Course Outline for Design Technology 66B DESIGN TECHNOLOGY
Catalog Description:
66B - Design Technology 3 Units
Continuation of principles from Design Technology 66A. Introduction to numerical Control. Includes flow and interaction between manufacturing and drafting, drafting documentation, revision systems, complex drawings, and drawings of entire systems. Explanation of career opportunities, potential salaries and promotions, skills required and attitudes necessary to succeed in industry. Emphasis on designing a electrical/mechanical project using reverse engineering. Prerequisite: Design Technology 66A. 1.5 hours lecture, 4.5 hours laboratory.
Prerequisite Skills:
Before entering the course the student should be able to:
1. visualize, sketch, and draw detail parts of assemblies, using symbols and concepts; 2. apply knowledge of manufacturing practices, industrial materials and specifications to the design of castings, forging, sheetmetal, weldments, and machine parts; 3. utilize technical mathematics to solve geometric problems; 4. develop mechanical detail drawings with the Computer-Aided Drafting system.
Expected Outcomes for Students:
Upon completion of the course the student should be able to:
1. program APT (Automated Program Tooling) assembly to numerical control; 2. apply flow of design parts, manufacturing, implementation and documentation; 3. sketch and detail entire assembly with proper notations and form proper revisions; 4. effectively operate the CAD system; 5. describe the job; 6. discuss the opportunities for job and job advancement; 7. design an electrical/mechanical project using reverse engineering.

1. Working drawings and assembly drawings from stated design project 2. Tolerance studies 3. Material specification and selection 4. Drawing revision systems 5. Drawing notes and specification 6. Introduction to numerical control problems - APT-CAD systems 7. Vendor catalogs 8. Microfilming 9. ANSI standards 10. Modem drafting room environment 11. Advancement in drafting interviewing skills 12. Salaries today: future trends 13. Job descriptions and assignments in: a. Electrical/Electronic b. Mechanical 14. Branching careers from drafting.
