The sales assistant, with arms full of clothing and a tape measure around her neck, beams at the woman, who is looking at her reflection with a confused stare. The woman is wearing what from the front appears to be a normal, knee-length floral dress. However, the mirror behind her reveals that the “dress” is actually a flimsy sheet of paper that is taped onto the woman and leaves her back-half exposed. The caption reads: “So these are the disposable paper dresses I’ve been reading about?” This newspaper cartoon pokes fun at one of the most defining fashion trends in American history: the paper dress of the late 1960s.1 In 1966, the American Scott Paper Company created a marketing campaign where customers sent in a coupon and shipping money to receive a dress made of a cellulose material called “Dura-Weave.” The coupon came with paper towels, and what began as a way to market Scott’s paper products became a unique trend of American fashion in the late 1960s.

1 Sheffield U3A 1960s Fashion Project: What We Wore Sheffield U3A 60s Project 2018 – Fashion Group narrative 2 This document has been compiled by members of the Sheffield University of the Third Age (SU3A) who formed a Fashion Group as part of a wider Remembering the 1960s project. The group met regularly during 2018, sharing memories, photographs and often actual items of clothing that they wore during the 1960s, when most of the group were teenagers or young adults. The 1960s was a very exciting time to be a young fashion-conscious person, with most having enough spare cash to enjoy the many new styles pouring out of the waves of creativity which characterised the decade in so many ways. New easy-care fabrics became available, and cloth was still cheap enough to enable most women to copy the latest designs by making garments at home. In fact, the ubiquity of home-dressmaking was a key factor which emerged from our project and represents one of the biggest changes in everyday clothing between the 1960s and 50 years later. In those days almost every family had someone skilful enough make their own garments, and doing so was generally less expensive than buying clothing. Many books and a wealth of information and online resources are now available for students of 1960s fashion history and it is not our intention here to repeat that well-documented narrative. Instead we wanted to tell our own stories and record our personal recollections of our favourite outfits and memories associated with them. We did this by sharing and talking about our photographs, by showing each other garments and accessories we have kept and treasured, by reminiscing, and by writing up those reminiscences.

  • Interview Lindatent-Dress Interview 3
Q and A CORRESPONDENCE Q by Linda Weintraub A by Robin Lasser and Adrienne Pao Center for Integrated Media California Institute of the Arts Winter, 2010 Dear Robin and Adrienne: in 1797, a boy about the age of twelve was found naked in the woods around Aveyron, France. He apparently had never before been in the company of humans. The boy was captured, not once but twice, because he managed to escape the ministrations of a local abbot and biology professor who took him in as a case study. Later, Jean Marc Itard, a medical student, assumed the task of civilizing this wild child. The story inspired a remarkable film called “Wild Child” (1976) by Francois Truffault, The terror that gripped the lad provides the film’s heart-stopping drama, as well as its pervasive irony. The boy’s fear was triggered by urbane comforts such as interior spaces, mandolin music, and language. A fear comparable to his often engulfs civilized people when they venture into the wilderness that provided his comfort. It seems equally incongruous that the wild boy’s pleasures originated in what civilized folks avoid. Romping naked in the snow provides a vivid example. Thus the boy’s joyful abandonment was pitted against the sobering restraints of civilization. The first sign of the boy’s entry into the society of people is, significantly, also the first sign of the boy’s discomfort. This transformation took the form of a shiver. The wild boy felt cold. He reached for a cloth and wrapped it around his body. He sought clothing and shelter! Clothing and shelter coalesce in your ambitious Dress/Tent projects.

  • Contemporary British Menswear: Hybridity, Flux, and Globalisation
Contemporary British Menswear: hybridity, flux, and globalisation Designer Kim Jones’ debut collection for Dior Men was unveiled in Paris in June of 2018 and, as the models proceeded along the runway to the strains of Underworld’s ‘Born Slippy,’ many of the major developments that have animated men’s fashion in recent years were brought together. Hybridised outfits encompassing elements of sportswear, casual clothing and tailoring appeared; decorative, floral motifs and delicate fabrics were allied to utilitarian flourishes to produce curiously refined boiler-suits, soft unstructured trench-coats, and bomber-jackets upon which neoclassical botanicals unfurled. The aesthetic codes of subculture and street style combined with the savoire faire and elegance of the famous maison de couture. Gesturing to the disintegration of barriers between formerly distinct genres of clothing, Jones played with transparency throughout the collection: trousers in lightweight shirting exposed the boxer-shorts worn beneath them; a billowing white lace shirt was layered over a chiffon vest – the ornate pattern seeming to float like vapour – veiling the model’s naked torso as lightly as dew. In this collection Jones, a British menswear designer, drew upon the stylistic references, colours, textures, and modes of fabrication of one of the most famous of French fashion houses while simultaneously alluding to a history of British subculture as underlined by the transgressive, elegiac laddishness of the Born Slippy anthem: “drive boy dog boy, dirty numb angel boy, she was a lipstick boy […] lager lager lager, shouting”.1 This exchange between French and British sartorial cultures echoes earlier moments of borrowing, particularly in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, as dandy, fop and macaroni aesthetics crossed and re-crossed la manche to the chagrin of jingoists of both nationalities.

NESUG 2010 Programming Beyond the Basics SAS® Style Templates: Always in Fashion Cynthia L. Zender, SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC ABSTRACT The syntax for style templates changed in SAS® 9.2 and became much easier to use. With the new CLASS statement, there is no need to debate the use of the STYLE statement versus the now defunct REPLACE statement. Yes, the REPLACE statement has gone away, and now we have the CLASS statement. In addition, you can import a CSS file into a SAS style template. All of these exciting new changes add up to stylish and fashionable output using ODS style templates. This paper provides an introduction into the use of style templates in SAS 9.2. Methods of determining the correct style elements will be shown along with several concrete examples of making style template changes. The use of the IMPORT statement will also be demonstrated. In addition to these topics, a job aid will be provided that outlines the most commonly used style elements and their attributes. INTRODUCTION The first fact that most SAS users learn about the Output Delivery System (ODS) is the use of the basic "sandwich" invocation statements. Second, most SAS users learn about the use of the STYLE= option. The STYLE= option specifies an ODS style template (or style definition) which, for destinations that support styles, changes the overall look and feel of the output. Each ODS destination is like a major fashion designer or fashion house (Yves St. Laurent, Chanel, Calvin Klein, Armani), and each style template or style definition is like a particular outfit in a fashion line— the prêt-a-porter or ready to wear—outfits in the ODS fashion line styles are provided by SAS at installation time.

  • Women's Experiences with Maternity Clothing 1935
“WE WORE NOTHIN’ TIGHT, NEVER ANYTHING TIGHT”: WOMEN’S EXPERIENCES WITH MATERNITY CLOTHING 1935-1974 by CHARITY SUZANNE CALVIN (Under the Direction of Patricia Hunt-Hurst) ABSTRACT This research explored women’s experiences with maternity clothing between 1935 and 1974. The study found that women’s maternity clothing choices were dependent primarily on what styles were in fashion during the pregnancy, the availability of maternity clothing, and personal preference. Women’s perception of their maternity clothing was dependent on the level of control they had over their maternity clothing, the number of options available, how they perceived their body, how well their clothing fit social requirements, the function and fit of clothing, whether or not the clothing matched their personal style, and the level of support from their social circle. Women acquired their maternity clothing through a combination of sewing, borrowing, purchase, or “making do” with non-maternity pieces. Factors considered in planning and wearing maternity clothing were the activities in which women participated during pregnancy, which were impacted by the social view of pregnancy.
