-drag performance). The film, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 1999, is the second fictional pop culture text to depict the movement1 and it is all about confession. It is an iconic depiction, an intervention in the debate that is frequently referenced and imitated. It is mentioned in a 2011 documentary called This is What Love in Action Looks Like about real-life teenager Zach Stark being forced into an ex-gay conversion program; it is imitated in both a 2007 episode of the popular Comedy Central animated satire South Park, in which the character Butters is forced into an ex-gay conversion program, and a 2013 episode of Saturday Night Live featuring Ben Affleck as an ex-gay counsellor.

Academic Editor: Melanie D. In 2015, the UN Human Rights Commissioner called for all nations to ban conversion therapies. This research investigates a neglected area of scholarship on the ex-gay movement by deconstructing and analyzing the implications of ex-gay discourses of female homosexuality in a global context. The ex-gay movement originated in the United States and has proliferated to nearly every continent. We argue that it is the main purveyor of public, anti-lesbian rhetoric today, constructing lesbianism as sinful and sick to control women’s sexuality, enforce rigid gender roles and inequality, and oppress sexual minority women. Guided by Adrienne Rich’s theory of compulsory heterosexuality and Barbara Risman’s gender structure theory, we analyze how, in ex-gay discourse, lesbianism is demeaned and demonized in the individual, interactional, and institutional dimensions of the gender structure. Finally, we examine the impact of ex-gay discourse on sexual minority women in global context.

  • Cultural and Medical Myths About Homosexuality
TMSJ 19/2 (Fall 2008) 175-202 CULTURAL AND MEDICAL MYTHS ABOUT HOMOSEXUALITY Michael A. Grisanti Professor of Old Testament Three questions need to be answered regarding cultural and medical myths about homosexuality: (1) Is there a “gay gene”? In giving a positive answer, some sources cite two categories, nature and nurture. Behavioral genetics have sought and allegedly found a source for homosexuality, but many scientists have strong questions about behavioral genetics. Various studies have failed to prove conclusively that a “gay gene” exists. (2) Is it possible for a person to change sexual orientation from being homosexual to heterosexual? The current consensus in the mental health profession is that attempts to convert a homosexual to a heterosexual are too likely to be harmful. A possibility of change has been demonstrated, but worldwide consensus continues to view such a change as impossible because of biological and psychiatric factors. Studies by Spitzer and Jones/Yarhouse have identified examples of change without harm to individuals involved. (3) How have homosexual activists impacted modern culture throughout the world? Various pieces of legislation, both national and international, have put at risk anyone who dares to oppose homosexual- ity. Even some ecclesiastical leaders have softened their tone in speaking against this sexual deviation. * * * * * I must admit that earlier in 2008 I approached my Faculty Lecture as I approached writing this article, with a bit of fear and trepidation. I can identify with the prophet Amos when he affirmed, “I was neither a prophet nor a prophet’s son” (Amos 7:14). I am not a geneticist or the son of a geneticist.

ARTICLE HOW THE CONCEPT OF SEXUAL ORIENTATION THREATENS RELIGIOUS LIBERTY Robert H. Knight I. INTRODUCTION Sexual orientation laws are not about the preservation of civil rights or even the creation of civil protections that are necessary to ensure the liberty of all citizens. Instead, they are about hijacking civil rights in order to empower homosexual groups with the ability to threaten lawsuits against any institution that will not go along with the idea that homosexuality is normal, healthy, and should be promoted. It is important to understand that people who engage in homosexual behavior have the same basic rights as other citizens, no more, no less. But they should not be given additional rights based on their willingness to perform peculiarand often medically dangeroussex acts. Like other terms that swiftly achieve common usage, sexual orientation is rarely examined. Yet sexual orientation is more than a neutral term that can be used to describe anyones sexual inclinations.

  • Homosexuality: Innate and Immutable?
HOMOSEXUALITY: INNATE AND IMMUTABLE? A. Dean Byrd & Stony Olsen* I. INTRODUCTION This article focuses on the question of whether homosexuality is medically or psychologically harmful. Can a homosexual be "cured?" Is homosexuality an immutable, biological characteristic, or is it the product of one's environment? The answers to these questions foster some of the hottest raging debates in society and politics today. Answers to these questions have many implications for policy makers and touch the very foundations of society and morality in America. There is an inordinate amount of conflict and politicization surrounding the topic. Controversies range from what to teach our children (recall the debate over whether the Boy Scouts of America should be allowed to bar homosexual scoutmasters) to questions about marriage and the nature of the family in general. It is useful to define "homosexuality." Homosexual behavior refers to overt sexual activities between two partners of the same gender. Homosexual orientation refers to overall sexual responsiveness of someone to members of his or her same gender. Homosexual identity refers to the labeling of oneself as gay or lesbian. This article examines the status of science in answering the question of whether being homosexually oriented is a choice, or whether the T-shirt thanking mom for the "gay gene" is accurate. Attention is given next to the controversial slogan that gay activists loudly proclaim: "Once a homosexual, always a homosexual." In contrast, can homosexuality be "cured" as some professionals and ministries claim? Is it possible that homosexual attraction can diminish and heterosexual attraction emerge? Then this article discusses how homosexuality has in the very short span of * Professor A.
