Martin Luther King, Jr. Howard County Holiday Commission sponsors 2009 MLK Student Essay Contest “Embrace the dream, Live the dream. Together we can do it!” Have we realized every facet of Dr. King's “dream” or do we still have more work to do? We want your view. Consider participating in the 2009 Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Contest. Please select the essay question below, include it with the other information listed, and submit your essay no later January 7, 2009.

Prizes High School: 1st Place $750; 2nd Place $350; 3rd Place $150 Middle School: 1st Place $500; 2nd Place $250; 3rd Place $100

Essay Topics (Choose One )

(a) When you look around Howard County, do you see any evidence or the influences of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.? Explain; OR

(b) Choose an excerpt from Dr. King’s “I have a Dream” speech. Using the chosen excerpt, discuss how the “dream” has been realized in Howard County; OR

(c) Considering our nation's past, do you think Dr. Martin Luther King’s “dream” shapes Howard County's future? Discuss.

Essays should be typed and double-spaced and include the student’s name, address, telephone number and/or email address, school, grade level and essay topic. High School students must submit essays between 750 words and 1000 words in length. Middle School students must submit essays between 500 words and 750 words in length. Students with disabilities are strongly encouraged to participate and may submit other media (posters, pictures, etc.) addressing the topics above.
