BOOK REVIEWS 741 archal Narrative and Mosaic Yahwism [Minneapolis: Fortress, 1992]), P. suggests that a Mosaic narrator, though shaping the text to suggest a typological connection with Joshua's conquest, may have judged the massacre by Simeon and Levi, for example, as inappropri ate in the ancestral "dispensation," making it an "antitype," of later "holy war" under Joshua. A reading in the Christian "dispensation" would reset the ethical accents of the story once more. Although Christian readers might possibly interpret Simeon and Levi's violence typologically as spiritual "violence" deployed by the church against real vio lence, they must reject the actual violence perpetrated by Simeon and Levi as an anti- model. In chap. 6, P. addresses various feminist perspectives on Genesis 34, admits its "patriarchal" perspective (though relativized by the biblical metanarrative), and allows for midrashic reconstructions of largely unvoiced perspectives of female characters (Dinah, the Hivite women); but he resists firmly any imposition of extrabiblical canons as authori tative for the story's interpretation.

2018 ANNUAL RePORT I’M EMPOWERED ENLIGHTENING WAYS to LIVE WITH Low VISION Regardless of where you are on the vision spectrum, Braille Institute provides comprehensive services to address the various needs of individuals who have a visual impairment. “We are here to help any individual who is having difficulties or struggling to participate in daily activities because of low vision. We’re not just for individuals who are totally blind,” said Nilima Tanna, Director of Low Vision Services (right). A person’s first introduction to Braille Institute’s services can be through our free low vision consultation with a specialist. In a typical one hour consultation, the specialist assesses and learns what activities the client is struggling with, and helps them find different ways of achieving their objectives. “We came to Braille Institute for a magnifier, but we left with so much more!” Carrie, whose mother has Macular Degeneration, said. “My only regret is that we didn’t meet Nilima two years ago when my mom’s vision first changed so drastically.” Carrie’s mother, Barbara, learned how to change the settings on her computer, received tips for writing a check, was told including magnification devices to help them how to visually mark the settings on her washer and dryer, and reach their goals,” Nilima said. learned she could request large print medication labels from Carrie said she saw her mother more her pharmacist. encouraged than at any other time in the “We assess their ability to perform various activities, last few years after having her one-on-one educate them about things such as how lighting and contrast consultation.

  • The Crucial Development of Heavy Cavalry Under Herakleios and His Usage of Steppe Nomad Tactics Mark-Anthony Karantabias
The Crucial Development of Heavy Cavalry under Herakleios and His Usage of Steppe Nomad Tactics Mark-Anthony Karantabias The last war between the Eastern Romans and the Sassanids was likely the most important of Late Antiquity, exhausting both sides economically and militarily, decimating the population, and lay- ing waste the land. In Heraclius: Emperor of Byzantium, Walter Kaegi, concludes that the Romaioi1 under Herakleios (575-641) defeated the Sassanian forces with techniques from the section “Dealing with the Persians”2 in the Strategikon, a hand book for field commanders authored by the emperor Maurice (reigned 582-602). Although no direct challenge has been made to this claim, Trombley and Greatrex,3 while inclided to agree with Kaegi’s main thesis, find fault in Kaegi’s interpretation of the source material. The development of the katafraktos stands out as a determining factor in the course of the battles during Herakleios’ colossal counter-attack. Its reforms led to its superiority over its Persian counterpart, the clibonarios. Adoptions of steppe nomad equipment crystallized the Romaioi unit. Stratos4 and Bivar5 make this point, but do not expand their argument in order to explain the victory of the emperor over the Sassanian Empire. The turning point in its improvement seems to have taken 1 The Eastern Romans called themselves by this name. It is the Hellenized version of Romans, the Byzantine label attributed to the surviving East Roman Empire is artificial and is a creation of modern historians. Thus, it is more appropriate to label them by the original version or the Anglicized version of it.

The Arthurian Legend Now and Then A Comparative Thesis on Malory’s Le Morte D’Arthur and BBC’s Merlin Bachelor Thesis English Language and Culture, Utrecht University Student: Saskia van Beek Student Number: 3953440 Supervisor: Dr. Marcelle Cole Second Reader: Dr. Roselinde Supheert Date of Completion: February 2016 Total Word Count: 6000 Index page Introduction 1 Adaptation Theories 4 Adaptation of Male Characters 7 Adaptation of Female Characters 13 Conclusion 21 Bibliography 23 van Beek 1 Introduction In Britain’s literary history there is one figure who looms largest: Arthur. Many different stories have been written about the quests of the legendary king of Britain and his Knights of the Round Table, and as a result many modern adaptations have been made from varying perspectives. The Cambridge Companion to the Arthurian Legend traces the evolution of the story and begins by asking the question “whether or not there ever was an Arthur, and if so, who, what, where and when.” (Archibald and Putter, 1). The victory over the Anglo-Saxons at Mount Badon in the fifth century was attributed to Arthur by Geoffrey of Monmouth (Monmouth), but according to the sixth century monk Gildas, this victory belonged to Ambrosius Aurelianus, a fifth century Romano-British soldier, and the figure of Arthur was merely inspired by this warrior (Giles). Despite this, more events have been attributed to Arthur and he remains popular to write about to date, and because of that there is scope for analytic and comparative research on all these stories (Archibald and Putter). The legend of Arthur, king of the Britains, flourished with Geoffrey of Monmouth’s The History of the Kings of Britain (Monmouth).
