Statement of Program Goals and Objectives The Associate of Science Degree in Chemistry will provide students interested in the physical, health, and biological sciences with a strong academic background in chemistry and will satisfy the coursework required to transfer to several four-year institutions. This degree will certify the students’ ability to approach and solve problems in chemistry and other areas where chemistry knowledge is required. Chemistry related fields include the pharmaceutical sciences, food sciences, biotechnology, nanotechnology, environmental sciences and engineering among many others. 2. Catalog Description The Associate of Science Degree in Chemistry provides students interested in the physical, health, and biological sciences with a strong academic background in chemistry and coursework required to transfer to several four-year institutions. This degree certifies the students’ ability to analyze and solve problems in the area of chemistry and areas where knowledge of chemistry is required. Chemistry related fields include the pharmaceutical sciences, food sciences, biotechnology, nanotechnology, environmental sciences and engineering among many others. Our students pursue careers in chemistry, pharmacy, medicine, dentistry, physician assistant, and in other health or physical sciences careers. 3. Background and Rationale The main goal of the chemistry department is to prepare students with the appropriate course work to transfer to four-year universities. The major in chemistry will be a “passport to science” which will certify that degree holders have the ability to analyze and solve problems in chemistry and pursue careers where knowledge of chemistry is required. The course work proposed for the major will give students a strong 9/01 background in science and provide students with analytical skills, problem solving abilities and a wider view of science. The AS in chemistry will provide students with an extra tool to succeed in their careers. “Career and workforce advancement and university transfer” are part of our college mission. The AS degree in chemistry is in alignment with that mission 4. Program Requirements

60 units of course credit: at least 20 semester units of chemistry and at least 40 semester units of course work as specified in the UC/CSU Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum as indicated below. In addition, courses from graduation plan A of the college catalog may be necessary for graduation.

B) GENERAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

Seven to twelve units should be selected from among the following courses which are part of the courses UC/CSU – IGETC list of the college catalog including any necessary prerequisites.

Chem 51* Fundamentals of Chemistry I (5 units) Chem 65* Elementary Chemistry (4 units) Chem 70 Introductory Organic and Biochemistry (4 units) Physics 1 Mechanics of solids (4 units) Physics 2 Mechanics of fluids heat and sound (4 units) English 101 College Reading and Composition II (3 units) English 103 Composition and Critical Thinking (3 units) * Select only one of these Total Units = 7 to 12

Students should visit the Transfer Center or meet with a counselor to select courses appropriate to the institution they plan to attend.

TOTAL UNITS REQUIRED FOR THE DEGREE= 60

Students applying for the associate degree are eligible to be considered for the Distinguished Graduate Award. Please check college catalog for more information 5. Enrollment and Completer Projections 9/01 NEED The chemistry courses proposed for the degree are already offered in our school. The Office of Research and Planning reports 201 students taking the courses required for the major during the Fall of 2007; 48 of those were in the two higher level classes. These 48 completed all units required for the degree. We estimate that at least 50 % of the total students will complete the necessary courses for the degree in chemistry the first year. As the students find out the benefits of their degree and coursework, we expect the number to double by the third year. As the 4-year universities find out about our students and assess their performance upon transfer, the department will look for specific agreements to enhance the program and increase enrolment. 6. Place of Program in Curriculum/Similar Programs The Associate of Science Degree in Chemistry will be the first science transfer program offered at Los Angeles Trade Technical College. An Associate of Science Degree in Biology and eventually one in Physics will also be offered. 7. Similar Programs at Other Colleges in Service Area Three of our sister colleges offer an AS degree in chemistry and our program follows these models but modified to satisfy the needs of our student population:

1. Los Angeles City College

First Semester Chemistry 101 (5 units) Mathematics 261 (5 units) English 101 (3 units) General Education (3 units) Second Semester Chemistry 102 (5 units) Mathematics 262 (5 units) Physics 101 (5 units) Third Semester Chemistry 211 (5 units) Mathematics 263 (5 units) Physics 102 (5 units) Mathematics 270 or General Education (3 units) Fourth Semester Chemistry 212 (5 units) Physics 103 (5 units) One course from Mathematics 270 or Mathematics 275 not taken in the third semester, or General Education (3 units) Chemistry 221 or General Education (3 to 5 units) Total Units = 65 to 67 To complete general education requirements in this area of study, Plan A for the AA/AS Degree is required. PLAN A: Please consult with a counselor about specific courses needed or see the college catalog "Graduation Requirements" section. Plan A is designed for transfer to a four-year college or university. However, requirements vary depending upon the individual institution. Please consult with a counselor for the specific requirements of the university you plan to attend”

This model was not mimicked for our school because ninety five percent of our student population pursues careers in the health sciences. Those schools require biology 6 and 7 and these courses 9/01 are not included in this degree. It also includes physics courses that our not offered at our school.

Transfer Documentation Attached 11. Program Evaluation Plan The chemistry department is reviewing all its courses. This review will set up point of reference and yearly reviews will provide documented information on the evolution of the program. Analysis of degrees granted every semester will, not only allow us to keep track of the program, but of the transfer students at Trade Tech 12. Library and/or Learning Resources Plan The library holds reference material for all of the courses required in FEASIBILITY the AS degree in chemistry. There are also several chemistry books in circulation. 13. Facilities and Equipment Plan The department counts with laboratory equipment that is comparable to the equipment to which students are exposed in other community colleges. The department is working on acquiring and/ or upgrading it in parallel with the equipment and instrumentation used by four-year universities 14. Financial Support Plan The Department has acquired equipment and resources through a) block grants 9/01 b) equipment given by the biology department c) Individual donations. The department will continue applying for block grants when available and will start looking for external founding to keep up with the changing needs of chemistry 15. Faculty Qualifications and Availability The chemistry department counts with two full time professors qualified to teach the chemistry courses and it is in the process of hiring a third one to strengthen our program. 16.
