Resident of the Month Lyle Anderson The Frederick, Wisconsin Hospital announced the birth of Lyle on March 5th, 1938. He came to his Trade River farm home and was welcomed by older sister Darlene. Lyle loved the farm and attended the Trade River one-room school through the 8th grade. He attended a small country church near the Trade River, where he invited Jesus into his life and was baptized in the Trade River. His parents moved to Minneapolis, where Lyle treasured his high school years at Minnehaha Academy. He participated in sports and loved the music that was offered. He sang with the Minnehaha Singers and later joined the Minneapolis Choralairs after graduation. With the Minneapolis Choralairs, Lyle had the privilege of traveling to Europe to sing with the group. He attended Augsburg College and was a participant in the choir. In 1960 he joined the Army National Guard. Lyle met the love of his life, Alice, when they were both attendants in a wedding. They have now been married 61 years. Lyle was a Reservation Supervisor for Northwest/Delta Airlines for 32 years. After retirement, he was employed at the MSP Airport for 20 years transporting passengers. Their first home was in Moorhead, Minnesota while Lyle worked at Northwest in the reservation area in Fargo. God blessed their home with three children. Lyle was active in ball teams, bowling league, did a lot of singing in groups and began his Sunday Worship leadership. A transfer to the Minneapolis Northwest office, brought them to Prior Lake where they have lived the past 51 years. Lyle served on the Prior Lake Fire Department for 20 years and held the Assistant Chief role for 15 years. He was very involved in Christian Music Ministries and directed the church choir for 20 years. Lyle's family enjoyed many camping trips, airline privileges made it possible to travel to fun and interesting places. The couple has six adult grandchildren. At one point, Lyle and Alice were selected as Prior Lake's Senior Citizen King and Queen. Their home was always a hospitable house, for friends, family, neighbors and strangers. Lyle and Alice cared for a neighbor who was a resident at Friendship Manor and were so impressed with the care she received. They were so thankful that when Lyle needed a new earthly home there was a bed available. It is the time of the year, when we eat something so dear. It is a refreshing treat, that is sweet, juicy, and fun to eat. This flavorful fruit is delicious and certainly is nutritious. It is watermelon! National Watermelon Day is August 3, 2021 Dehydration and the Elderly Dehydration is a dangerous problem that can be life threatening to an elderly person in a short period of time. Importance of Water Next to oxygen, water is the nutrient most needed for life. A person can live without food for a month, but most people can survive only three or four days without water. We start life in a watery cradle of amniotic fluid. Water makes up 85% of the blood, 70% of the muscles, and about 75% of the brain, and is present in and around our cells. In the body, water acts as a solvent, coolant, lubricant, and transport agents. It is needed to regulate body temperature, carry nutrients, remove toxins and waste materials, and provide the medium in which all cellular, chemical reactions take place. Fluid balance is vital for body functions and adequate blood volume. A significant decrease in the total amount of body fluids leads to dehydration. Dehydration occurs when the amount of water a person takes in is less than the amount that is lost. Fluids are lost through the urine, skin, and lungs. Along with fluids, essential electrolytes such as sodium and potassium are also perilously depleted in a dehydrated individual. Effects on Elderly Individuals Elderly Individuals are at a heightened risk for dehydration because their bodies have lower water content than younger people. An elderly person weighing 150 pounds has about seven times less water than a young person of the same weight. As a result, these individuals can become dehydrated more quickly. Because of visual, cognitive, or motor impairments, elderly persons may have difficulty getting fluids for themselves. They also may have only a muted perception of thirst. Unfortunately, many symptoms of dehydration do not appear until significant fluid has been lost and that it can happen very rapidly, in less than an eight hour shift. Nursing facility residents are particularly at risk for dehydration. According to the article, “Preventing Dehydration in the Elderly”, published in the September 1996 edition of Provider magazine, as many as 75% of residents have average fluid intakes below 1500 cc per day. A minimum recommendation is between 1500 to 2000 cc of fluid a day. These residents may need more opportunities and reminders to drink. Signs and Symptoms of Dehydration It is important that staff members be able members be able to recognize the signs and symptoms of dehydration to promptly assure correction and prevention of complications. Confusion Confusion can be an early sign of dehydration. Caregivers need to look for subtle changes in mental status. It should be one of the first problems suspected when residents have sudden changes in mental status. Poor skin turgor (elasticity) Accompanies dehydration, but this can be a difficult sign to assess because most older residents have an age related reduction in skin turgor under normal circumstances. Generally, skin will feel warm and moist with dehydration. An assessment of vital signs will reveal a decrease in blood pressure and increase in pulse when dehydration is present. Family Council is back in action at Friendship Manor. Family Council has had a long history with Friendship Manor and has been extremely successful in the past! The Family Council will meet quarterly for about an hour. The focus of the group will be to help plan events and activities, help with fundraising events and of course be the voice for our Residents. Family Council has always been very popular and effective. We have a group that is already forming but if you would like to join, there’s still room for you! Contact Jamie in Social Services if you’re interested in getting more information. Trivia Merle Haggard’s hometown was Bakersfield, CA.
