Other students could be blues and bring Bard seen lying prone under the hot sun for hours, no doubt in shock that this could be the same campus which only students together weeks ago was frigid and inhospitable. Many vendors also lined the Qiad on Sunday, selling everything from cloth ing and jewelry, to henna tattoos, to toast. In addition, not one but two ice cream "trucks" capitalized on the warm BY CHRlSTINE NIELSEN weather, both run by enterprising Bard students. In the evening, after performances by the Flying Spring Fling was a hit among Bard students, owing in no Fiddlers and others, the weekend's musical selections small part to the weather, which was universally touted as wound to a close with an old favorite, the Foundation. Well, guess what. Don Bluth is back and he wants to make a Dragon’s Lair movie. Just donate to his Kickstarter campaign to help get the movie off the ground. If that doesn’t appeal to you, how about Super Troopers? Remember that 2002 comedy? Well, guess what? There’s an IndieGoGo campaign to make Super Troopers 2. If that doesn’t appeal to you, then how do you feel about the hip-hop stylings of B.o.B? Well if you hop over to GoFundMe, you can help B.o.B raise the funds necessary build his own satellite so he can prove, once and for all, that the Earth is flat. He’s already 0.6% of the way towards reaching his goal! Digital crowdfunding websites date back at least as far as 2003, when ArtistShare was founded. And the term “crowdfunding” dates back to 2006. But in the past few years crowdfunding has become a staple in the arts and entertainment. These campaigns aren’t confined to the arts. But within the artistic sphere it’s seen as a new way to bypass the restrictions that come with working through the major music labels, Hollywood studios, and the like. By this point, however, crowdfunding is itself big business. And we should always be wary when big tech companies promise new technical solutions to the problems of capitalism. -

Abstract Can ‘loving blackness’ become a new discourse for anti-racism in the UK and the broader black diaspora? This thesis will critically assess the concept of ‘loving blackness as political resistance’ as outlined by the African American feminist bell hooks (1992). The thesis will show the ways in which blackness has been both negated and denigrated in western cultures and thus constructed in opposition to notions of love and humanness. Conversely, love and blackness are also rehabilitated in different ways by Black diasporic populations in Britain through the transnational space. The transnational space can provide opportunities for constructing, networks of care, love and anti racist strategies that affirm the value of blackness and Black life. However, the transnational space can also be fraught with risks, dangers and exclusions providing Black and migrant populations with uneven forms of citizenship and belonging to western neo-liberal states. -

(York University) SUPERVISOR: Dr. Christina Baade NUMBER OF PAGES: vii, 167 ii ABSTRACT With its almost exclusive focus on the economics of the music industry, the early-21 st century debate over digital music piracy has obscured other vital areas of study in the relationship between popular music and the Intemet. This thesis addresses some of these neglected areas, specifically issues of agency, representation, discipline, and authority; it examines each of these in relationship to the formation and maintenance different online music communities. I argue that contemporary online trends related to music promotion, consumption, and criticism are, in fact, part of a much larger socio-cultural re-envisioning of the relationships between artists and audiences, artists and the music industry, and among audience members themselves. The relationship between music and the Intemet is not only subversive on the level of economics. I examine these issues in three key areas. Independent women's music cOlmnunities challenge patriarchal authority in the music industry as they use online discussion forums and web sites to advance their own careers. The tension that exists between the traditional for-profit music industry and the developing ethic of sharing in the filesharing community creates the conditions whereby we can imagine aItemative ways that music can circulate in culture. -

TRAVEL Five Miles Up with … Amanda Palmer By Bekah Wright | Compass – 3 hours ago Back in February, Amanda Palmer, the lead singer, pianist, and lyricist/composer of Amanda Palmer and The Grand Theft Orchestra, as well as The Dresden Dolls, took to a stage in Long Beach, Calif., without striking a note. Instead, she gave a TED Talk on The Art of Asking. Palmer spoke about making human connections during concert tours by tweeting requests for primal needs, including shelter. The wisdom she gained via crash pads and couch surfing prompted FMU to unplug our earphones to get to know our seatmates en transit. To kick things off properly, we got an introduction to Palmer’s travel style. What’s something you never fail to pack in your suitcase? My memory foam pillow. It's my religion. Carry-on or check-in? Almost always both, but carry-on if I possibly can. Run, run, run away!!! Window or aisle? Window. Do you bring food with you on plane? I scour the airport for decent snacks and the only decent airport snack food seems to be in Australia. They have smoothies to die for. What’s your idea of the perfect vacation?
