“The Answer to Laundry in Outer Space”: the Rise and Fall of The
Archived thesis/research paper/faculty publication from the University of North Carolina at Asheville’s NC DOCKS Institutional Repository: http://libres.uncg.edu/ir/unca/ University of North Carolina Asheville “The Answer to Laundry in Outer Space”: The Rise and Fall of the Paper Dress in 1960s American Fashion A Senior Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of the Department of History In Candidacy for the Degree of Bachelor of Arts in History By Virginia Knight Asheville, North Carolina November 2014 1 A woman stands in front of a mirror in a dressing room, a sales assistant by her side. The sales assistant, with arms full of clothing and a tape measure around her neck, beams at the woman, who is looking at her reflection with a confused stare. The woman is wearing what from the front appears to be a normal, knee-length floral dress. However, the mirror behind her reveals that the “dress” is actually a flimsy sheet of paper that is taped onto the woman and leaves her back-half exposed. The caption reads: “So these are the disposable paper dresses I’ve been reading about?” This newspaper cartoon pokes fun at one of the most defining fashion trends in American history: the paper dress of the late 1960s.1 In 1966, the American Scott Paper Company created a marketing campaign where customers sent in a coupon and shipping money to receive a dress made of a cellulose material called “Dura-Weave.” The coupon came with paper towels, and what began as a way to market Scott’s paper products became a unique trend of American fashion in the late 1960s. -

A Pattern Adaptation for Body Changes During Pregnancy: a Single Case Study
A Pattern Adaptation for Body Changes during Pregnancy: A Single Case Study A thesis submitted to the faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Minnesota by MyungHee Sohn in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Sciences Elizabeth Bye, Adviser November 2009 Abstract Pregnant women experience dramatic body changes during their pregnancy. With the wide variety of body shapes and sizes, physical changes occur differently for every pregnant woman; thus, these variations lead to problems of comfort, fit, and sizing of ready-to-wear maternity apparel. Therefore, this study examined the changes in body measurements and shapes during pregnancy and analyzed the relationship between these changes and pattern measurements and shapes. A single case study method was used to observe one participant’s body measurement and body shape changes during pregnancy, and the relationship between these body changes and related pattern changes. Findings were analyzed by the changes in body measurements and body shapes and the relationship between the body changes and pattern changes. The entire pattern adjustment process represents the analysis of the relationship of body changes to pattern changes. The findings of this study suggest that consideration of body shape during apparel pattern development offers valuable information related to fit that goes beyond standard linear measurements. In addition, the results indicated that body measurements and patterns did not increase proportionally to each other. The pattern changes were not necessary due to body measurement or shape changes. The patterns were adjusted not only to accommodate body changes but also to maintain the garment style. -

DRAFTING COLLARS ADJUSTMENT FOR PETER PAN COLLAR Collars can also be drafted from scratch and added to your blouse and dress patterns. My favorite vintage-style collar is the Peter Pan collar, which I incorporated into the blouse variation on page 160. It can be added to any blouse, jacket, or dress with a round neckline, and it will make the most basic garment ooze charm! Depending on how you style a Peter Pan collar, it can look ladylike or playful, 1930s glam or 1960s mod. Once you understand the basics of making a Peter Pan collar, you can apply this knowledge to any shape or size collar you like. For the purpose A. Overlap shoulder seams. of this little design project, let’s use a 1940s button-back blouse as our base. The basic premise of drafting a collar like this is that you use the neckline of your garment as your guide—the basic shape of your collar is right there! So start by laying out your blouse front and back pattern pieces on a table. Use a colored pencil to draw in the neckline and shoulder seam lines on your pattern pieces. -
