However, a lack of multi-scale studies on intra-urban green space limits our knowledge of human settlement environments in this region. In this study, a synergistic methodology, including the main process of linear spectral decomposition, vegetation-soil-impervious surface area model, and artificial digital technology, was established to generate a multi-scale of green space (i.e., 15-m resolution intra-urban green components and 0.5-m resolution park region) and investigate multi-scale green space characteristics as well as its ecological service in 12 central cities of the Inner Mongolian Plateau. -

Background In 1983 the enduring and well-established scholar of Mongolian, Nicholas Poppe, published his Reminiscences in English, describing his life and research in detail.2 Later, in 1996, Russian researcher V. M. Alpatov wrote a biography of Nicholas Poppe in Russian. However, the pattern of lake changes and how it responds to climate change and revegetation have rarely been reported. We investigated the pattern of lake-area changes in the Dalinor National Nature Reserve (DNR) using Landsat imagery during 1976–2015, and examined its relationship with changes in climate and vegetation factors. The total lake-area in the DNR has decreased by 11.6% from 1976 to 2015 with a rate of −0.55 km2 year−1. The largest Dalinor Lake reduced the most (by 32.7 km2) with a rate of −0.79 km2 year−1. The air temperature has increased significantly since 1976, with a rate of 0.03 ◦C year−1 (p < 0.05), while the precipitation slightly decreased during 1976–2015, with a rate of −0.86 mm year−1. -

Volker Rybatzki University of Helsinki From animal to name, remarks on the semantics of Middle Mongolian personal names In 2006 I published my dissertation, “Die Personennamen und Titel der mit- telmongolischen Dokumente: Eine lexikalische Untersuchung”, in the series of the Institute for Asian and African Studies at Helsinki (Publications of the In- stitute for Asian and African Studies 8).1 At that time, I planned to publish in the near future a revised version of the work (together with additional chapters on semantics, word formation, etc.). As it happened, however, a great quantity of new material of Middle Mongolian (including numerous personal names and titles) was published at that time: the materials discovered in Dunhuang at the end of the 1990s and at the beginning of the new millennium (Peng & Wang 2000, 2004a–b), as well as the materials found in Qaraqoto and preserved in Huhhot (Yoshida & Cimeddorji 2008), this last publication includes also some unique Middle Mongolian fragments e.g. hPags-pa written in cursive script. At this point, a revised publication would have meant rewriting the whole disserta- tion; for that reason, the whole plan was abandoned. Other research interests also led to this decision. Already partly written, however, were some sections of the revised version: a treatment of semantics and word formation, an overview of Middle Mongolian literature (in its broadest sense), and an additional chapter dealing with the names of Buddhas, Bodhisattvas and other Buddhist entities. As I believe that these chapters might still be of some interest to the scientific world, I hereby present the chapter on the semantics of Middle Mongolian per- sonal names as a token of gratitude to my teacher Juha Janhunen. -

Mahbubur Rahman2, Biao Tang1, Li-Juan Fan1 & Aruna Kilaru 2 Accepted: 2 November 2018 Iris sanguinea is a perennial fowering plant that is typically cultivated through seeds or bulbs. However, Published: xx xx xxxx due to limitations in conventional propagation, an alternate regeneration system using seeds was developed. The protocol included optimization of sterilization, stratifcation and scarifcation methods as iris seeds exhibit physiological dormancy. In addition to chlorine-based disinfection, alkaline or heat treatment was used to break seed dormancy and reduce contamination. When seeds were soaked in water at 80 °C overnight, and sterilized with 75% EtOH for 30 s and 4% NaOCl solution for 20 minutes, contamination was reduced to 10% and a 73.3% germination was achieved. The germinated seedlings with 2-3 leaves and radicle were used as explants to induce adventitious buds. The optimal MS medium with 0.5 mg L−1 6-benzylaminopurine, 0.2 mg L−1 NAA, and 1.0 mg L−1 kinetin resulted in 93.3% shoot induction and a proliferation coefcient of 5.30. Medium with 0.5 mg L−1 NAA achieved 96.4% rooting of the adventitious shoots. The survival rate was more than 90% after 30 days growth in the cultivated matrix. In conclusion, a successful regeneration system for propagation of I. sanguinea was developed using seeds, which could be utilized for large-scale propagation of irises of ecological and horticultural importance. -

MAY 2016 W A N G E T A L . 1169 Changes in Climate Extremes and Catastrophic Events in the Mongolian Plateau from 1951 to 2012 1 LEI WANG,* ZHI-JUN YAO,LI-GUANG JIANG, RUI WANG,SHAN-SHAN WU, AND ZHAO-FEI LIU Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China (Manuscript received 9 October 2014, in final form 20 October 2015) ABSTRACT The spatiotemporal changes in 21 indices of extreme temperature and precipitation for the Mongolian Pla- teau from 1951 to 2012 were investigated on the basis of daily temperature and precipitation data from 70 meteorological stations. Changes in catastrophic events, such as droughts, floods, and snowstorms, were also investigated for the same period. The correlations between catastrophic events and the extreme indices were examined. The results show that the Mongolian Plateau experienced an asymmetric warming trend. Both the cold extremes and warm extremes showed greater warming at night than in the daytime. The spatial changes in significant trends showed a good homogeneity and consistency in Inner Mongolia. Changes in the precipitation extremes were not as obvious as those in the temperature extremes. The spatial distributions in changes of precipitation extremes were complex. A decreasing trend was shown for total precipitation from west to east as based on the spatial distribution of decadal trends. Drought was the most serious extreme disaster, and pro- longed drought for longer than 3 yr occurred about every 7–11 yr. An increasing trend in the disaster area was apparent for flood events from 1951 to 2012.
