For Immediate Release: October 10, 2016 Contact: Nancy Lee, [email protected], 310-443-7016 HAMMER MUSEUM HONORS LAURIE ANDERSON AND TODD HAYNES AT THE GALA IN THE GARDEN WITH SUPPORT FROM BOTTEGA VENETA Highlights included tributes from Karl Ove Knausgaard & Sarah Paulson; live performances by Laurie Anderson, Rufus Wainwright (Los Angeles, CA)—On Saturday, October 8, 2016, the Hammer Museum welcomed cultural and civic leaders, artists, collectors, patrons of the arts, and entertainment world notables to the 14th annual Gala in the Garden. The Gala raised over $2 million to support the Hammer’s dynamic and nationally acclaimed exhibitions and public programs, which are always free to the public. Returning for the fourth year, Bottega Veneta partnered with the Hammer Museum to present this year’s Gala in the Garden, celebrating both artists and creative expression in Los Angeles. Nearly 600 guests attended the Gala—held in the Museum’s outdoor courtyard—which honored artist Laurie Anderson and filmmaker Todd Haynes with tribute speeches by Norwegian author Karl Ove Knausgaard and Emmy-winning actress Sarah Paulson. Singer/songwriter Rufus Wainwright performed “Candles,” “The Art Teacher,” and “Going to a Town.” Event co-chairs included Jodie Foster and Alexandra Hedison, Robert Soros, and Bottega Veneta Creative Director Tomas Maier. The menu for the seated dinner was created by Suzanne Goin of Lucques. Maier and Hammer Museum Director Ann Philbin, wearing a Bottega Veneta suit, greeted guests who support the creative community at the Hammer including UCLA Chancellor Gene Block, Supervisor Mark Ridley Thomas, Paul McCarthy, Kim Gordon, January Jones, Will Ferrell, Mark Bradford, Patricia Arquette, Elizabeth Chambers, Emma Roberts, Selma Blair, Amanda Peet, Sterling Ruby, Alessandra Ambrosio, Laura Dern, Mamie Gummer, Minnie Driver, Isabel Lucas, Liz Goldwyn, Tom Ford, Joel McHale, Andie MacDowell, Frances Stark, and Njideka Akunyili Crosby.

  • 1 a Conversation with Rufus Wainwright by Frank
A Conversation with Rufus Wainwright by Frank Goodman (6/2007, Puremusic.com) Rufus Wainwright has gotten so big in recent years that he needs no introduction from us. His new CD Release The Stars debuted at #2 in the UK and #10 at iTunes. He is the brother of Martha and the son of Loudon and of Canadian Folk icon Kate McGarrigle. In Wikipedia, his genres are listed as Baroque Pop and Popera. His dad in a PM interview said that Rufus began listening to opera at a very young age. No, he doesn't sing like that, but on the other hand, no one's melodies are quite or even remotely like his. Also, his string and horn arrangements (whether handled by himself or his partners in poperatic crime) are quite unto themselves, and always one of the elements that set him immediately apart from the field, the entire field. In Michael Hill's beautiful bio at rufuswainwright.com, both the author's and especially the artist's words tell the story of Rufus's first self-produced CD and connected events in a most impressive fashion. It's reassuring that in this vapid rapid time there are still real artists in popular music. Puremusic: We haven't spoken in this way since 2003, so it's really great to have you on the phone again. Rufus Wainwright: Thank you. PM: Release the Stars, another triumph. You're in top form. RW: Thank you so much. Yeah, I'm definitely going for something-- [laughter] RW: God knows what it is, but it's something.

  • Psaudio Copper
Issue 41 SEPTEMBER 11TH, 2017 Welcome to Copper #41! The title isn't to announce a James Taylor retrospective---sorry to crush your hopes--- but is just what I see in today's weather reports. The Pacific Northwest, where I'm bound for a long-delayed vacation, is up in flames, along with many other parts of the tinder-dry US. Meanwhile, back in my former home of Florida...they've already had nearly two feet of rain, and Hurricane Irma is not even close to the state yet. Stay safe, everyone. I'm really pleased and excited to have Jason Victor Serinus back with us, with the first part of an intensive introduction to art song. Jason brings tremendous knowledge of the field, and provides plenty of recorded examples to listen to, and in the case of videos, watch. There are many stunning performances here, and I hope you enjoy this extraordinary resource. We'll have Part 2 in Copper #42. Dan Schwartz is again in the lead-off spot with the second in his series of articles on encounters–this one, with Phil Lesh and crew; Seth Godin tells us how control is overrated; Richard Murison hears a symphony; Duncan Taylor takes us to Take 1; Roy Hall tells about a close encounter of the art kind; Anne E. Johnson introduces indie artist Anohni; and I worry about audio shows (AGAIN, Leebs??), and conclude my look at Bang & Olufsen. Industry News tells of the sale of audiophile favorite, Conrad-Johnson; Gautam Raja is back with an amazing story that I think you'll really enjoy, all about Carnatic music, overlooked heritage, and the universal appeal of rock music; and Jim Smith takes another warped look at LPs.

Female artists, social media and alternative economy: the case of Amanda Palmer Beatriz Medeiros165 and Beatriz Polivanov166 Abstract In this paper we seek to investigate the strategies that the independent artist Amanda Palmer uses in order to gain visibility and financial capital to promote her music. Our theoretical background is mainly related to the process of self- presentation in social media, along with Bourdieu’s (2013) notion of symbolic capital. Based on the analysis of posts made by the artist on social network sites, such as Twitter and Instagram, apart from her blog and book / memoir (Palmer, 2014), we argue that her approaches for getting the audience engaged with her pledges can be gathered in three axes: a) public exposure of intimacy; b) negotiations of asking and c) advertising her crowdfunding projects.

The Tim Ferriss Show Transcripts Episode 67: Amanda Palmer Show notes and links at tim.blog/podcast Tim Ferriss: All right. So I'm gonna click "record," and then we're just gonna take a couple of seconds of silence, and then we'll jump right into it. Hello, boys and girls. This is Tim Ferriss, and welcome to another episode of the Tim Ferriss Show where I deconstruct world-class performers, whether they be billionaire hedge-fund managers, early-stage investors, like Peter Thiel, or celebrities, Arnold Schwarzenegger, musicians, chess prodigies, and so on. They have commonalities, and they do have tools and tricks and routines that you can use. This episode, I am interviewing Amanda Palmer, who is a musician, but also a social media virtuoso and innovator as a musician, from the standpoint of both music and business models. Some of you, I'm sure, have seen her hit TED presentation, "The Art of Asking," which has been viewed more than six million times. But her story goes much, much deeper, and we will plumb the depths. We will talk about, of course, perhaps the Dresden Dolls where she first rose to prominence as one-half of that acclaimed punk cabaret duo, then the journey from solo album to leaving her record label altogether and experimenting with things like Kickstarter. She made international news in 2012 when she raised nearly $1.2 million preselling her new album, "Theatre is Evil," which went on to debut in the Billboard Top 10. It's one hell of a story.
