Misleading titleBy Laura I.With most books targeting a particular species of animal, information is given on the animal's native habitat, its care in captivity, physical characteristics, sexual dimorphism, and reproduction. Not so in this book. I was treated to three paragraphs about the physical characteristics, one of which just repeating the best points of the other two, in large font. The remaining 35 pages are filled with a relatively decent guide on setting up an aquarium, albeit riddled with spelling mistakes. The last five pages are blank.As a guide to the delightful kuhli loach, this book is a disaster. -

Wingless Fruit Flies www.aquaticcommunity.com/fishfood/winglessfruitflies.php Wingless fruit flies are appreciated by a wide range of fish, especially those who would feed on small in- sects on the water’s surface in their natural environment. Fruit fly is for instance an ideal food for pencilfish and hatchetfish. Growing your wingless fruit flies at home is not very complicated and you will always have suitable live food ready for your fish devour. To being with, you naturally have to obtain wingless fruit flies. You can for instance purchase them from an aquarium shop or ask your local fish club if anyone is willing to sell or donate flies. You will also need some type of ventilated container to house your fruit fly culture. A one quart (or 1 li- tre) fruit jar or sealer is handy, but virtually any type of container will work, as long as it has a fitting ring. A glass container is recommended since glass can be boiled prior to use, thereby ensuring clean conditions. You will also need a piece of clean cloth. The next step is a create something that allows your wingless fruit flies to get out of the culture medium. You can for instance use Popsicle sticks or a peace of cardboard or even better use a peace of that plastic mesh sold in needlework shops. What ever you decide to use, it should go from the bottom of your container up to near the top. -

Up to now, 17 of the 21 valid genera have been included into genetic phylogenies. The present phylogenetic study analyses the only two known species of Bibarba using nuclear and mitochondrial DNA sequences. Both species together formed a monophyletic lineage that is sister to the Northern clade of Cobitidae, but well-separated from the four other major lineages within the Northern clade. The results support the validity of the genus and show it to represent a major lineage on its own. The morphological synapomorphy of the northern clade is in the sexual dimorphism, with males bearing an ossified structure (lamina circularis or scale of Canestrini) on the second branched pectoral-fin ray in males. Bibarba was reported to have such structure on the third instead of second fin ray, but our observations reveal the presence of two lamina circularis, one on the second and one on the third fin ray (character doubling). -

There are generally 2 types of cory, the dwarf cory and the normal cory. Brochis are not cories. The dwarf cory is great for nano tanks because it usually remains less than 3cm long ( about 1.3 inch). They do well in community tanks too and the only special care they require is not putting them together with aggressive fish like Cichlids. Dwarf Cichlids may do well with them occasionally but avoid them if you can. -

These countries have a high diversity of freshwater fishes, especially described and undescribed species of Cypriniformes; together these species and other flora and fauna represent an extraordinary opportunity for worldwide collaboration to investigate the biodiversity, conservation, management and evolution of Borneo’s wildlife. Much of the fauna and flora of Borneo is under significant threat, warranting an immediate and swift international collaboration to rapidly inventory, describe, and conserve the diversity. The Sunda drainage appears to have been an important evolutionary centre for many fish groups, including cypriniforms (Cyprinidae, Balitoridae and Gyrinocheilidae); however, Northwestern Borneo (Brunei, Sabah and Sarawak) is not connected to Sundaland, and this disjunction likely explains the non-homogeneity of Bornean ichthyofauna. A previous study confirmed that northern Borneo, eastern Borneo and Sarawak shared a similar ichthyofauna, findings that support the general hypothesis for freshwater connections at one time between western Borneo and central Sumatra, and south Borneo and Java island. -
