The New Culture Industry Tracing Democratization, Cultural Pluralism, and a New ‘Stillness’ in Modern Music
Savoy 1 The New Culture Industry Tracing democratization, cultural pluralism, and a new ‘stillness’ in modern music Augie Savoy Professor Jennifer Friedlander 9/28/20 Savoy 2 PREFACE In this country, it’s very hard for creative thought to escape capitalism. —Juan Atkins I have the impression that many of the elements that are supposed to provide access to music actually impoverish our relationship with it. —Michel Foucault As a listener, my earliest memory of music is hearing Michael Jackson’s Off the Wall on a portable CD player when I went to pre-school in Norway. Because my family had recently moved there, I had no experience speaking Norwegian and, until I figured it out, my parents thought I could listen to music to pass the time. For better or worse, it did far more than that. It started my love affair with music. On the surface, Off the Wall was straight to the point, ener- getic, and loud. As I replayed it, I realized that I could stick my head into the production and hear all the small details. The drums were rigid and robotic. The bass was relaxed and fluid. Michael Jackson’s voice was elastic, traveling across an entire emotional spectrum from tender to harsh. The production felt like a spectrum of different faces and characters. It was the storytelling and humanness of the record that made it compelling. It turned an uneventful day in pre-school, sur- rounded by kids I couldn’t understand, into a cinematic piece of art. Like Michael Jackson’s legacy, however, my relationship to music has become more complicated as I’ve gotten older. -

The OSU also secured approval to move forward on construction of a 70,000-square-foot facility with meeting and event space, multiple food venues, the CSUMB Bookstore, student and administrative offices, the Otter Cross Cultural Center, study rooms, lounges, outdoor programming spaces, and an outdoor terrace that will embrace the Monterey Bay environment. These developments were shepherded by an expanded staff. In 2018, OSU expanded from a staff of four to a staff of eight, full-time professional staff, including its first Director, Assistant Director of the Otter Cross Cultural Center, Assistant Director of Programs & Communications, Audio Visual & Technical Services Coordinator, and Coordinator for Affinity Groups. -

The tenth edition of the international meeting of the music sector offered a feminist, cross-sectional and diverse programme, in tune with the new normality that Primavera Sound has adopted as its slogan. A grain of sand with which to contribute to a change of paradigm in the centre which there shines an undeniable confirmation: that it is possible to organize an event as a response to the gender gap in the industry by putting a majority of women on stage, both as speakers and as artists. It also proves that you can, definitely, create a forum in which there is no room for high fives but for combat, criticism, and also, self-criticism without which we would not be able to move forward to make the music environment, a truly healthy one, as it emerged from the enlightening roundtable discussion about well-being and mental health. th st The anniversary of Primavera Pro, whose main activities took place from the 29 to the 31 May at the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona, was written in purple ink, the 1 one which identifies the Insumisas (“untamed”) programme, the new section organized in collaboration with the association Mujeres de la Industria de la Música to discuss the political dimension of feminism, both in the music sector and in international culture. -

Cuco Para Mi Interscope. “Where is this fool going?” blares a nasally, robotic voice on the Intro of Cuco’s Para Mi , a sun-dappled day trip of a debut album. Kicking off one of the year’s most highly anticipated projects with such throwaway self-awareness is indicative of the California cool that the singer/multi- instrumentalist born Omar Banos oozes with enviable ease. And while Para Mi may not offer a definitive answer to its formative query, few could deny that this record takes you to places altogether different. Cuco has been independently releasing music since he was 16 and it shows. Even the weakest moments on Para Mi reveal a close attention to detail, from the sharp pop hooks to the gelatinous soundscapes fusing funk and psychedelia. Singles Hydrocodone and Feelings are the gold standard for this intoxicating blend; the former showcasing gutting lyrical sensibilities, the latter a consummate understanding of mixing, where each layer of instrumentation is richly felt, the contours rigid even as they melt together.
