JOHN IRELAND SCHOLARSHIP

The College of St. Thomas and The Saint Paul Seminary were founded by the visionary Archbishop John Ireland, the third bishop and first archbishop of St. Paul. The John Ireland Scholarship honors his commitment to Catholic education and service to God’s people by offering graduating seniors or recent graduates of the University of St. Thomas the opportunity to pursue full-time graduate studies at The Saint Paul Seminary School of Divinity.

Application Process: 1. Applicants must be eligible for admission to one of the following degree programs: Master of Arts in Theology, Master of Arts in Religious Education, or Master of Arts in Pastoral Ministry. Application into one of the three eligible degree programs must be submitted by the scholarship application deadline. 2. Please apply for this scholarship by writing a letter to the John Ireland Scholarship Committee indicating your desire to be considered for the award. The letter should include statements about your enthusiasm for the mission of The Saint Paul Seminary School of Divinity and your commitment to service. In addition, please address how this scholarship will help you attain your long-term career or ministry goals as well as your commitment to full-time study. 3. Submission of the John Ireland Scholarship Application form. 4. In addition, one letter of recommendation is required addressing your demonstration of the scholarship criteria: enthusiasm for the mission of the school and commitment to service. Your recommender should send the letter directly to the scholarship committee. 5. A FAFSA for the upcoming academic year must be on file by the application deadline. 6. Letter of application and attendant materials, must be received by February 28. Finalists may be invited to interview with the committee in order to discuss their application in greater detail. 8. Up to three scholarships will be awarded shortly following application deadline.

Criteria for Assessing Applications: 1. Record of academic success as demonstrated by coursework and cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 in previous degree program(s). 2. Acceptance into one of the three eligible degree programs for full-time study. 3. Recommender’s assessment of the applicant’s enthusiasm for the mission of The Saint Paul Seminary School of Divinity and commitment to service. 4. Applicant’s response to questions about long-term career and/or ministry goals and commitment to service and mission.

John Ireland Scholarship: The University of St. Thomas and The Saint Paul Seminary were founded by the visionary Archbishop John Ireland, the third bishop and first archbishop of St. Paul. The John Ireland Scholarship honors his commitment to Catholic education and service to God's people by offering recent graduates of the University of St. Thomas a full-tuition scholarship for the opportunity to pursue graduate studies in any of the degree programs at the School of Divinity.

Open to all degree-seeking students who are recent graduates of the University of St. Thomas, this merit- based scholarship provides financial support based on academic achievement. The award is for 100% of tuition costs, renewing for a maximum of two years (three years for MARE or MAPM) of full-time study. The scholarship recipient must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.5 to retain the award. Up to three scholarships are awarded annually.

Application Requirements: 1. Attach a letter to the John Ireland Scholarship Committee indicating a desire to be considered for the award. The letter should include statements about your enthusiasm for the mission of The Saint Paul Seminary School of Divinity and your commitment to service. In addition, please address how this scholarship will help you attain your long-term career or ministry goals as well as your commitment to full-time study. 2. Submission of all materials for application to The Saint Paul Seminary School of Divinity at the University of St. Thomas
